Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 24
In this Sarga, the Rākshasis continue to press upon Seetā to become a wife of Rāvaṇa, extolling his prowess and riches, and the power and pleasures she can enjoy along with him, forgetting Rāma.
Seetā says that they better understand how sinful their advice is. She reaffirms to them her fidelity to Rāma, saying that she is as inseparable from her husband as Ṡaci is from Indra and Arundhati is from Vasishṭha.
Annoyed by her defiance, the Rākshasis threaten her saying that no one can rescue her from the clutches of Rāvaṇa, that they will kill her and cut her into pieces and divide among themselves, if she does not do as they say.
Seetā, finding it difficult to hold on to her nerve, cries bitterly.

ராக்ஷஸ்யோ விக்ருதாநநா: ।
பருஷம் பருஷா நார்ய
ஊசுஸ்தாம் வாக்யமப்ரியம் ॥
tataḥ sītāmupāgamya
rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ ।
paruṣaṃ paruṣā nārya
ūcustāṃ vākyamapriyam ॥
Then the cruel Rākshasis,
women of ugly faces,
went on badgering Seetā
with these unpleasant and harsh words:

mahārhaṡayanōpētē
na vāsamanumanyasē ॥
Why do you not agree to live
in the private apartments that
ravish the hearts of all creatures and
are furnished with luxurious beds?

பார்யாத்வம் பஹுமந்யஸே ।
ப்ரத்யாஹர மநோ ராமாத்

mānuṣī mānuṣasyaiva
bhāryātvaṃ bahumanyasē ।
pratyāhara manō rāmāt
na tvaṃ jātu bhaviṣyasi ॥
A human yourself, you think
much of being the wife of only a human,
which you can never hope to be in future.
Pull your mind away from Rāma!

ராவணம் ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வரம் ।
பர்தாரமுபஸங்கம்ய

trailōkyavasubhōktāram
rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasēṡvaram ।
bhartāramupasaṅgamya
viharasva yathāsukham ॥
Accepting Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas,
who enjoys the wealth of all the three worlds,
as your husband, enjoy as you please!

ராமமிச்சஸி ஸோபநே ।
ராஜ்யாத்ப்ர்ரஷ்டமஸித்தார்தம்

mānuṣī mānuṣaṃ taṃ tu
rāmamicchasi ṡōbhanē ।
rājyādbhrraṣṭamasiddhārtham
viklabaṃ tvamaninditē ॥
O lovely one! A human yourself,
you hanker after that human Rāma!
But, O blemish-less one, he has lost his kingdom
and is frustrated, unable to achieve anything!

ஸீதா பத்மநிபேக்ஷணா ।

rākṣasīnāṃ vacaḥ ṡrutvā
sītā padmanibhēkṣaṇā ।
nētrābhyāmaṡrupūrṇābhyām
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Hearing those words of the Rākshasis,
Seetā, said these words,
her lotus-petal-like eyes filled with tears:

உதாஹரத ஸங்கதா: ।
நைதந்மநஸி வாக்யம் மே
கில்பிஷம் ப்ரதிபாதி வ: ॥
yadidaṃ lōkavidviṣṭam
udāharatha saṅgatāḥ ।
naitanmanasi vākyaṃ mē
kilbiṣaṃ pratibhāti vaḥ ॥
Whatever words all of you together, say
towards me are reproachable by the entire world.
Do you not see in your hearts
the sinfulness of what you say?

பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹதி ।
காமம் காதத மாம் ஸர்வா

bhāryā bhavitumarhati ।
kāmaṃ khādata māṃ sarvā
na kariṣyāmi vō vacaḥ ॥
No human can be the wife of a Rākshasa!
Devour me if you will,
but I will not do what you say.

யோ மே பர்தா ஸ மே குரு: ।
தம் நித்யமநுரக்தாऽஸ்மி

dīnō vā rājyahīnō vā
yō mē bhartā sa mē guruḥ ।
taṃ nityamanuraktā'smi
yathā sūryaṃ suvarcalā ॥
Regardless of whether he is
miserable or has lost his kingdom,
he, my husband, is my lord.
I am always in love with him and only him,
as Suvarcala is with the sun.

லோபாமுத்ரா யதாऽகஸ்த்யம்
ஸுகந்யா ச்யவநம் யதா ।
ஸாவித்ரீ ஸத்யவந்தம் ச
கபிலம் ஸ்ரீமதீ யதா ।
ஸௌதாஸம் மதயந்தீவ
கேஸிநீ ஸகரம் யதா ।
நைஷதம் தமயந்தீவ
பைமீ பதிமநுவ்ரதா ।
ததாऽஹமிக்ஷ்வாகுவரம்
ராமம் பதிமநுவ்ரதா ॥
yathā ṡacī mahābhāgā
ṡak raṃ samupatiṣṭhati ।
arundhatī vasiṣṭhaṃ ca
rōhiṇī ṡaṡinaṃ yathā ।
lōpāmudrā yathā'gastyam
sukanyā cyavanaṃ yathā ।
sāvitrī satyavantaṃ ca
kapilaṃ ṡrīmatī yathā ।
saudāsaṃ madayantīva
kēṡinī sagaraṃ yathā ।
naiṣadhaṃ damayantīva
bhaimī patimanuvratā ।
tathā'hamikṣvākuvaram
rāmaṃ patimanuvratā ॥
Just as the blessed Ṡaci stayed bound to Ṡakra,
Arundhati to Vasishṭha, Rōhiṇee to the moon,
Lōpāmudrā to Agastya, Sukanyā to Cyavana,
Sāvitri to Satyavanta, Ṡreematee to Kapila,
Madayantee to Saudāsa, Kēṡinee to Sagara,
and just as Damayanti, the daughter of
Bheema, religiously followed Naishadha,
I follow my husband Rāma, the foremost of Ikshwākus.

ராக்ஷஸ்ய: க்ரோதமூர்சிதா: ।
பர்த்ஸயந்தி ஸ்ம பருஷை:
வாக்யை ராவணசோதிதா: ॥
sītāyā vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ ।
bhartsayanti sma paruṣaiḥ
vākyai rāvaṇacōditāḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Seetā,
the Rākshasis were outraged,
and threatened her using harsh words,
as instructed by Rāvaṇa.

5.24.15 ஆ அவலீநஸ்து தத்வாக்யம்
ஹநூமாந் ஸிம்ஸுபாத்ருமே ।
ஸீதாம் ஸந்தர்ஜயந்தீநாம்
ராக்ஷஸீநாம் ஸ ஸுஸ்ருவே ॥
avalīnastu tadvākyam
hanūmān ṡiṃṡupādrumē ।
sītāṃ santarjayantīnām
rākṣasīnāṃ sa ṡuṡruvē ॥
Hanumān who kept himself concealed
on the Ṡiṃṡupa tree listened to the
words of the Rākshasis threatening Seetā.

5.24.16 ஆ தாமபிக்ரம்ய ஸங்க்ருத்தா
வேபமாநாம் ஸமந்தத: ।
ப்ருஸம் ஸம்லிலிஹுர்தீப்தாந்
ப்ரலம்பாந் தஸநச்சதாந் ॥
tāmabhikramya saṅkṛddhā
vēpamānāṃ samantataḥ ।
bhṛṡaṃ saṃlilihurdīptān
pralambān daṡanacchadān ॥
Surrounding her, who was trembling all over,
the outraged Rākshasis licked their
blazing pendulous nether lips repeatedly.
‘Licking the lips’ is an indication of
one’s eagerness to have something for a meal.

ப்ரக்ருஹ்யாஸு பரஸ்வதாந் ।
நேயமர்ஹதி பர்தாரம்

ūcuṡca paramakruddhāḥ
pragṛhyāṡu paraṡvadhān ।
nēyamarhati bhartāram
rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam ॥
Also, in their rage, they grabbed axes and said:
‘She does not deserve Rāvaṇa,
the lord of Rākshasas, as her husband’!

5.24.18 ஆ ஸா பர்த்ஸ்யமாநா பீமாபீ
ராக்ஷஸீபிர்வராநநா ।
ஸபாஷ்பமப ஸர்பந்தீ

sā bhartsyamānā bhīmābhī
rākṣasībhirvarānanā ।
sabāṣpamapa sarpantī
ṡiṃṡupāṃ tāmupāgamat ॥
Thus threatened by those frightful Rākshasis,
her lovely face filled with tears,
she moved away near the Ṡiṃṡupa tree.

5.24.19 ஆ ததஸ்தாம் ஸிம்ஸுபாம் ஸீதா
ராக்ஷஸீபி: ஸமாவ்ருதா ।
அபிகம்ய விஸாலாக்ஷீ
தஸ்தௌ ஸோகபரிப்லுதா ॥
tatastāṃ ṡiṃṡupāṃ sītā
rākṣasībhiḥ samāvṛtā ।
abhigamya viṡālākṣī
tasthau ṡōkapariplutā ॥
With the Rākshasis still surrounding her,
as she moved towards the Ṡiṃṡupa tree,
Seetā of wide eyes stood there,
overwhelmed with grief.

5.24.20 ஆ தாம் க்ருஸாம் தீநவதநாம்
மலிநாம்பரதாரிணீம் ।
பர்த்ஸயாஞ்சக்ரிரே ஸீதாம்
ராக்ஷஸ்யஸ்தாம் ஸமந்தத: ॥
tāṃ kṛṡāṃ dīnavadanām
malināmbaradhāriṇīm ।
bhartsayāńcakrirē sītām
rākṣasyastāṃ samantataḥ ॥
Then those Rākshasis, from every direction,
harassed Seetā, who was helpless,
emaciated and clad in a dirty garment.

5.24.21 ஆ ததஸ்தாம் விநதா நாம
ராக்ஷஸீ பீமதர்ஸநா ।
அப்ரவீத்குபிதாகாரா
கராலா நிர்ணதோதரீ ॥
tatastāṃ vinatā nāma
rākṣasī bhīmadarṡanā ।
abravītkupitākārā
karālā nirṇatōdarī ॥
Then a Rākshasi, Vinata by name,
who looked frightful with her
revolting body and sunken belly,
looking like an embodiment of anger, said:

5.24.22 ஆ ஸீதே பர்யாப்தமேதாவத்
பர்து: ஸ்நேஹோ நிதர்ஸித: ।
ஸர்வாத்ராதிக்ருதம் பத்ரே
வ்யஸநாயோபகல்பதே ॥
sītē paryāptamētāvat
bhartuḥ snēhō nidarṡitaḥ ।
sarvātrātikṛtaṃ bhadrē
vyasanāyōpakalpatē ॥
‘Enough of the love you have shown
towards your husband, Seetā!
Anything, done in excess, will
only lead to problems, my dear! What an example of how bad people try to gain an upper hand over good people, painting adherence to good principles of life as inflexibility!

5.24.23 ஆ பரிதுஷ்டாऽஸ்மி பத்ரம் தே
மாநுஷஸ்தே க்ருதோ விதி: ।
மமாபி து வச: பத்யம்

parituṣṭā'smi bhadraṃ tē
mānuṣastē kṛtō vidhiḥ ।
mamāpi tu vacaḥ pathyam
bruvantyāḥ kuru maithili ॥
My dear, I am glad that you have done
what a human is supposed to do, thus far!
But now, O Maithili, do what I say, for your own good!

பர்தாரம் ஸர்வரக்ஷஸாம் ।
விக்ராந்தம் ரூபவந்தம் ச
ஸுரேஸமிவ வாஸவம் ।
தக்ஷிணம் த்யாகஸீலம் ச
ஸர்வஸ்ய ப்ரியதர்ஸநம் ।
மாநுஷம் க்ருபணம் ராமம்
த்யக்த்வா ராவணமாஸ்ரய ॥
rāvaṇaṃ bhaja bhartāram
bhartāraṃ sarvarakṣasām ।
vikrāntaṃ rūpavantaṃ ca
surēṡamiva vāsavam ।
dakṣiṇaṃ tyāgaṡīlaṃ ca
sarvasya priyadarṡanam ।
mānuṣaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ rāmaṃ
tyaktvā rāvaṇamāṡraya ॥
Take Rāvaṇa, the lord of
all Rākshasas, for your husband.
He is valiant and handsome like
Vāsava, the lord of Dēvas.
He is capable, generous to a fault
and is pleasant to one and all.
Leave alone the miserable Rāma, a mere human
and give yourself to Rāvaṇa!
