Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 12
In this Sarga, not finding Seetā, Hanumān thinks, for a moment, that Seetā could be dead, killed by the Rākshasas as she resisted them in order to protect her chastity and honor. He feels dejected at the thought of going back and facing the Vānaras, only to confess that he could not find Seetā.
However, he shakes off that thought immediately and casts away the gloom that had descended on him. He resolves to search every inch of every area under the rule of Rāvaṇa. He sees many beautiful and lovely women as well as many ugly women, but not Seetā. He feels very sad and falls into deep thinking.

jagāma sītāṃ prati darṡanōtsukō
na caiva tāṃ paṡyati cārudarṡanām ॥
In that mansion, the son of Vāyu
passed through arbors,
art-galleries and bedrooms,
searching earnestly for Seetā,
but nowhere could he find
her of the enchanting looks.

dhruvaṃ hi sītā mriyatē yathā na mē
vicinvatō darṡanamēti maithilī ।
sā rākṣasānāṃ pravarēṇa jānakī
svaṡīlasaṃrakṣṇatatparā satī ।
anēna nūnaṃ prati duṣṭakarmaṇā
hatā bhavēdāryapathē parē sthitā ॥
I could not find Maithili
even after searching (everywhere).
For sure, she must be dead.
Jānaki, the faithful wife, resolved
to keep her virtue unsullied at all cost,
firm in her adherence to the noble code of honor,
must have been done to death by this
monstrously wicked Chief of Rākshasas.

The daughter of Lord Janaka
should have died of sheer fright
from the sight of the women of the Rākshasa king,
who look like zombies with
deformed and ugly bodies, huge faces
and abnormally wide and crooked eyes.

ஸுதீக்ஷ்ணதண்டோ பலவாம்ஸ்ச வாநர: ॥

vihṛtya kālaṃ saha vānaraiṡciram ।
na mē'sti sugrīvasamīpagā gatiḥ
sutīkṣṇadaṇḍō balavāṃṡca vānaraḥ ॥
Having wasted time in idle diversions
along with the other Vānaras,
instead of finding Seetā and proving my prowess,
I dare not go anywhere near
that strong Vānara Sugreeva,
who (is known for) inflicting draconian punishment.

I have checked the inner apartments thoroughly
and seen all the women of Rāvaṇa;
but Seetā, the good natured woman,
is nowhere to be seen; all my efforts are wasted.

What can I say of what the assembled
Vānaras will ask, when I return?
“Tell us, O Veera! What have you
accomplished, having gone there?”

what can I tell them?
They will certainly go on a fast unto death
with the set time limit having expired.

what will Aṅgada and the assembled Vānaras say?

sarvārthēṣu pravartakaḥ ।
karōti saphalaṃ jantōḥ
karma yattatkarōti saḥ ॥
Keeping the gloomy spirits at bay
is essential for prosperity
and critical for happiness.
It is needed to carry out
any affair, at any time.
It will bring success to any
endeavor that a man takes on.

yatnaṃ cēṣṭē'hamuttamam ।
adṛṣṭāṃṡca vicēṣyāmi

Hence, I shall cast aside
the gloom and put forth my best effort.
I shall search all the places
that are governed by Rāvaṇa,
which I have not seen so far.

vimānāni ca sarvaṡaḥ ॥
I have searched the drinking saloons,
the arbors, the art galleries, the recreation rooms,
the walkways in pleasure gardens and all the towers.
