Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 27
In this Sarga, the Rākshasis resume badgering Seetā. Then, one of the Rākshasis by name Trijaṭa tells the others to stop. She tells them that she had a dream in which she saw Seetā reuniting with Rāma. She tells them that she saw Laṅkā being burnt down by a Vānara, an envoy of Rāma, and crumble into the ocean. She also tells that she saw Rāvaṇa and other Rakshasas drinking oil, heading south riding on inauspicious mounts such as a boar, crocodile, donkey and camel. She tells them that it is better for them to plead forgiveness from Seetā, so that Rāma may spare their lives.

When Seetā spoke thus,
the Rākshasis were terribly outraged.
Some of them went away to report it
to the evil-minded Rāvaṇa.

anarthārthamathābruvan ॥
Then those horrid-looking Rākshasis came to Seetā
and repeated the same harsh words again,
which could lead only to disaster.

The Rākshasis will eat your flesh
right now, this very day,
to their hearts’ content.

Seeing those ignoble Rākshasis thus
intimidating Seetā, an old Rākshasi, Trijaṭa,
who had been sleeping till then, said these words:

na sītāṃ bhakṣayiṣyatha ।
janakasya sutāmiṣṭām
snuṣāṃ daṡarathasya ca ॥
O ignoble ones! Eat yourself, not
Seetā, the beloved daughter of Janaka
and the daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha!

I just had a terrible dream,
which made the hair stand on its end,
presaging the destruction of the Rākshasas
and success and prosperity for her husband.

Thus told by Trijaṭa,
the enraged Rākshasis became frightened
and said these words to Trijaṭa:

ஸ்வப்நோऽயம் கீத்ருஸோ நிஸி ॥
kathayasva tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ

Tell us what kind of dream and
what you saw in it in the night!

Hearing those words that came
from the mouths of those Rākshasis,
Trijaṭa told all about that dream:

ṡuklamālyāmbaradharō
lakṣmaṇēna sahāgataḥ ॥
I saw Rāghava wearing white
robes and white garlands,
coming along with Lakshmana,
sitting in a splendid palanquin, all of ivory,
drawn in the sky by a thousand swans.

sāgarēṇa parikṣiptam
ṡvētaṃ parvatamāsthitā ।
rāmēṇa saṅgatā sītā
bhāskarēṇa prabhā yathā ॥
In the dream I saw Seetā clad in white garments
sitting on the top of a white mountain
in the middle of an ocean, and
being united with Rāma, inseparable
like luminescence from the sun.

caturdaṣṭraṃ mahāgajam ।
ārūḍhaṡṡailasaṅkāṡam
cacāra sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
I saw Rāghava, along with Lakshmaṇa,
mounted and riding on a majestic elephant
with four tusks that was huge like a mountain.

dīpyamānau svatējasā ।

jānakīṃ paryupasthitau ॥
Then those tigers among men,
wearing white garments and white garlands,
dazzling with their innate radiance,
came near Jānaki.

tatastasya nagasyāgrē
hyākāṡasthasya dantinaḥ ।
bhartrā parigṛhītasya
jānakī skandhamāṡritā ॥
Then Jānaki, from the top of that mountain,
got on to the back of the elephant
that was positioned in the sky by her husband.

candrasūryau mayā dṛṣṭā
pāṇinā parimārjatī ॥
Then I saw her, the lotus eyed one,
getting up from the lap of her husband
and touching the moon and the sun.

āsthitaḥ sa gajōttamaḥ ।
sītayā ca viṡālākṣyā
laṅkāyā uparisthitaḥ ॥
Then that splendid tusker,
with the two young brothers and Seetā on it,
hovered above Laṅkā.

rathēnāṣṭayujā svayam ।
ihōpayātaḥ kākutsthaḥ

Then Kākutstha himself, along with his wife Seetā,
came here on a chariot yoked with eight white bulls.

உத்தராம் திஸமாலோக்ய
ஜகாம புருஷோத்தம: ॥
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā
sītayā saha vīryavān ।
āruhya puṣpakaṃ divyam
vimānaṃ sūryasannibham ।
uttarāṃ diṡamālōkya
jagāma puruṣōttamaḥ ॥
Then the heroic one, that best of men,
along with Seetā and his brother Lakshmaṇa,
got into the splendid Pushpaka Vimāna
and went towards the north.

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā

It was thus that I saw in my dream
Rāma, the scion of Raghus
who equals Vishṇu in prowess,
along with Seetā and his brother Lakshmaṇa.

na hi rāmō mahātējāḥ
ṡakyō jētuṃ surāsuraiḥ ।
rākṣasairvāpi cānyairvā
svargaḥ pāpajanairiva ॥
The extremely powerful Rāma cannot be defeated by
either Suras, Asuras, Rākshasas or others,
just as heaven cannot be won over by sinners.

I also saw Rāvaṇa smeared with oil, clad in red
and adorned with a garland of Karaveera flowers,
fallen on the ground, drunk.

rāvaṇaḥ patitō bhuvi ।

muṇḍaḥ kṛṣṇāmbaraḥ punaḥ ॥
Again, I also saw Rāvaṇa,
clad in black robes and head shaven,
fallen on the ground from the Pushpaka Vimāna
and being dragged along by women.

raktamālyānulēpanaḥ ।
pibaṃstailaṃ hasannṛtyan
bhrāntacittākulēndriyaḥ ॥
He was on a chariot yoked with donkeys,
wearing red garlands and red creams,
drinking oil, laughing and dancing,
his mind gone crazy and senses out of order.

patitō'vākcirā bhūmau
gardabhādbhayamōhitaḥ ॥
I saw Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas
hurrying towards the south on a donkey,
and then falling from the donkey headlong
on the ground, gripped by fear.

bhāskarēṇa prabhā yathā ॥
In the dream I saw Seetā clad in white garments
sitting on the top of a white mountain
in the middle of an ocean, and
being united with Rāma, inseparable
like luminescence from the sun.

rāghavaṡca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ
caturdaṣṭraṃ mahāgajam ।
ārūḍhaṡṡailasaṅkāṡam
cacāra sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
I saw Rāghava, along with Lakshmaṇa,
mounted and riding on a majestic elephant
with four tusks that was huge like a mountain.

தீப்யமாநௌ ஸ்வதேஜஸா ।
ஸுக்லமால்யாம்பரதரௌ

tatastau naraṡārdūlau
dīpyamānau svatējasā ।
ṡuklamālyāmbaradharau
jānakīṃ paryupasthitau ॥
Then those tigers among men,
wearing white garments and white garlands,
dazzling with their innate radiance,
came near Jānaki.

ஹ்யாகாஸஸ்தஸ்ய தந்திந: ।
பர்த்ரா பரிக்ருஹீதஸ்ய
ஜாநகீ ஸ்கந்தமாஸ்ரிதா ॥
tatastasya nagasyāgrē
hyākāṡasthasya dantinaḥ ।
bhartrā parigṛhītasya
jānakī skandhamāṡritā ॥
Then Jānaki, from the top of that mountain,
got on to the back of the elephant
that was positioned in the sky by her husband.

தத: கமலலோசநா ।
சந்த்ரஸூர்யௌ மயா த்ருஷ்டா

tataḥ kamalalōcanā ।
candrasūryau mayā dṛṣṭā
pāṇinā parimārjatī ॥
Then I saw her, the lotus eyed one,
getting up from the lap of her husband
and touching the moon and the sun.

ஆஸ்தித: ஸ கஜோத்தம: ।
ஸீதயா ச விஸாலாக்ஷ்யா

tatastābhyāṃ kumārābhyām
āsthitaḥ sa gajōttamaḥ ।
sītayā ca viṡālākṣyā
laṅkāyā uparisthitaḥ ॥
Then that splendid tusker,
with the two young brothers and Seetā on it,
hovered above Laṅkā.

ரதேநாஷ்டயுஜா ஸ்வயம் ।
இஹோபயாத: காகுத்ஸ்த:

pāṇḍurarṣabhayuktēna
rathēnāṣṭayujā svayam ।
ihōpayātaḥ kākutsthaḥ
sītayā saha bhāryayā ॥
Then Kākutstha himself, along with his wife Seetā,
came here on a chariot yoked with eight white bulls.

5.27.19 ஈ லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
ஸீதயா ஸஹ வீர்யவாந் ।

விமாநம் ஸூர்யஸந்நிபம் ।
உத்தராம் திஸமாலோக்ய
ஜகாம புருஷோத்தம: ॥
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā
sītayā saha vīryavān ।
āruhya puṣpakaṃ divyam
vimānaṃ sūryasannibham ।
uttarāṃ diṡamālōkya
jagāma puruṣōttamaḥ ॥
Then the heroic one, that best of men,
along with Seetā and his brother Lakshmaṇa,
got into the splendid Pushpaka Vimāna
and went towards the north.

ராமோ விஷ்ணுபராக்ரம: ।
லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
ஸீதயா ஸஹ ராகவ: ॥
ēvaṃ svapnē mayā dṛṣṭō
rāmō viṣṇuparākramaḥ ।
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā
sītayā saha rāghavaḥ ॥
It was thus that I saw in my dream
Rāma, the scion of Raghus
who equals Vishṇu in prowess,
along with Seetā and his brother Lakshmaṇa.

ஸக்யோ ஜேதும் ஸுராஸுரை: ।
ராக்ஷஸைர்வாபி சாந்யைர்வா
ஸ்வர்க: பாபஜநைரிவ ॥
na hi rāmō mahātējāḥ
ṡakyō jētuṃ surāsuraiḥ ।
rākṣasairvāpi cānyairvā
svargaḥ pāpajanairiva ॥
The extremely powerful Rāma cannot be defeated by
either Suras, Asuras, Rākshasas or others,
just as heaven cannot be won over by sinners.

க்ஷிதௌ தைலஸமுக்ஷித: ।

rāvaṇaṡca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ
kṣitau tailasamukṣitaḥ ।
raktavāsāḥ pibanmattaḥ
karavīrakṛtasrajaḥ ॥
I also saw Rāvaṇa smeared with oil, clad in red
and adorned with a garland of Karaveera flowers,
fallen on the ground, drunk.

ராவண: பதிதோ புவி ।
க்ருஷ்யமாண: ஸ்த்ரியா த்ருஷ்டோ

vimānātpuṣpakādadya
rāvaṇaḥ patitō bhuvi ।
kṛṣyamāṇaḥ striyā dṛṣṭō
muṇḍaḥ kṛṣṇāmbaraḥ punaḥ ॥
Again, I also saw Rāvaṇa,
clad in black robes and head shaven,
fallen on the ground from the Pushpaka Vimāna
and being dragged along by women.

ரக்தமால்யாநுலேபந: ।
பிபம்ஸ்தைலம் ஹஸந்ந்ருத்யந்
ப்ராந்தசித்தாகுலேந்த்ரிய: ॥
rathēna kharayuktēna
raktamālyānulēpanaḥ ।
pibaṃstailaṃ hasannṛtyan
bhrāntacittākulēndriyaḥ ॥
He was on a chariot yoked with donkeys,
wearing red garlands and red creams,
drinking oil, laughing and dancing,
his mind gone crazy and senses out of order.

5.27.26 ஆ கர்தபேந யயௌ ஸீக்ரம்
தக்ஷிணாம் திஸமாஸ்தித: ।
புநரேவ மயா த்ருஷ்டோ
ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ।
பதிதோऽவாக்சிரா பூமௌ
கர்தபாத்பயமோஹித: ॥
gardabhēna yayau ṡīghram
dakṣiṇāṃ diṡamāsthitaḥ ।
punarēva mayā dṛṣṭō
rāvaṇō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
patitō'vākcirā bhūmau
gardabhādbhayamōhitaḥ ॥
I saw Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas
hurrying towards the south on a donkey,
and then falling from the donkey headlong
on the ground, gripped by fear.
