தாரசௌர்யம் த்வயா க்ருதம் ॥
ṡūrēṇa dhanadabhrātrā
balaiḥ samuditēna ca ।
apōhya rāmaṃ kasmāddhi
dāracauryaṃ tvayā kṛtam ॥
Otherwise, why would you,
a man of valor, brother of Kubēra,
with large forces (under your command),
resort to getting Rāma out of
the way and stealing his wife?

Hearing those words of Seetā,
the daughter of Janaka,
Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rakshasas,
stared at her, rolling his cruel eyes.

Then, Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rakshasas,
looking like a huge black cloud,
with mighty shoulders, burly neck, lion’s gait,
evident opulence, flaming eyes and tip of the tongue,
CLARFICATION
The Ṡlōkas 24 to 30 form a single sentence.
Translation demands some words to be rearranged to
conform to sentence structure of English language.
For that reason, the word Rāvaṇa taken from Ṡlōka 30,
and the phrase, ‘lord of Rakshasas’ taken from Ṡlōka 27
are used here.

Saying this to Maithili, the king
Rāvaṇa, who made his enemies wail,
instructed all the Rākshasis there who looked horrid,
one with a single eye, one with a single ear,
one with ears large enough to cover her body,
one with ears that looked like those of a cow and
another with ears that looked like those of an elephant,
one with sagging ears and another with no ears at all,
one with feet that looked like those of an elephant
and another with feet that looked like those of a horse,
yet another with feet that looked like those of a cow,
one with hair on her feet and one with only one leg,
one with huge feet and one with no feet at all,
one with humongous head and humongous neck,
one with humongous breasts and humongous belly,
one with humongous face and humongous eyes,
one with a hanging tongue and another with no tongue,
one with a face that looked like that of a lion,
another with a face like that of a cow,
yet another with a face like that of a pig,
and another with no nose at all.

Seetā, the daughter of Janaka
yield to me with no more delay.

Tame Vaidēhi, be friendly (with her)
at times and tough at others.
Employ all the (four) techniques,
Sāma, Dāna, Bhēda as well as Daṇḍa.

jānakīṃ paryatarjayat ॥
Instructing thus repeatedly,
the lord of Rākshasas threatened Jānaki,
consumed by passion and anger.

rākṣasī dhānyamālinī ।
pariṣvajya daṡagrīvam
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Then a Rākshasi, Dhānyamālini,
came up to the Ten-necked One without losing time
and said these words, hugging him:

mānuṣyā rākṣasēṡvara ॥
O great king! Sport with me, why bother
about this pale and miserable Seetā, a mere human!

ந திவ்யாந் போகஸத்தமாந் ।
விததாத்யமரஸ்ரேஷ்ட:

na divyān bhōgasattamān ।
vidadhātyamaraṡrēṣṭhaḥ
tava bāhubalārjitān ॥
O great king! It is clear that
(Lord Brahma), the supreme among the Dēvas,
did not destine her for the enjoyment of
the splendid luxuries that you have won
with the strength of your very own arms.

icchantīṃ kāmayānasya
prītirbhavati ṡōbhanā ॥
To be in love with a woman who is not loving,
hurts even the body.
It is beautiful and enjoyable to love
only the woman who is interested.

ஸமுத்க்ஷிப்தஸ்ததோ பலீ ।

ēvamuktastu rākṣasyā
samutkṣiptastatō balī ।
prahasanmēghasaṅkāṡō
rākṣasaḥ sa nyavartata ॥
With his ego thus boosted
by those words of the Rākshasi,
the mighty strong Rākshasa,
who was like a huge cloud, smiled and left.

kampayanniva mēdinīm ।
jvaladbhāskaravarṇābham
pravivēṡa nivēṡanam ॥
His powerful strides seeming to cause tremors on the earth,
the Ten-necked One then left and entered his residence
that shone bright like the dazzling sun.

நாககந்யாஸ்ச ஸர்வத: ।
பரிவார்ய தஸக்ரீவம்

nāgakanyāṡca sarvataḥ ।
parivārya daṡagrīvam
viviṡustaṃ gṛhōttamam ॥
The Dēva, Gandharva and Nāga women
who were surrounding the Ten-necked One,
also entered that splendid residence.

ப்ரபேபமாநாம் பரிபர்த்ஸ்ய ராவண: ।
விஹாய ஸீதாம் மதநேந மோஹித:
ஸ்வமேவ வேஸ்ம ப்ரவிவேஸ பாஸ்வரம் ॥
sa maithilīṃ dharmaparāmavasthitāṃ
prapēpamānāṃ paribhartsya rāvaṇaḥ ।
vihāya sītāṃ madanēna mōhitaḥ
svamēva vēṡma pravivēṡa bhāsvaram ॥
Having thus threatened the trembling Maithili
who remained bound to Dharma,
Rāvaṇa, who was overpowered by passion,
left Seetā and entered his dazzling residence.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்வாவிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē dvāviṃṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the twenty second Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
