5.14.1 ஈ Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 14
In this Sarga, Hanumān sees the Aṡōka Vana. He finds it beautiful with its varied landscape of flat lands, shallow areas and hilly areas, and with its natural and artificial lakes and stepped wells and trees lining their banks, and raised platforms around those trees.
He surmises that Seetā, who loved the life in the Vana, would surely come there to take a stroll, to enjoy the pleasant waters and to perform evening oblations. Then he finds an enchanting Ṡiṃṡupa tree with dense foliage, that was in bloom, bright as gold. He climbs on to the Ṡiṃṡupa tree, hides under the foliage, looking around, hoping for the arrival of Seetā.

and arriving at a plan about it in his mind,
got down from the ramparts of that house.

Filled with enthusiasm in every inch of his body,
the great Vānara, from the ramparts, saw
many trees like Sāla, beautiful Aṡōka,
Campakas with loads of flowers,
Uddālaka, Nāga, Cūta and Kapimukha,
their tops covered by flowers,
with the onset of spring.

dadarṡa hanumān kapiḥ ।
vṛtāṃ nānāvidhairvṛkṣaiḥ
puṣpōpagaphalōpagaiḥ ।
kōkilairbhṛṅgarājaiṡca
mattairnityaniṣēvitām ।
prahṛṣṭamanujē kālē
mṛgapakṣisamākulē ।
mattabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭām
nānādvijagaṇāyutām ॥
Hanumān, the Vānara, entered the Vana
that was resounding with the cooing of birds
and filled with trees everywhere
that glowed like silver and gold,
and saw the amazing forest
that was bright like the rising sun,
full of flocks of birds and herds of beasts.
With its multitudes of trees of many a kind
that were loaded with flowers and fruits,
it was ever haunted by Kōkilas and drunken bees.
It was filled with many beasts and birds
and packed with amorous flocks of peacocks
and flocks of many other kinds of birds,
in that season that enchanted all men.

As those flocks of birds flew away,
the trees, struck by their wings,
showered a rain of flowers of many colors.

With those beautiful flowers covering him,
Hanumān, the son of Vāyu,
looked like a mountain covered with flowers,
in the middle of that Aṡōka Vana.

vṛkṣaṣaṇḍagataṃ kapiḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni
vasanta iti mēnirē ॥
Looking at that (flower-covered) Vānara
darting here, there and everywhere in that grove,
all creatures felt that he was spring-incarnate.

The ground under those trees,
with many kinds of flowers scattered all over it,
shone like a woman bedecked with jewels.

sasṛjuḥ kapinā tadā ॥
The trees, violently shaken by
the impact of the impetuous Vānara,
rained down lovely flowers.

ṡīrṇapuṣpaphalā drumāḥ ।
nikṣiptavastrābharaṇā
dhūrtā iva parājitāḥ ॥
With their leaves blown away and
their flowers and fruits falling off,
the trees looked like gamblers
who lost all their wagers and surrendered
even the clothes and ornaments on them.

Those splendid trees in flower,
rocked by the terrific speed of Hanumān,
shed flower and leaf as well as fruit.

With the flocks of birds deserting them
and nothing but the bare boughs remaining,
all those trees looked as if
they were hit by a gale.

The Aṡōka Vana, with its rare trees snapped,
lashed by the tail, and crushed by
the hands and feet (of Hanumān),
looked like a young woman with her
hair all disordered, unguents rubbed off,
lovely teeth and lips sucked of their sweetness,
and body bearing the marks of nails and teeth.

He came upon step wells of various shapes,
filled with excellent water with flights of steps
studded with rich and rare gems here and there.
They had pearl and coral for sand (at the bottom)
and platforms paved with crystal.
Trees of a lovely golden luster
on their banks added to their beauty.
They shone with beds of lotus and lily in bloom.
The warbles of Cakravākas and
the cries of the water-crow,
swan and Sārasa-crane made them lively.
They were constantly replenished
by the Amṛta like pure waters
by streams that were fringed by tall trees.
They were overhung with hundreds of creepers,
covered with flowers of the wishing tree,
and dense with the thickets that shut them in,
punctuated by Karaveera trees.

5.14.13 ஈ திஸஸ்ஸர்வா: ப்ரதாவந்தம்
வ்ருக்ஷஷண்டகதம் கபி: ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸர்வாணி பூதாநி
வஸந்த இதி மேநிரே ॥
diṡassarvāḥ pradhāvantam
vṛkṣaṣaṇḍagataṃ kapiḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni
vasanta iti mēnirē ॥
Looking at that (flower-covered) Vānara
darting here, there and everywhere in that grove,
all creatures felt that he was spring-incarnate.

vṛkṣēbhyaḥ patitaiḥ puṣpaiḥ
avakīrṇā pṛthagvidhaiḥ ।
rarāja vasudhā tatra
pramadēva vibhūṣitā ॥
The ground under those trees,
with many kinds of flowers scattered all over it,
shone like a woman bedecked with jewels.

தரஸாபிப்ரகம்பிதா: ।
குஸுமாநி விசித்ராணி

tarasābhiprakampitāḥ ।
kusumāni vicitrāṇi
sasṛjuḥ kapinā tadā ॥
The trees, violently shaken by
the impact of the impetuous Vānara,
rained down lovely flowers.

ஸீர்ணபுஷ்பபலா த்ருமா: ।
நிக்ஷிப்தவஸ்த்ராபரணா

nirdhūtapatraṡikharāḥ
ṡīrṇapuṣpaphalā drumāḥ ।
nikṣiptavastrābharaṇā
dhūrtā iva parājitāḥ ॥
With their leaves blown away and
their flowers and fruits falling off,
the trees looked like gamblers
who lost all their wagers and surrendered
even the clothes and ornaments on them.

புஷ்பபர்ணபலாந்யாஸு

hanūmatā vēgavatā
kampitāstē nagōttamāḥ ।
puṣpaparṇaphalānyāṡu
mumucuḥ puṣpaṡālinaḥ ॥
Those splendid trees in flower,
rocked by the terrific speed of Hanumān,
shed flower and leaf as well as fruit.

மாருதேவ நிர்துதா: ॥
vihaṅgasaṅghairhīnāstē
skandhamātrāṡrayā drumāḥ ।
babhūvuragamāḥ sarvē
mārutēva nirdhutāḥ ॥
With the flocks of birds deserting them
and nothing but the bare boughs remaining,
all those trees looked as if
they were hit by a gale.

சரணாப்யாம் ச மர்திதா ।
பபூவாஸோகவநிகா
ப்ரபக்நவரபாதபா ॥
nirdhūtakēṡī yuvatiḥ
yathā mṛditavarṇakā ।
niṣpītaṡubhadantōṣṭhī
nakhairdantaiṡca vikṣatā ।
tathā lāṅgūlahastaiṡca
caraṇābhyāṃ ca marditā ।
babhūvāṡōkavanikā
prabhagnavarapādapā ॥
The Aṡōka Vana, with its rare trees snapped,
lashed by the tail, and crushed by
the hands and feet (of Hanumān),
looked like a young woman with her
hair all disordered, unguents rubbed off,
lovely teeth and lips sucked of their sweetness,
and body bearing the marks of nails and teeth.

யதா ப்ராவ்ருஷி விந்த்யஸ்ய

mahālatānāṃ dāmāni
vyaghamattarasā kapiḥ ।
yathā prāvṛṣi vindhyasya
mēghajālāni mārutaḥ ॥
The Vānara smashed clear the tangle of creepers
like wind clearing the banks of monsoon clouds
hovering on the Vindhya mountain.

And as he went about, he saw
lovely platforms, some paved with
pearls, others with silver and gold.

vāpīṡca vividhākārāḥ
pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā ।
mahārhairmaṇisōpānaiḥ
upapannāstatastataḥ ।
muktāpravālasikatāḥ
sphāṭikāntarakuṭṭimāḥ ।
kāńcanaistarubhiṡcitraiḥ
tīrajairupaṡōbhitā: ।
phullapadmōtpalavanāḥ
cakravākōpakūjitāḥ ।
natyūharutasaṃghuṣṭā
haṃsasārasanāditāḥ ।
dīrghābhirdrumayuktābhiḥ
saridbhiṡca samantataḥ ।
amṛtōpamatōyābhiḥ
ṡivābhirupasaṃskṛtāḥ ।
latāṡatairavatatāḥ
santānakusumāvṛtāḥ ।
nānāgulmāvṛtaghanāḥ
karavīrakṛtāntarāḥ ॥

He came upon step wells of various shapes,
filled with excellent water with flights of steps
studded with rich and rare gems here and there.
They had pearl and coral for sand (at the bottom)
and platforms paved with crystal.
Trees of a lovely golden luster
on their banks added to their beauty.
They shone with beds of lotus and lily in bloom.
The warbles of Cakravākas and
the cries of the water-crow,
swan and Sārasa-crane made them lively.
They were constantly replenished
by the Amṛta like pure waters
by streams that were fringed by tall trees.
They were overhung with hundreds of creepers,
covered with flowers of the wishing tree,
and dense with the thickets that shut them in,
punctuated by Karaveera trees.
