Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 17
In this Sarga, Hanumān sees Rākshasis who are guarding Seetā, each one ugly and frightful in their own way, some with one eye, some with ugly feet, some with elephantine ears and so on. He sees Seetā doleful but keeping her spirits up, confident of her husband’s ability. Finding her, he is overwhelmed with joy.

Then the clear moon,
shining like a bed of lilies,
rose up in the clear sky,
resembling a (white) swan
floating in dark water.

The moon of clear shine

as if to give him company and
counsel him with his brightness.

Hanumān, the son of Vāyu,
while taking a good look at Vaidēhi
also saw, not too far from there,
Rākshasis of terrible appearance.

One had only one eye and another only one ear.
One had huge ears that seemed to cover her,
while another had no ears at all,
while yet another had pointed ears
that resembled conch shells.
Another had a nose that stretched upwards
as if it was touching her head.

One had a huge body and huge head and
another had a long neck (like that of a crane).
One had disheveled hair,
while another had no hair at all,
while yet another had hair
that covered her like a thatch.

One had long ears and a huge forehead
while another had pendulous belly and breasts.
One had drooping lips while
another had lips for her chin.
One had a very long face,
while another had protruding knees.

One was too short, another was too tall,
while yet another was a hunchback
and one more was crookedly small.
One had buck teeth while another had a twisted mouth.
One had yellow eyes while another had a crooked face.

Some were crooked, some were black
and some had yellow eyes.
Some had a bad temper while
others were given to quarreling.
Some wielded huge iron spears
and some Kūṭas and Mudgaras.

Some had faces resembling those of boars,
deer, tigers, water buffalos, sheep and jackals.

those of elephants, camels and horses.
Some had their heads shrunk into their torsos.

Some had no nose, others had too big a one,
while others had noses turned sideways

Some had a nose that resembled an elephant’s trunk
while others had noses extending to their foreheads.

Some had huge feet, some had feet that
looked like those of elephants and cows,
while yet others had theirs covered with hair.
Some had abnormally large heads and necks
while others had abnormally large breasts and bellies.

Some Rākshasis looked terrifying, with faces
resembling those of horses, camels and donkeys.
Wielding spears and Mudgaras in their hands,
they were irascible and given to quarreling.

sadā māṃsasurāpriyāḥ ।
māṃsaṡōṇitadigdhāṅgīḥ
māṃsaṡōṇitabhōjanāḥ ॥
With buck teeth and hair rising like smoke,
those Rākshasis with crooked faces
indulged in nonstop swilling
addicted to liquor and meat.
They lived on flesh and blood,
their bodies smeared with them all over.

skandhavantamupāsīnāḥ
parivārya vanaspatim ॥
It was these kind of women sitting
around the massive tree of huge trunk,
the sight of whom made
one’s hair stand on its end,
that that great Vānara saw.

rājaputrīmaninditām ।
lakṣayāmāsa lakṣmīvān
hanumān janakātmajām ॥
The blessed Hanumān looked once again
at that lady, a blemish-less princess,
daughter of Janaka, who was under the tree.

malasaṅkulamūrdhajām ।
kṣīṇapuṇyāṃ cyutāṃ bhūmau
tārāṃ nipatitāmiva ॥
Devoid of all luster, scorched by grief,
her hair covered with dirt,
she looked like a star fallen on the ground
with its Puṇya exhausted.

bhartṛdarṡanadurgatām ।
bhūṣaṇairuttamairhīnām
bhartṛvātsalyabhūṣaṇām ॥
Endowed though with rich character, she was
still poor for not having sight of her husband.
Though lacking every ornament, she was
still adorned with the love of her husband.

bandhubhiṡca vinā kṛtām ।
viyūthāṃ siṃhasaṃruddhām
baddhāṃ gajavadhūmiva ॥
With none of her people around her
and entrapped by the lord of Rākshasas,
she was like a cow-elephant
chained and separated from the herd
with a lion pouncing on her.

She was like the digit of the moon
covered by post-monsoon clouds
at the end of the rainy season.
Haggard and unkempt, she was
like a Veena that is not tuned.

Seetā, who used to be under the
protective arms of her husband,
had now fallen into the hands of Rākshasis,
submerged in an ocean of grief in the
middle of that (enchanting) Aṡōka Vana.

Hanumān saw her thus surrounded by them
like the star Rōhiṇee by planets,
and looking like a creeper with no flowers.

sītāmasitalōcanām ॥
Hanumān, the Vānara, saw the
lovely dame Seetā of dark fawn eyes,
clad in her soiled and much worn garment,
her face looking doleful,
but her spirts not at all dented,
confident of the abilities of her husband and
having her own strength of character for a shield.

mṛgaṡābanibhēkṣaṇām ।
mṛgakanyāmiva trastām
vīkṣamāṇāṃ samantataḥ ।
dahantīmiva niḥṡvāsaiḥ
vṛkṣān pallavadhāriṇaḥ ।
saṃghātamiva ṡōkānām
duḥkhasyōrmimivōtthitām ।
tāṃ kṣamāṃ suvibhaktāṅgī
vinābharaṇaṡōbhinīm ।
praharṣamatulaṃ lēbhē
mārutiḥ prēkṣya maithilīm ॥
Hanumān, having found Seetā, the princess of Mithila
of fawn eyes and perfectly symmetrical limbs,
looking around in every direction like a scared fawn,
seeming to burn the trees with young shoots
with her hot sighs, looking as if
all the grief gathered at one place
and like a rising billow of sorrow,
but shining bright even without ornaments,
and looking like the mother earth herself,
felt extremely happy.

mumucē hanumāṃstatra

Hanumān shed tears of joy seeing
that lady of intoxicating eyes
and bowed to Rāma (in his mind).

லக்ஷ்மணாய ச வீர்யவாந் ।

namaskṛtvā ca rāmāya
lakṣmaṇāya ca vīryavān ।
sītādarṡanasaṃhṛṣṭō
hanumān saṃvṛtō'bhavat ॥
Overwhelmed with the joy of seeing Seetā,
the valorous Hanuman bowed to
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa (in his mind)
and hid under the foliage.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஸப்ததஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē saptadaṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the seventeenth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
