Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 47
In this Sarga, hearing that the five army chiefs were killed, Rāvaṇa hints at his young son Aksha to take on Hanumān. Young, energetic, powerful and eager to win a fight, he springs forth and goes to attack Hanumān. Aksha is seized with amazement looking at that great Vānara and makes no attempt to hide his reverence towards him. The fight between the two capable warriors attracts the curiosity of even Suras and Asuras.
In turn, Hanumān could not help but appreciate the prowess of the young prince in the battle. But he realizes that he has to put an end to that young warrior like one would to a raging fire. First, he kills the horses of the chariot with his open palm, making the chariot fall down from the sky on to the ground. Then he grabs Aksha by the feet and flings him in the air a thousand times before throwing him down on the ground with force and killing him and thus putting fear in Rāvaṇa.

Hearing that the five army chiefs and
their forces and vehicles were annihilated,
the king looked (suggestively) at the young Aksha
who sat in front of him, ravening for a fight.

Spurred by that look and taking the cue,
the valiant one armed with a
splendid bow decked with gold,
sprang up like flames shooting up from the altar,
when oblations are made in it by great Brāhmaṇas.

ஸஹேமதாம்நா ஸஸிஸூர்யவர்சஸா ।
திவாகŕ ��ாபம் ரதமாஸ்திதஸ்தத:
ஸ நிர்ஜகாமாமரதுல்யவிக்ரம: ॥
tatastapassaṅgrahasańcayārjitam
prataptajāmbūnadajālaṡōbhitam ।
patākinaṃ ratnavibhūṣitadhvajaṃ
manōjavāṣṭāṡvavaraiḥ suyōjitam ।
surāsurādhṛṣyamasaṅgacāriṇam
raviprabhaṃ vyōmacaraṃ samāhitam ।
satūṇamaṣṭāsinibaddhabandhuram
yathākramāvēṡitaṡaktitōmaram ।
virājamānaṃ pratipūrṇavastunā
sahēmadāmnā ṡaṡisūryavarcasā ।
divākarābhaṃ rathamāsthitastataḥ
sa nirjagāmāmaratulyavikramaḥ ॥
He, whose prowess was comparable to that of Dēvas,
went forth from there, sitting on the chariot that was
shining with the lacework of gold purified in fire,
sporting many flags and flag posts studded with gems,
yoked with eight horses that were as swift as the mind,
unassailable even by Sura and Asuras,
dazzling like the sun who lights up the day,
constructed well to dart over
all kinds of obstacles and race in the air,
fitted with bells, quivers,
and eight swords hung in their places,
and Ṡaktis and Tōmaras arranged in rows
and filled with all the essential supplies,
dazzling like the sun and the moon
with garlands of gold hanging around it,
which he earned by performing many a kind of Tapa.

sa pūrayankhaṃ ca mahīṃ ca sācalām
turaṅgamātaṅgamahārathasvanaiḥ ।
balaissamētaissahi tōraṇasthitam
samarthamāsīnamupāgamatkapim ॥
Accompanied by his forces and filling
the sky and the earth and its mountains
with the din of horses’ neighing,
elephants’ trumpeting and chariots’ rumbling,
he reached the talented Vānara seated on the archway.

ஸமைக்ஷதாக்ஷோ பஹுமாநசக்ஷுஷா ॥
sa taṃ samāsādya hariṃ harīkṣaṇō
yugāntakālāgnimiva prajākṣayē ।
avasthitaṃ vismitajātasambhramaḥ
samaikṣatākṣō bahumānacakṣuṣā ॥
Reaching the Vānara who was
standing there like the fire of Dissolution
waiting to annihilate all creatures,
Aksha was moved with amazement
and looked at him with great reverence
filled in his lion-like eyes.

sa tasya vēgaṃ ca kapērmahātmanaḥ
parākramaṃ cāriṣu pārthivātmajaḥ ।
vidhārayansvaṃ ca balaṃ mahābalō
himakṣayē sūrya ivābhivardhatē ॥
After weighing his own strength
against the mighty Vānara’s
speed and prowess against his foe,
that prince of immense strength
began to swell up in spirit like
the glow of the sun when the mist clears.

ப்ரசோதயாமாஸ ஸரைஸ்த்ரிபி ஸ்ஸிதை: ॥
sa jātamanyuḥ prasamīkṣya vikramaṃ
sthiram sthirassamyati durnivāraṇam ।
samāhitātmā hanumantamāhavē
pracōdayāmāsa ṡaraistribhi ṡṡitaiḥ ॥
Taking a good look at him
who stood unshakable, betraying his prowess
and whom none could contain in battle,
he, who was equally unshakable and focused,
became angry and provoked Hanumān
for a fight, shooting three sharp arrows.

ஸபாணபாணி: ப்ரக்ருஹீதகார்முக: ॥
tataḥ kapiṃ taṃ prasamīkṣya garvitam
jitaṡramaṃ ṡatruparājayōrjitam ।
avaikṣatākṣassamudīrṇamānasaḥ
sabāṇapāṇiḥ pragṛhītakārmukaḥ ॥
Taking a good look at that Vānara
who knew no fatigue and who was
prideful, having defeated his enemies,
Aksha, holding bow and arrows in his hand,
gave him a look that betrayed his own pride.

sa hēmaniṣkāṅgadacārukuṇḍalaḥ
samāsasādā'ṡuparākramaḥ kapim ।
tayōrbabhūvāpratimassamāgamaḥ
surāsurāṇāmapi sambhramapradaḥ ॥
Thus he, adorned with gold medallions,
armlets and lovely ear-pendants,
attacked the Vānara with his dashing prowess,
and the duel between such unparalleled (fighters)
roused curiosity even among Suras and Asuras.

நநாத ச த்யௌருததிஸ்ச சுக்ஷுபே ॥
rarāsa bhūmirna tatāpa bhānumān
vavau na vāyuḥ pracācala cācalaḥ ।
kapēḥ kumārasya ca vīkṣya saṃyugam
nanāda ca dyaurudadhiṡca cukṣubhē ॥
The earth groaned, the sun stopped scorching,
the wind stopped blowing, the mountains shook,
the sky thundered and the oceans were agitated,
watching the fight between
the Vānara and that young prince.

ஸராநத த்ரீந்கபிமூர்த்ந்யபாதயத் ॥
tatassa vīrassumukhān patatriṇaḥ
suvarṇapuṅkhānsaviṣānivōragān ।
samādhisamyōgavimōkṣatattvavit
ṡarānatha trīnkapimūrdhnyapātayat ॥
Then that Veera, who was an expert
at aiming, launching and shooting,
lodged three arrows, which
had sharp tips and feathers on them
and were poisonous like snakes,
on the head of the Vānara.

sa taiṡṡarairmūrdhni samaṃ nipātitaiḥ
kṣarannasṛgdigdhavivṛttalōcanaḥ ।
navōditādityanibhaṡṡarāṃṡumān
vyarājatāditya ivāṃṡumālikaḥ ॥
With those arrows falling on his head simultaneously,
blood welled, bedaubing his rolling eyes.
He looked like the sun of massed rays just risen,
with those arrows for the rays.

tatassa piṅgādhipamantrisattamaḥ
samīkṣya taṃ rājavarātmajaṃ raṇē ।
udagracitrāyudhacitrakārmukaṃ
jaharṣa cāpūryata cāhavōnmukhaḥ ॥
Watching that son of the great king
wielding a variety of weapons and
a curious-looking bow in that battle field,
that eminent minister of the king of Vānaras
was amused and increased his body size
getting ready for the fight.

விவ்ருத்தகோபோ பலவீர்யஸம்யுத: ।

ததாஹ நேத்ராக்நிமரீசிபிஸ்ததா ॥
sa mandarāgrastha ivāṃṡumālikō
vivṛddhakōpō balavīryasaṃyutaḥ ।
kumāramakṣaṃ sabalaṃ savāhanaṃ
dadāha nētrāgnimarīcibhistadā ॥
With his anger rising to new heights,
he who was endowed with strength and valor,
looked like the sun risen
above the top of Mandara Mountain.
With the sparks that emanated
from the fire of his eyes,
he, all but burnt the young Aksha
along with his army and vehicles.

tatassa bāṇāsanacitrakārmukaḥ
ṡarapravarṣō yudhi rākṣasāmbudaḥ ।
ṡarānmumōcāṡu harīṡvarācalē
valāhakō vṛṣṭimivācalōttamē ॥
With the Rākshasa like a cloud,
his bow for a rainbow,
and the lordly Vānaras for a mountain,
the torrent of arrows he released
resembled a downpour dropped
by a cloud on a great mountain.

nanāda harṣād ghanatulyavikramam ॥
Taking note of the fiery fighting prowess
of the young Aksha accompanied by
his increasing power, strength and valor
and his expanse that matched a cloudthe Vānara delightedly let off a big shout.

விதாரயந்ஸ்வம் ச பலம் மஹாபலோ
ஹிமக்ஷயே ஸூர்ய இவாபிவர்ததே ॥
sa tasya vēgaṃ ca kapērmahātmanaḥ
parākramaṃ cāriṣu pārthivātmajaḥ ।
vidhārayansvaṃ ca balaṃ mahābalō
himakṣayē sūrya ivābhivardhatē ॥
After weighing his own strength
against the mighty Vānara’s
speed and prowess against his foe,
that prince of immense strength
began to swell up in spirit like
the glow of the sun when the mist clears.

ஸ்திரம் ஸ்திரஸ்ஸம்யதி துர்நிவாரணம் ।
ஸமாஹிதாத்மா ஹநுமந்தமாஹவே
ப்ரசோதயாமாஸ ஸரைஸ்த்ரிபி ஸ்ஸிதை: ॥
sa jātamanyuḥ prasamīkṣya vikramaṃ
sthiram sthirassamyati durnivāraṇam ।
samāhitātmā hanumantamāhavē
pracōdayāmāsa ṡaraistribhi ṡṡitaiḥ ॥
Taking a good look at him
who stood unshakable, betraying his prowess
and whom none could contain in battle,
he, who was equally unshakable and focused,
became angry and provoked Hanumān
for a fight, shooting three sharp arrows.

5.47.11 ஈ தத: கபிம் தம் ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய கர்விதம்
ஜிதஸ்ரமம் ஸத்ருபராஜயோர்ஜிதம் ।
அவைக்ஷதாக்ஷஸ்ஸமுதீர்ணமாநஸ:
ஸபாணபாணி: ப்ரக்ருஹீதகார்முக: ॥
tataḥ kapiṃ taṃ prasamīkṣya garvitam
jitaṡramaṃ ṡatruparājayōrjitam ।
avaikṣatākṣassamudīrṇamānasaḥ
sabāṇapāṇiḥ pragṛhītakārmukaḥ ॥
Taking a good look at that Vānara
who knew no fatigue and who was
prideful, having defeated his enemies,
Aksha, holding bow and arrows in his hand,
gave him a look that betrayed his own pride.

ஸமாஸஸாதாऽஸுபராக்ரம: கபிம் ।
தயோர்பபூவாப்ரதிமஸ்ஸமாகம:
ஸுராஸுராணாமபி ஸம்ப்ரமப்ரத: ॥
sa hēmaniṣkāṅgadacārukuṇḍalaḥ
samāsasādā'ṡuparākramaḥ kapim ।
tayōrbabhūvāpratimassamāgamaḥ
surāsurāṇāmapi sambhramapradaḥ ॥
Thus he, adorned with gold medallions,
armlets and lovely ear-pendants,
attacked the Vānara with his dashing prowess,
and the duel between such unparalleled (fighters)
roused curiosity even among Suras and Asuras.

வவௌ ந வாயு: ப்ரசாசல சாசல: ।
கபே: குமாரஸ்ய ச வீக்ஷ்ய ஸம்யுகம்
நநாத ச த்யௌருததிஸ்ச சுக்ஷுபே ॥
rarāsa bhūmirna tatāpa bhānumān
vavau na vāyuḥ pracācala cācalaḥ ।
kapēḥ kumārasya ca vīkṣya saṃyugam
nanāda ca dyaurudadhiṡca cukṣubhē ॥
The earth groaned, the sun stopped scorching,
the wind stopped blowing, the mountains shook,
the sky thundered and the oceans were agitated,
watching the fight between
the Vānara and that young prince.

ஸுவர்ணபுங்காந்ஸவிஷாநிவோரகாந் ।
ஸமாதிஸம்யோகவிமோக்ஷதத்த்வவித்
ஸராநத த்ரீந்கபிமூர்த்ந்யபாதயத் ॥
tatassa vīrassumukhān patatriṇaḥ
suvarṇapuṅkhānsaviṣānivōragān ।
samādhisamyōgavimōkṣatattvavit
ṡarānatha trīnkapimūrdhnyapātayat ॥
Then that Veera, who was an expert
at aiming, launching and shooting,
lodged three arrows, which
had sharp tips and feathers on them
and were poisonous like snakes,
on the head of the Vānara.

க்ஷரந்நஸ்ருக்திக்தவிவ்ருத்தலோசந: ।
நவோதிதாதித்யநிபஸ்ஸராம்ஸுமாந்
வ்யராஜதாதித்ய இவாம்ஸுமாலிக: ॥
sa taiṡṡarairmūrdhni samaṃ nipātitaiḥ
kṣarannasṛgdigdhavivṛttalōcanaḥ ।
navōditādityanibhaṡṡarāṃṡumān
vyarājatāditya ivāṃṡumālikaḥ ॥
With those arrows falling on his head simultaneously,
blood welled, bedaubing his rolling eyes.
He looked like the sun of massed rays just risen,
with those arrows for the rays.

ஸமீக்ஷ்ய தம் ராஜவராத்மஜம் ரணே ।
உதக்ரசித்ராயுதசித்ரகார்முகம்
ஜஹர்ஷ சாபூர்யத சாஹவோந்முக: ॥
tatassa piṅgādhipamantrisattamaḥ
samīkṣya taṃ rājavarātmajaṃ raṇē ।
udagracitrāyudhacitrakārmukaṃ
jaharṣa cāpūryata cāhavōnmukhaḥ ॥
Watching that son of the great king
wielding a variety of weapons and
a curious-looking bow in that battle field,
that eminent minister of the king of Vānaras
was amused and increased his body size
getting ready for the fight.

5.47.17 ஈ ஸ மந்தராக்ரஸ்த இவாம்ஸுமாலிகோ
விவ்ருத்தகோபோ பலவீர்யஸம்யுத: ।
குமாரமக்ஷம் ஸபலம் ஸவாஹநம்
ததாஹ நேத்ராக்நிமரீசிபிஸ்ததா ॥
sa mandarāgrastha ivāṃṡumālikō
vivṛddhakōpō balavīryasaṃyutaḥ ।
kumāramakṣaṃ sabalaṃ savāhanaṃ
dadāha nētrāgnimarīcibhistadā ॥
With his anger rising to new heights,
he who was endowed with strength and valor,
looked like the sun risen
above the top of Mandara Mountain.
With the sparks that emanated
from the fire of his eyes,
he, all but burnt the young Aksha
along with his army and vehicles.

ஸரப்ரவர்ஷோ யுதி ராக்ஷஸாம்புத: ।
ஸராந்முமோசாஸு ஹரீஸ்வராசலே
வலாஹகோ வ்ருஷ்டிமிவாசலோத்தமே ॥
tatassa bāṇāsanacitrakārmukaḥ
ṡarapravarṣō yudhi rākṣasāmbudaḥ ।
ṡarānmumōcāṡu harīṡvarācalē
valāhakō vṛṣṭimivācalōttamē ॥
With the Rākshasa like a cloud,
his bow for a rainbow,
and the lordly Vānaras for a mountain,
the torrent of arrows he released
resembled a downpour dropped
by a cloud on a great mountain.

விவ்ருத்ததேஜோபலவீர்யஸம்யுதம் ।

நநாத ஹர்ஷாத் கநதுல்யவிக்ரமம் ॥
tataḥ kapistaṃ raṇacaṇḍavikramaṃ
vivṛddhatējōbalavīryasaṃyutam ।
kumāramakṣaṃ prasamīkṣya saṃyugē
nanāda harṣād ghanatulyavikramam ॥
Taking note of the fiery fighting prowess
of the young Aksha accompanied by
his increasing power, strength and valor
and his expanse that matched a cloudthe Vānara delightedly let off a big shout.
