முஹூர்தமபி ஜீவதி ॥
anviṣyārākṣasāṃ laṅkām
kuryādrāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
na hi tābhyāṃ ripurdṛṣṭō
muhūrtamapi jīvati ॥
Rāma, along with Lakshmaṇa,
will comb Laṅkā and free it of Rākshasas.
No foe who falls in their line of sight
can survive even for a Muhūrta.

Before it is too long, this Laṅkā
will turn into cremation grounds
covered in smoke from funeral pyres
and crowded with flocks of vultures.

The evil path you trek presages

Surely, with Rāvaṇa,
the vile and sinful Rakshasa, killed,
the invincible Laṅkā will
dry up like a widowed woman.

Like a woman who has lost her husband,
the city of Laṅkā, with its lord lost,
and only Rākshasis remaining,
will be devoid of all festivities.

with the Rākshasa women wailing in every house.

nirdagdhā rāmasāyakaiḥ ॥
Burned down to ashes by the arrows of Rāma,
Laṅkā will lose all its glitter
with darkness enveloping it and
all the bulls among Rākshasas killed.

comes to know that I am in the house of Rāvaṇa ...!

sa ca mē vihitō mṛtyuḥ
asmin duṣṭē na vartatē ॥
The time limit set by this cruel and base Rāvaṇa
is fast approaching; why is it that the death
that is impending upon me, is not on him!

ராக்ஷஸா: பிஸிதாஸநா: ॥
akāryaṃ yē na jānanti
nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ ।
adharmāttu mahōtpātō
bhaviṣyati hi sāṃpratam ।
naitē dharmaṃ vijānanti
rākṣasāḥ piṡitāṡanāḥ ॥
These Rākshasas of sinful deeds do not know
what should be and should not be done.
A great calamity is imminent now
because they are hurting Dharma.
These Rākshasas, who feed on raw flesh,
do not have any sense of Dharma.

அபஸ்யந்தீ ஸுது:கிதா ॥
dhruvaṃ māṃ prātarāṡārthē
rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati ।
sā'haṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi
taṃ vinā priyadarṡanam ।
rāmaṃ raktāntanayanam
apaṡyantī suduḥkhitā ॥
Certainly the Rākshasa is
going to have me for breakfast.
But what can I do (about it),
without Rāma, of pleasing looks (by my side)!
I am overwhelmed by grief, not seeing him,
the corners of whose eyes are blood-red!

If there is anyone here
who can kindly give me some poison,
I, bereft of my husband, would rather go
and visit the lord of Death, without any delay.

sa māṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ।
jānantau tau na kuryātām
nōryvāṃ hi mama mārgaṇam ॥
Rāma, the elder brother of Lakshmaṇa,
do not know that I am still alive;
for if they do, they would not stop
searching for me all over the earth!

sa vīrō lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ।
dēvalōkamitō yātaḥ
tyaktvā dēhaṃ mahītalē ॥
Surely, that Veera,
the older brother of Lakshmaṇa,
grieving for me, must also have
left to the divine worlds from here,
discarding the mortal body on the earth.

siddhāṡca paramarṣayaḥ ।
mama paṡyanti yē nātham
rāmaṃ rājīvalōcanam ॥
Blessed indeed would be those Dēvas,
Gandharvas and Maharshis who
see my lord Rāma of lotus eyes.

mayā rāmasya rājarṣēḥ
bhāryayā paramātmanaḥ ॥
Or it could be that that sagacious Rājarshi,
who contemplates on higher objects,
does not find any use of me, his wife,
engrossed only in Dharma!

sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaṡyataḥ ।
nāṡayanti kṛtaghnāstu
na rāmō nāṡayiṣyati ॥
One likes what one sees and loses
connection with what one does not.
Those who forget the favors they received
let the relationship die; but never Rāma.

kiṃ vā bhāgyakṣayō mama ।
yāhaṃ sīdāmi rāmēṇa
hīnā mukhyēna bhāminī ॥
Or is it that I am defective?
Or is it that my good days are behind me?
Otherwise, why would I, a lovely woman,
perish like this without my chief, Rāma?

I am better dead than alive, bereft of Rāma,
a Mahātma of blemish-less character
and a Ṡūra, who decimates his foe!

martumicchāmi sarvathā ।
na ca mē vihitō mṛtyuḥ
asmin duḥkhē'pi vartatē ॥
In any case, the situation having turned out
to be what it is, I only wish that I die.
But I am not blessed with death,
even in this miserable situation.

Fortunate are the highly blessed Munis,
Mahātmas who know no sin and
exercise control over their minds,
for, they hold nothing dear or detestable.

Salutations to those Mahātmas who
detach themselves from what they like,
the loss of which creates misery,
as well as from what they do not like,
the excess of which creates fear!

and fallen into the hands of the sinful Rāvaṇa,
I wish only to give up my life.

ராக்ஷஸா: பிஸிதாஸநா: ॥
akāryaṃ yē na jānanti
nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ ।
adharmāttu mahōtpātō
bhaviṣyati hi sāṃpratam ।
naitē dharmaṃ vijānanti
rākṣasāḥ piṡitāṡanāḥ ॥
These Rākshasas of sinful deeds do not know
what should be and should not be done.
A great calamity is imminent now
because they are hurting Dharma.
These Rākshasas, who feed on raw flesh,
do not have any sense of Dharma.

dhruvaṃ māṃ prātarāṡārthē
rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati ।
sā'haṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi
taṃ vinā priyadarṡanam ।
rāmaṃ raktāntanayanam
apaṡyantī suduḥkhitā ॥
Certainly the Rākshasa is
going to have me for breakfast.
But what can I do (about it),
without Rāma, of pleasing looks (by my side)!
I am overwhelmed by grief, not seeing him,
the corners of whose eyes are blood-red!

kṣipraṃ vaivasvataṃ dēvam
paṡyēyaṃ patinā vinā ॥
If there is anyone here
who can kindly give me some poison,
I, bereft of my husband, would rather go
and visit the lord of Death, without any delay.

jānantau tau na kuryātām

Rāma, the elder brother of Lakshmaṇa,
do not know that I am still alive;
for if they do, they would not stop
searching for me all over the earth!

sa vīrō lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ।
dēvalōkamitō yātaḥ
tyaktvā dēhaṃ mahītalē ॥
Surely, that Veera,
the older brother of Lakshmaṇa,
grieving for me, must also have
left to the divine worlds from here,
discarding the mortal body on the earth.

ஸித்தாஸ்ச பரமர்ஷய: ।

siddhāṡca paramarṣayaḥ ।
mama paṡyanti yē nātham
rāmaṃ rājīvalōcanam ॥
Blessed indeed would be those Dēvas,
Gandharvas and Maharshis who
see my lord Rāma of lotus eyes.

தர்மகாமஸ்ய தீமத: ।
மயா ராமஸ்ய ராஜர்ஷே:

mayā rāmasya rājarṣēḥ
bhāryayā paramātmanaḥ ॥
Or it could be that that sagacious Rājarshi,
who contemplates on higher objects,
does not find any use of me, his wife,
engrossed only in Dharma!

ஸௌஹ்ருதம் நாஸ்த்யபஸ்யத: ।

dṛṡyamānē bhavētprītiḥ
sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaṡyataḥ ।
nāṡayanti kṛtaghnāstu
na rāmō nāṡayiṣyati ॥
One likes what one sees and loses
connection with what one does not.
Those who forget the favors they received
let the relationship die; but never Rāma.

கிம் வா பாக்யக்ஷயோ மம ।

kiṃ vā bhāgyakṣayō mama ।
yāhaṃ sīdāmi rāmēṇa
hīnā mukhyēna bhāminī ॥
Or is it that I am defective?
Or is it that my good days are behind me?
Otherwise, why would I, a lovely woman,
perish like this without my chief, Rāma?

I am better dead than alive, bereft of Rāma,
a Mahātma of blemish-less character
and a Ṡūra, who decimates his foe!

Or did the two brothers, the best among men,
give up arms, and become used to the life in the Vana,
subsisting on roots and fruits?

Or, are the heroic brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
killed by a ruse by the evil-minded
Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rakshasas?

மர்துமிச்சாமி ஸர்வதா ।

martumicchāmi sarvathā ।
na ca mē vihitō mṛtyuḥ
asmin duḥkhē'pi vartatē ॥
In any case, the situation having turned out
to be what it is, I only wish that I die.
But I am not blessed with death,
even in this miserable situation.

munayastyaktakilbiṣāḥ ।
jitātmanō mahābhāgā
yēṣāṃ na staḥ priyāpriyē ॥
Fortunate are the highly blessed Munis,
Mahātmas who know no sin and
exercise control over their minds,
for, they hold nothing dear or detestable.

apriyādadhikaṃ bhayam ।
tābhyāṃ hi yē viyujyantē
namastēṣāṃ mahātmanām ॥
Salutations to those Mahātmas who
detach themselves from what they like,
the loss of which creates misery,
as well as from what they do not like,
the excess of which creates fear!

ராமேண விதிதாத்மநா ।

sā'haṃ tyaktā priyēṇaiva
rāmēṇa viditātmanā ।
prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi pāpasya
rāvaṇasya gatā vaṡam ॥
Abjured by my beloved Rāma,
who knows very well what he does,
and fallen into the hands of the sinful Rāvaṇa,
I wish only to give up my life.

ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஷடிவம்ஸ ஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
