    Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 41
    In this Sarga, after taking leave from Seetā, Hanumān thinks that he should assess the strength of the enemy vis-à-vis their own before going back, if he is to follow the command of Sugreeva to the fullest, for, he reasons, that a capable person should always do more than what is expected of him. He then plans to force a fight between himself and the Rākshasas. He thinks of destroying the Aṡōka Vana and hence prompt Rāvaṇa to send his troops to attack him.

    Honored by her with such words
    of high praise as he was set to leave,
    the Vānara went a little away from
    that place and paused, thinking:

    dṛṣṭēyamasitēkṣaṇā ।
    trīnupāyānatikramya
    caturthaḥ iha dṛṡyatē ॥
    I have seen her, of dark eyes,
    but there is a little bit of work left.
    It seems to be time now to deploy
    the fourth Upāya, going beyond the first three.
    The first three Upāyas are Sāma, Dana and Bhēda.
    The fourth one is Daṇḍa.

    5.41.3 ஈ ந ஸாம ரக்ஷஸ்ஸு குணாய கல்பதே
    ந தாநமர்தோபசிதேஷு யுஜ்யதே ।
    ந பேதஸாத்யா பலதர்பிதா ஜநா:
    பராக்ரமஸ்த்வேவ மமேஹ ரோசதே ॥
    na sāma rakṣassu guṇāya kalpatē
    na dānamarthōpacitēṣu yujyatē ।
    na bhēdasādhyā baladarpitā janāḥ
    parākramastvēva mamēha rōcatē ॥
    Sāma would be of no effect on Rākshasas.
    Dāna is not suitable in dealing with
    people who are plump with riches.
    People overweening with strength
    can hardly be won by Bhēda.
    I feel that I should show off my prowess here.

    விநிஸ்சய: கஸ்சிதிஹோபபத்யதே ।
    ஹதப்ரவீரா ஹி ரணே ஹி ராக்ஷஸா:
    கதஞ்சிதீயுர்யதிஹாத்ய மார்தவம் ॥
    na cāsya kāryasya parākramādṛtē
    viniṡcayaḥ kaṡcidihōpapadyatē ।
    hatapravīrā hi raṇē hi rākṣasāḥ
    kathañcidīyuryadihādya mārdavam ॥
    Nothing but resorting to the display of prowess
    will work in a situation like this.
    The Rākshasas may soften if
    some of the best of their warriors
    are killed in a fight.

    யோ பஹூந்யபி ஸாதயேத் ।
    பூர்வகார்யாவிரோதேந

    kāryē karmaṇi nirdiṣṭē
    yō bahūnyapi sādhayēt ।
    pūrvakāryāvirōdhēna
    sa kāryaṃ kartumarhati ॥
    Once assigned to a task,
    the one who accomplishes more without putting in jeopardy
    what has already been accomplished,
    is the one who is truly fit for any task.

    ஸ்வல்பஸ்யாபீஹ கர்மண: ।
    யோ ஹ்யர்தம் பஹுதா வேத
    ஸ ஸமர்தோऽர்தஸாதநே ॥
    na hyēkassādhakō hētuḥ
    svalpasyāpīha karmaṇaḥ ।
    yō hyarthaṃ bahudhā vēda
    sa samarthō'rthasādhanē ॥
    No matter how small a task is,
    there is always more than one way to accomplish it.
    Only one who can think of multiple means
    to accomplish an end is the one who is
    truly capable of accomplishing anything.

    5.41.7 ஈ இஹைவ தாவத்க்ருதநிஸ்சயோ ஹ்யஹம்
    யதி வ்ரஜேயம் ப்லவகேஸ்வராலயம் ।
    பராத்மஸம்மர்தவிஸேஷதத்த்வவித்
    தத: க்ருதம் ஸ்யாந்மம பர்த்ருஸாஸநம் ॥
    ihaiva tāvatkṛtaniṡcayō hyahaṃ
    yadi vrajēyaṃ plavagēṡvarālayam ।
    parātmasammardaviṡēṣatattvavit
    tataḥ kṛtaṃ syānmama bhartṛṡāsanam ॥
    Only if I assess thoroughly
    the strengths of ourselves and the enemies
    before I get back to the
    abode of the lord of Vānaras,
    can I be said to have executed
    the orders given by my lord to the fullest.

    ப்ரஸஹ்ய யுத்தம் மம ராக்ஷஸை: ஸஹ ।

    ஸம்மாநயேந்மாம் ச ரணே தஸாநந: ॥
    kathaṃ nu khalvadya bhavētsukhāgataṃ
    prasahya yuddhaṃ mama rākṣasaiḥ saha ।
    tathaiva khalvātmabalaṃ ca sāravat
    sammānayēnmāṃ ca raṇē daṡānanaḥ ॥
    I wonder how a combat between
    me and the Rākshasas can be forced, easily?
    How could the Ten-faced get a sense of
    the extent of my strength in a combat, easily?

    5.41.9 ஈ ததஸ்ஸமாஸாத்ய ரணே தஸாநநம்
    ஸமந்த்ரிவர்கம் ஸபலப்ரயாயிநம் ।
    ஹ்ருதி ஸ்திதம் தஸ்ய மதம் பலம் ச வை
    ஸுகேந மத்த்வாऽஹமித: புநர்வ்ரஜே ॥
    tatassamāsādya raṇē daṡānanaṃ
    samantrivargaṃ sabalaprayāyinam ।
    hṛdi sthitaṃ tasya mataṃ balaṃ ca vai
    sukhēna mattvā'hamitaḥ punarvrajē ॥
    Facing the Ten-faced along with
    his ministers, followers and army in a combat,
    I shall know how he operates
    and what his strength is, and then
    I can go back from here happily!

    நந்தநோபமமுத்தமம் ।
    வநம் நேத்ரமந:காந்தம்

    idamasya nṛṡaṃsasya
    nandanōpamamuttamam ।
    vanaṃ nētramanaḥkāntam
    nānādrumalatāyutam ॥
    This excellent Vana, full of a variety trees and vines,
    comparable to the Nandana gardens (of Kubēra),
    which delights the eye and captivates the hearts
    belongs to that cruel one.

    ஸுஷ்கம் வநமிவாநல: ।
    அஸ்மிந்பக்நே தத: கோபம்

    idaṃ vidhvaṃsayiṣyāmi
    ṡuṣkaṃ vanamivānalaḥ ।
    asminbhagnē tataḥ kōpam
    kariṣyati daṡānanaḥ ॥
    I will destroy this (Vana)
    like fire does dry woods.
    Its destruction will (certainly)
    provoke the rage of the Ten-necked.

    5.41.12 ஈ ததோ மஹத்ஸாஸ்வமஹாரதத்விபம்
    பலம் ஸமாதேக்ஷ்யதி ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ।
    த்ரிஸூலகாலாயஸபட்டிஸாயுதம்
    ததோ மஹத்யுத்தமிதம் பவிஷ்யதி ॥
    tatō mahatsāṡvamahārathadvipaṃ
    balaṃ samādēkṣyati rākṣasādhipaḥ ।
    triṡūlakālāyasapaṭṭisāyudhaṃ
    tatō mahadyuddhamidaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥
    Then he will order a huge contingent
    with its full complement of cavalry,
    chariot and elephant forces armed with
    Triṡulas and Paṭṭisas to attack me.
    And then there will ensue a great battle.

    5.41.13 ஈ அஹம் து தை: ஸம்யதி சண்டவிக்ரமை:
    ஸமேத்ய ரக்ஷோபிரஸஹ்ய விக்ரம: ।
    நிஹத்ய தத்ராவணசோதிதம் பலம்
    ஸுகம் கமிஷ்யாமி கபீஸ்வராலயம் ॥
    ahaṃ tu taiḥ saṃyati caṇḍavikramaiḥ
    samētya rakṣōbhirasahya vikramaḥ ।
    nihatya tadrāvaṇacōditaṃ balaṃ
    sukhaṃ gamiṣyāmi kapīṡvarālayam ॥
    Facing those Rākshasas of terrible prowess,
    I shall display my own prowess
    that no one can stand against and
    destroy that army sent by Rāvaṇa,
    before I can head back to the
    abode of the lord of Vānaras happily.

    மாருதிர்பீமவிக்ரம: ।
    ஊருவேகேந மஹதா
    த்ருமாந்க்ஷேப்துமதாரபத் ॥
    tatō mārutavatkṛddhō
    mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ ।
    ūruvēgēna mahatā
    drumānkṣēptumathārabhat ॥
    Then with a rage that only the god of Wind can show,
    the son of the Wind god, of terrible prowess,
    began to knock off the trees with
    the great speed of his thighs.

    பபஞ்ஜ ப்ரமதாவநம் ।

    tatastu hanumānvīrō
    babhañja pramadāvanam ।
    mattadvijasamāghuṣṭam
    nānādrumalatāyutam ॥
    Hanumān, the Veera, then
    laid waste that women’s pleasance,
    crowded with birds drunk with love
    and filled with trees and creepers of all kinds.

    பிந்நைஸ்ச ஸலிலாஸயை: ।

    tadvanaṃ mathitairvṛkṣaiḥ
    bhinnaiṡca salilāṡayaiḥ ।
    cūrṇitaiḥ parvatāgraiṡca
    babhūvāpriyadarṡanam ॥
    With its trees battered down,
    its reservoirs breached and
    its mountain crests turned to dust,
    that pleasance became the most unpleasing sight.

    தாவாநலஹதம் யதா ।
    வ்யாகுலாவரணா ரேஜு:
    விஹ்வலா இவ தா லதா: ॥
    nānāṡakuntavirutaiḥ
    prabhinnaissalilāṡayaiḥ ।
    tāmraiḥ kisalayaiḥ klāntaiḥ
    klāntadrumalatāyutam ।
    na babhau tadvanaṃ tatra
    dāvānalahataṃ yathā ।
    vyākulāvaraṇā rējuḥ
    vihvalā iva tā latāḥ ॥
    With its many kinds of birds screeching,
    its water reservoirs breached,
    reddish tender shoots of the
    trees and creepers wilting,
    that Vana had no allure left,
    as if it was hit by a forest fire.
    With the trellises bent out of shape,
    the creepers looked like women in distress.

    மஹோரகைர்வ்யாலம்ருகைஸ்ச நிர்துதை: ।
    ஸிலாக்ருஹைருந்மதிதைஸ்ததா க்ருஹை:
    ப்ரணஷ்டரூபம் ததபூந்மஹத்வநம் ॥
    latāgṛhaiṡcitragṛhaiṡca nāṡitaiḥ
    mahōragairvyālamṛgaiṡca nirdhutaiḥ ।
    ṡilāgṛhairunmathitaistathā gṛhaiḥ
    praṇaṣṭarūpaṃ tadabhūnmahadvanam ॥
    With its arbors and galleries destroyed,
    its great serpents and wild beasts let loose and
    the houses made of stone and others shattered
    that great Vana lay completely disfigured.

    வநஸ்தலீ ஸோகலதாப்ரதாநா ।

    sā vihvalā'ṡōkalatāpratānā
    vanasthalī ṡōkalatāpratānā ।
    jātā daṡāsyapramadāvanasya
    kapērbalāddhi pramadāvanasya ॥
    With the impact of the force of that Vānara,
    that wooded area, a women’s pleasance,
    which served as a resort for the women of Rāvaṇa
    with creepers that had Aṡōka trees for their trellises,
    had become a trellis for the wilting creepers.

    மஹத்வ்யலீகம் மநஸோ மஹாத்மந: ।
    யுயுத்ஸுரேகோ பஹுபிர்மஹாபலை:
    ஸ்ரியா ஜ்வலம்ஸ்தோரணமாஸ்தித: கபி: ॥
    sa tasya kṛtvā jagatīpatērmahān
    mahadvyalīkaṃ manasō mahātmanaḥ ।
    yuyutsurēkō bahubhirmahābalaiḥ
    ṡriyā jvalaṃstōraṇamāsthitaḥ kapiḥ ॥
    The great Vānara, having thus caused
    terrible damage to the ego of
    that mighty ruler of the earth,
    settled himself on the archway,
    his power radiating all around him,
    eager to fight, all by himself,
    however many mighty strong ones that might turn up.
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஏகசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    sundarakāṇḍē ēkacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ॥
    Thus concludes the forty first Sarga
    in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
