தத்த்வா ஸ தக்ஷிணம் நேத்ரம்
ப்ராணேப்ய: பரிரக்ஷித: ॥
hinastu dakṣiṇākṣi tvat
ṡara ityatha sō'bravīt ।
tatastasyākṣi kākasya
hinasti sma sa dakṣiṇam ।
dattvā sa dakṣiṇaṃ nētram
prāṇēbhyaḥ parirakṣitaḥ ॥
He then said, ‘let your arrow take my right eye!’
Then that arrow took the right eye of the crow.
The crow could save its life by giving up its right eye.

and went to his own dwelling.

kṣamasē taṃ mahīpatē ॥
You have hurled the Astra of Brahma
even on a mere a crow for my sake;
what then is the reason for
tolerating someone who has abducted me!

O bull among men! Take pity on me
and please put forth your best effort!
My lord! One who has you as her lord
should not feel like one without a protector.

ānṛṡaṃsyaṃ parō dharmaḥ
tvatta aiva mayā ṡrutaḥ ।
jānāmi tvāṃ mahāvīryam
mahōtsāhaṃ mahābalam ।
apārapāramakṣōbhyam
gāmbhīryātsāgarōpamam ।
bhartāraṃ sasamudrāyā
dharaṇyā vāsavōpamam ॥
You have yourself said that not being
inconsiderate is the greatest of virtues.
I know your immense power, zeal and strength.
Like an ocean, you are deep, imperturbable
and immeasurably vast, from one end to the other.
You are comparable to Vāsava. You are
the lord of the entire earth skirted by the oceans.

na yōjayasi rāghava ॥
O Rāghava! Why do you not direct
your Astras towards the Rākshasas,
being a man of true strength and
being the best among those who command Astras?

rāmasya samarē vēgam
ṡaktāḥ pratisamādhituṃ ॥
Neither Nāgas, nor Gandharvas, nor Dēvas,
nor the hosts of Maruts can stand against
the speed of Rāma in the battle field.

yadyasti mayi sambhramaḥ ।
kimarthaṃ na ṡaraistīkṣṇaiḥ
kṣayaṃ nayati rākṣasān ॥
If someone like him, a heroic one,
has the least of concern for me,
why does he not bring destruction
upon the Rākshasas with his sharp arrows?

Why does not even Lakshmaṇa, a Veera of
immense strength and a scorcher of his foe,
rescue me, taking permission from Rāghava?

Why are those tigers among men,
who equal the wind and fire in power,
whom even the Dēvas dare not assail, indifferent to me?

mahadasti na saṃṡayaḥ ।
samarthāvapi tau yanmām
nāvēkṣētē parantapau ॥
There must have been, without a doubt,
a big blunder that I had committed;
otherwise why would those scorchers of foe,
being as capable as they are,
turn a cold shoulder to me?

Hearing those pitiable words of Vaidēhi,
spoken with her throat choked with tears,
Hanumān, the immensely strong son of Vāyu, said:

rāmē duḥkhābhipannē ca
lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyatē ॥
Grieving for you, O Dēvi,
Rāma neglects everything else.
I swear this on truth.
And when Rāma is deluged by grief,
Lakshmaṇa becomes sad too.

imaṃ muhūrtaṃ duḥkhānām
drakṣyasyantamaninditē ॥
Somehow, you have been found.
This is no occasion to grieve.
This hour, as you shall see, O blameless one,
is the beginning of the end of all sorrows!

Those two princes of immense strength,
tigers among men, are eager to see you
and they will reduce Laṅkā to ashes.

rāghavastvāṃ viṡālākṣi
nēṣyati svāṃ purīṃ prati ॥
Slaying the cruel Rāvaṇa along with his kith and kin
in the battle field, O you of wide eyes,
Rāghava will take you back to his own city.

Please tell me what Rāghava,
Lakshmaṇa of immense strength,
the powerful Sugreeva and the
assemblage of Vānaras should be told.

When she was spoken to thus,
Seetā, who resembled a daughter of Dēvas,
said to Hanumān, the Vānara, burning with grief:

taṃ mamārthē sukhaṃ pṛccha

Please inquire about the wellbeing of
the lord of the worlds, whom Kausalya,
a large hearted lady, has given birth to,
and make prostrations, bowing the head on my behalf.

ஸுமித்ரா யேந ஸுப்ரஜா: ॥
srajaṡca sarvaratnāni
priyā yāṡca varāṅganāḥ ।
aiṡvaryaṃ ca viṡālāyām
pṛthivyāmapi durlabham ।
pitaraṃ mātaraṃ caiva
sammānyābhiprasādya ca ।
anupravrajitō rāmam
sumitrā yēna suprajāḥ ॥
He, in whom Sumitra has a wonderful son,
gave up the garlands, all the precious gems,
beautiful women whom he loved
and the vast riches that are
difficult to acquire on this earth,
and followed Rāma, after paying respect to
and with the blessings of his father and mother. Seetā goes on an endless praise for Lakshmaṇa here (in seven Ṡlōkas, as opposed to one Ṡlōka in which she inquiries about Rāma’s wellbeing), recalling his virtues and the affection and regard they have for each other.
Underlying this praise is her repentance over the extremely harsh words she spoke to him when he refused to leave her alone, to go to the presumed rescue of Rāma who went chasing the deer.
This is the first time since then that she got an opportunity to convey to Lakshmaṇa (through Hanumān) all the affection and regard she has for him and how much she appreciates his affection and regard. She falls only a wee bit short of conveying her explicit apologies for her harshness, which in the first place, caused all this unspeakable trouble and immeasurable grief.

That Dharmātma left behind
the best of the best comforts and
followed his brother Kākutstha to be
of help to him and to protect him.

He of mighty arm and lion’s shoulders,
with magnanimous heart and pleasing looks,
treated Rāma like his father and me like his mother.

vṛddhōpasēvī lakṣmīvān
ṡaktō na bahubhāṣitā ।
rājaputraḥ priyaḥ ṡrēṣṭhaḥ
sadṛṡaḥ ṡvaṡurasya mē ॥
Lakshmaṇa, the Veera did not know
that I was being carried off.
He, the blessed one, who serves his elders,
is a man of many abilities and few words.
He, a great prince, is the beloved
and the likeness of my father-in-law.

niyuktō dhuri yasyāṃ tu
tāmudvahati vīryavān ॥
Lakshmaṇa, his brother,
is dearer to Rāma than even I am.
He, the man of prowess, carries out well
any responsibility that is laid upon him.

having whom by his side, Rāghava
does not miss even his deceased father.

priyō rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ ।

duḥkhakṣayakarō bhavēt ।
tvamasminkāryaniryōgē
pramāṇaṃ harisattamaḥ ।
rāghavastvatsamārambhān
mayi yatnaparō bhavēt ॥
Lakshmaṇa, the capable one who is ever
pleasant, simple and dear to Rāma,
should be the one who destroys this sorrow,
and that, O eminent and best of Vānaras,
depends on the key role you play!
It is only with your concerted effort that
Rāghava would focus all his energies on me (my rescue).

māsaṃ daṡarathātmaja ।
ūrdhvaṃ māsānna jīvēyam

I can hold on to this life for
only one more month, O son of Daṡaratha!
I will not live any longer than a month;
What I say is nothing but the truth.

O Veera! You shall rescue me
from this Rāvaṇa of evil deeds,
who humiliated me by taking me captive,
as Indra’s sovereignty was retrieved from Pātāla!

sā nirīkṣya tataḥ sarvam
vēṇyāṃ grathitamuttamam ।
vimucya pradadau tasmai
maṇiratnaṃ hanūmatē ।
dēyō'yaṃ rāghavāyēti
sītā surasutōpamā ॥
Then looking around everywhere,
Seetā, who was like a daughter of the Dēvas,
found an excellent jewel
that was locked in her tresses
and took it off and gave it to Hanumān
saying, ‘give this to Rāghava’.

The eminent Vānara took that gem of a jewel,
saluted and circumambulated her
and stood by her with deference.

Feeling extremely happy about having seen Seetā,
his mind went to Rāma, while his body stood there.

maṇivaramupagṛhya taṃ mahārhaṃ
janakanṛpātmajayā dhṛtaṃ purastāt ।
druma iva pavanādhūtamūrtiḥ
kṣubhitatanurhanumān kṛtastadānīm ॥
Holding that gem of a jewel
that only great souls deserve,
which was worn till then by
the daughter of king Janaka,
Hanumān felt his body shaking
like a tree hit by high winds.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே

hinastu dakṣiṇākṣi tvat
ṡara ityatha sō'bravīt ।
tatastasyākṣi kākasya
hinasti sma sa dakṣiṇam ।
dattvā sa dakṣiṇaṃ nētram
prāṇēbhyaḥ parirakṣitaḥ ॥
He then said, ‘let your arrow take my right eye!’
Then that arrow took the right eye of the crow.
The crow could save its life by giving up its right eye.

tolerating someone who has abducted me!

You have yourself said that not being
inconsiderate is the greatest of virtues.
I know your immense power, zeal and strength.
Like an ocean, you are deep, imperturbable
and immeasurably vast, from one end to the other.
You are comparable to Vāsava. You are
the lord of the entire earth skirted by the oceans.

the speed of Rāma in the battle field.

why does he not bring destruction
upon the Rākshasas with his sharp arrows?

a big blunder that I had committed;
otherwise why would those scorchers of foe,
being as capable as they are,
turn a cold shoulder to me?

Hanumān, the immensely strong son of Vāyu, said:

Grieving for you, O Dēvi,
Rāma neglects everything else.
I swear this on truth.
And when Rāma is deluged by grief,
Lakshmaṇa becomes sad too.

Somehow, you have been found.
This is no occasion to grieve.
This hour, as you shall see, O blameless one,
is the beginning of the end of all sorrows!

Those two princes of immense strength,
tigers among men, are eager to see you
and they will reduce Laṅkā to ashes.

in the battle field, O you of wide eyes,
Rāghava will take you back to his own city.

a large hearted lady, has given birth to,
and make prostrations, bowing the head on my behalf.

srajaṡca sarvaratnāni
priyā yāṡca varāṅganāḥ ।
aiṡvaryaṃ ca viṡālāyām
pṛthivyāmapi durlabham ।
pitaraṃ mātaraṃ caiva
sammānyābhiprasādya ca ।
anupravrajitō rāmam
sumitrā yēna suprajāḥ ॥
He, in whom Sumitra has a wonderful son,
gave up the garlands, all the precious gems,
beautiful women whom he loved
and the vast riches that are
difficult to acquire on this earth,
and followed Rāma, after paying respect to
and with the blessings of his father and mother. Seetā goes on an endless praise for Lakshmaṇa here (in seven Ṡlōkas, as opposed to one Ṡlōka in which she inquiries about Rāma’s wellbeing), recalling his virtues and the affection and regard they have for each other.
Underlying this praise is her repentance over the extremely harsh words she spoke to him when he refused to leave her alone, to go to the presumed rescue of Rāma who went chasing the deer.
This is the first time since then that she got an opportunity to convey to Lakshmaṇa (through Hanumān) all the affection and regard she has for him and how much she appreciates his affection and regard. She falls only a wee bit short of conveying her explicit apologies for her harshness, which in the first place, caused all this unspeakable trouble and immeasurable grief.

the best of the best comforts and

of help to him and to protect him.

treated Rāma like his father and me like his mother.

sadṛṡaḥ ṡvaṡurasya mē ॥
Lakshmaṇa, the Veera did not know
that I was being carried off.
He, the blessed one, who serves his elders,
is a man of many abilities and few words.
He, a great prince, is the beloved
and the likeness of my father-in-law.

niyuktō dhuri yasyāṃ tu
tāmudvahati vīryavān ॥
Lakshmaṇa, his brother,
is dearer to Rāma than even I am.
He, the man of prowess, carries out well
any responsibility that is laid upon him.

pramāṇaṃ harisattamaḥ ।
rāghavastvatsamārambhān
mayi yatnaparō bhavēt ॥
Lakshmaṇa, the capable one who is ever
pleasant, simple and dear to Rāma,
should be the one who destroys this sorrow,
and that, O eminent and best of Vānaras,
depends on the key role you play!
It is only with your concerted effort that
Rāghava would focus all his energies on me (my rescue).

What I say is nothing but the truth.

Then looking around everywhere,
Seetā, who was like a daughter of the Dēvas,
found an excellent jewel
that was locked in her tresses
and took it off and gave it to Hanumān
saying, ‘give this to Rāghava’.

saluted and circumambulated her
and stood by her with deference.

ஜநகந்ருபாத்மஜயா த்ருதம் புரஸ்தாத் ।
த்ரும இவ பவநாதூதமூர்தி:
க்ஷுபிததநுர்ஹநுமாந் க்ருதஸ்ததாநீம் ॥
maṇivaramupagṛhya taṃ mahārhaṃ
janakanṛpātmajayā dhṛtaṃ purastāt ।
druma iva pavanādhūtamūrtiḥ
kṣubhitatanurhanumān kṛtastadānīm ॥
Holding that gem of a jewel
that only great souls deserve,
which was worn till then by
the daughter of king Janaka,
Hanumān felt his body shaking
like a tree hit by high winds.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே அஷ்டத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭatriṃṡassargaḥ॥

the first ever poem of humankind,
