Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 48
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa comes to terms with the fact that the young Aksha was killed. He instructs Indrajit, after extolling his virtues and capabilities and posing full confidence in him, to attack the Vānara. He implores him to plan carefully as the Vānara is very powerful and swift.
With his spirits riding high, Indrajit goes in his splendid chariot to attack Hanumān. Both of them being of immense speed and strength, none could find a slip in the other that would allow him to gain an upper hand.
Failing to hit Hanumān with his arrows, and realizing that it is impossible to kill the Vānara, Indrajit casts the Astra of Brahma on him. With the power of that Astra, Hanuman becomes motionless. The Rākshasas quickly gather around him and tie him with ropes of hemps and twine of tree bark. But Hanumān gets freed from the Astra, as that Astra becomes ineffective when another bond is imposed on it.
The Rākshasas drag him to the court of Rāvaṇa, beating him with fists and sticks on the way. Rāvaṇa and Hanumān see each other. Rāvaṇa orders his chief ministers to question him.

Coming to terms with the fact
that the young Aksha was killed by Hanumān,
the mighty lord of Rākshasas,
resentful and angry, instructed Indrajit
who was comparable to Dēvas (in his prowess):

பிதாமஹாராதநஸஞ்சிதாஸ்த்ர: ॥
tvamastravicchastravidāṃ variṣṭhaḥ
surāsurāṇāmapi ṡōkadātā ।
surēṣu sēndrēṣu ca dṛṣṭakarmā
pitāmahārādhanasañcitāstraḥ ॥
You are well-versed with the use of Astras.
You are the foremost of those who wield weapons.
You have given grief even to Suras and Asuras.
Even Suras and Indra had witnessed your exploits.
You accumulated many Astras, worshipping the Grandsire.

sasurāḥ samarudgaṇāḥ ।
na ṡēkussamarē sthātum
surēṡvarasamāṡritāḥ ॥
No one in the court of the lord of Suras,
even along with all the Suras
and the hosts of the Maruts,
could stand against you in battle,
on tasting the power of your Astras.

த்வமேவ மதிஸத்தம: ॥
na kaṡcittriṣu lōkēṣu
saṃyugē na gataṡramaḥ ।
bhujavīryābhiguptaṡca
tapasā cābhirakṣitaḥ ।
dēṡakālavibhāgajñaḥ
tvamēva matisattamaḥ ॥
There is no one in the three worlds
who was not worn out (by you) in battle.
You are a mastermind who can gauge any situation,
having your own doughty arm for armor
and your own Tapa for a shield.

ந வேத யஸ்தேऽஸ்த்ரபலம் பலம் ச தே ॥
na tē'styaṡakyaṃ samarēṣu karmaṇā
na tē'styakāryaṃ matipūrvamantraṇē ।
na sō'sti kaṡcittriṣu saṅgrahēṣu vai
na vēda yastē'strabalaṃ balaṃ ca tē ॥
There is nothing in the matters of warfare
that can be a challenge for your abilities.
For that matter, there is nothing
that you cannot accomplish when you
think through and lay out a strategy.
There is no one in the three worlds
who do not know your strength
or the power of your Astras.

மமாநுரூபம் தபஸோ பலம் ச தே
பராக்ரமஸ்சாஸ்த்ரபலம் ச ஸம்யுகே ।

மநஸ்ஸ்ரமம் கச்சதி நிஸ்சிதார்தம் ॥
mamānurūpaṃ tapasō balaṃ ca tē
parākramaṡcāstrabalaṃ ca saṃyugē ।
na tvāṃ samāsādya raṇāvamardē
manaṡṡramaṃ gacchati niṡcitārtham ॥
In strength and Tapa, you are an equal to me,
and so are you in your prowess and
in the power of Astras in battle.
My mind is freed from stress,
assured that the mission will be accomplished,
when you are in charge in the fray.

நிஹதா: கிங்கராஸ்ஸர்வே

பலாநி ஸுஸம்ருத்தாநி
ஸாஸ்வநாகரதாநி ச ॥
nihatāḥ kiṅkarāssarvē
jambumālī ca rākṣasaḥ ।
amātyaputrā vīrāṡca
pañca sēnāgrayāyinaḥ ।
balāni susamṛddhāni
sāṡvanāgarathāni ca ॥
All the Kiṅkaras have been killed,
so too the Rākshasa Jambumāli,
the valorous sons of ministers and
the five army chiefs, and the splendidly
equipped armies with the full complement
of cavalry, elephantry and chariotry.

kumārō'kṣaṡca sūditaḥ ।
na hi tēṣvēva mē sārō
yastvayyariniṣūdana ॥
Your beloved brother, the young Aksha,
also has been killed.
O destroyer of the foe,
I did not have as much confidence in
any one of them, as I have in you!

குருஷ்வ வேகம் ஸ்வபலாநுரூபம் ॥
idaṃ hi dṛṣṭvā matimanmahadbalaṃ
kapēḥ prabhāvaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca ।
tvamātmanaṡcāpi samīkṣya sāraṃ
kuruṣva vēgaṃ svabalānurūpam ॥
Keeping in mind the power and prowess of the Vānara
and also your own grit, O astute one,
attack with your full strength!

பலாவமர்தஸ்வயி ஸம்நிக்ருஷ்டே
யதா கதே ஸாம்யதி ஸாந்தஸத்ரௌ ।

ஸமாரபஸ்வாஸ்த்ரவிதாம் வரிஷ்ட ॥
balāvamardasvayi saṃnikṛṣṭē
yathā gatē ṡāmyati ṡāntaṡatrau ।
tathā samīkṣyātmabalaṃ paraṃ ca
samārabhasvāstravidāṃ variṣṭha ॥
Your involvement (in the fight) should
reduce the clamor of battlefield to quietude
with the enemy subdued and gone;
and so shall you, O best among the savants of Astras,
plan your attack, with the full awareness of
your own strength and that of the enemy as well!

ந வீரஸேநா கணஸோச்யவந்தி
ந வஜ்ரமாதாய விஸாலஸாரம் ।

na vīrasēnā gaṇaṡōcyavanti
na vajramādāya viṡālasāram ।
na mārutasyāsya gatēḥ pramāṇaṃ
na cāgnikalpaḥ karaṇēna hantum ॥
O Veera! He, who had caused so much of
grief to the hordes (of Rākshasas),
cannot be won by deploying an army
and not even by wielding Vajra of immense power.
He is like fire, and wind is no match for him;
he cannot be killed by the use of hands or fists.

தமேவமர்தம் ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய ஸம்யக்

வ்ரஜாக்ஷதம் கர்ம ஸமாரபஸ்வ ॥
tamēvamarthaṃ prasamīkṣya samyak
svakarmasāmyāddhi samāhitātmā ।
smaraṃṡca divyaṃ dhanuṣō'stravīryaṃ
vrajākṣataṃ karma samārabhasva ॥
Carefully consider things as they are.
Keeping your mind steady and
considering this as your own task and
banking on the power of the divine
Astras that emerge from your bow,
please go forth on your endeavor,
with nothing coming in your way.

na khalviyaṃ matiṡṡrēṣṭhā
yattvāṃ samprēṣayāmyaham ।
iyaṃ ca rājadharmāṇām
kṣatriyasya matirmatā ॥
Sending you like this may not be the best option,
but this is what a Kshatriya is supposed to do
in discharging the responsibilities of a kingdom.

vaiṡāradyamarindama ।
avaṡyamēva bōddhavyam
kāmyaṡca vijayō raṇē ॥
O subduer of foe, one (A Kshatriya)
must acquire expertise in the
use of every kind of weapon in fight
wishing for nothing but victory in battle.

தத: பிதுஸ்தத்வசநம் நிஸம்ய

tataḥ pitustadvacanaṃ niṡamya
pradakṣiṇaṃ dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ ।
cakāra bhartāramadīnasattvō
raṇāya vīraḥ pratipannabuddhiḥ ॥
Hearing those words of his father,
the Veera, powerful like the son of Daksha,
circumambulated that lord in reverence
and resolved in his mind to go for
the fight, with his spirit riding high.

His own people who were dear to him extolling him,
Indrajit went forth to the battle,
irrepressibly eager for the fray.

rākṣasādhipatēssutaḥ ।
nirjagāma mahātējāḥ
samudra iva parvasu ॥
The extremely powerful and richly endowed
son of the lord of Rākshasas,
whose eyes were like lotus petals,
went forth, swelling like the ocean on a full-moon day.

sa pakṣirājōpamatulyavēgaiḥ
vyālaiṡcaturbhiḥ sitatīkṣaṇadaṃṣṭraiḥ ।
rathaṃ samāyuktamasahayavēgam
samārurōhēndrajidindrakalpaḥ ॥
Indrajit, who was like Indra, got into a
chariot whose speed nothing could check
and to which were yoked four fierce beasts
with sharp white fangs, all of which
were as fast as the king of birds.

That charioter, who was foremost among bowmen,
well-versed in the use of weapons and
best among the experts in Astras,
left immediately on his chariot
to the place where Hanumān was.

sa tasya rathanirghōṣam
jyāsvanaṃ kārmukasya ca ।
niṡamya harivīrō'sau
saṃprahṛṣṭatarō'bhavat ॥
The heroic Vānara was only delighted
to hear the rumbling of his chariot and
the twanging of his bowstring.

hanumantamabhiprētya
jagāma raṇapaṇḍitaḥ ॥
Taking a great bow and sharp-tipped arrows,
the veteran warrior went towards Hanumān.

sahōdarastē dayitaḥ
kumārō'kṣaṡca sūditaḥ ।
na hi tēṣvēva mē sārō
yastvayyariniṣūdana ॥
Your beloved brother, the young Aksha,
also has been killed.
O destroyer of the foe,
I did not have as much confidence in
any one of them, as I have in you!

குருஷ்வ வேகம் ஸ்வபலாநுரூபம் ॥
idaṃ hi dṛṣṭvā matimanmahadbalaṃ
kapēḥ prabhāvaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca ।
tvamātmanaṡcāpi samīkṣya sāraṃ
kuruṣva vēgaṃ svabalānurūpam ॥
Keeping in mind the power and prowess of the Vānara
and also your own grit, O astute one,
attack with your full strength!

பலாவமர்தஸ்வயி ஸம்நிக்ருஷ்டே
யதா கதே ஸாம்யதி ஸாந்தஸத்ரௌ ।

ஸமாரபஸ்வாஸ்த்ரவிதாம் வரிஷ்ட ॥
balāvamardasvayi saṃnikṛṣṭē
yathā gatē ṡāmyati ṡāntaṡatrau ।
tathā samīkṣyātmabalaṃ paraṃ ca
samārabhasvāstravidāṃ variṣṭha ॥
Your involvement (in the fight) should
reduce the clamor of battlefield to quietude
with the enemy subdued and gone;
and so shall you, O best among the savants of Astras,
plan your attack, with the full awareness of
your own strength and that of the enemy as well!

ந வீரஸேநா கணஸோச்யவந்தி
ந வஜ்ரமாதாய விஸாலஸாரம் ।
ந மாருதஸ்யாஸ்ய கதே: ப்ரமாணம்
ந சாக்நிகல்ப: கரணேந ஹந்தும் ॥
na vīrasēnā gaṇaṡōcyavanti
na vajramādāya viṡālasāram ।
na mārutasyāsya gatēḥ pramāṇaṃ
na cāgnikalpaḥ karaṇēna hantum ॥
O Veera! He, who had caused so much of
grief to the hordes (of Rākshasas),
cannot be won by deploying an army
and not even by wielding Vajra of immense power.
He is like fire, and wind is no match for him;
he cannot be killed by the use of hands or fists.

தமேவமர்தம் ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய ஸம்யக்
ஸ்வகர்மஸாம்யாத்தி ஸமாஹிதாத்மா ।
ஸ்மரம்ஸ்ச திவ்யம் தநுஷோऽஸ்த்ரவீர்யம்
வ்ரஜாக்ஷதம் கர்ம ஸமாரபஸ்வ ॥
tamēvamarthaṃ prasamīkṣya samyak
svakarmasāmyāddhi samāhitātmā ।
smaraṃṡca divyaṃ dhanuṣō'stravīryaṃ
vrajākṣataṃ karma samārabhasva ॥
Carefully consider things as they are.
Keeping your mind steady and
considering this as your own task and
banking on the power of the divine
Astras that emerge from your bow,
please go forth on your endeavor,
with nothing coming in your way.

na khalviyaṃ matiṡṡrēṣṭhā
yattvāṃ samprēṣayāmyaham ।
iyaṃ ca rājadharmāṇām
kṣatriyasya matirmatā ॥
Sending you like this may not be the best option,
but this is what a Kshatriya is supposed to do
in discharging the responsibilities of a kingdom.

வைஸாரத்யமரிந்தம ।

nānāṡastrēṣu saṅgrāmē
vaiṡāradyamarindama ।
avaṡyamēva bōddhavyam
kāmyaṡca vijayō raṇē ॥
O subduer of foe, one (A Kshatriya)
must acquire expertise in the
use of every kind of weapon in fight
wishing for nothing but victory in battle.

தத: பிதுஸ்தத்வசநம் நிஸம்ய
ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் தக்ஷஸுதப்ரபாவ: ।

ரணாய வீர: ப்ரதிபந்நபுத்தி: ॥
tataḥ pitustadvacanaṃ niṡamya
pradakṣiṇaṃ dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ ।
cakāra bhartāramadīnasattvō
raṇāya vīraḥ pratipannabuddhiḥ ॥
Hearing those words of his father,
the Veera, powerful like the son of Daksha,
circumambulated that lord in reverence
and resolved in his mind to go for
the fight, with his spirit riding high.

ததஸ்தைஸ்ஸ்வகணைரிஷ்டை:
இந்த்ரஜித் ப்ரதிபூஜித: ।

ஸங்க்ராமம் ப்ரத்யபத்யத ॥
tatastaissvagaṇairiṣṭaiḥ
indrajit pratipūjitaḥ ।
yuddhōddhataḥ kṛtōtsāhaḥ
saṅgrāmaṃ pratyapadyata ॥
His own people who were dear to him extolling him,
Indrajit went forth to the battle,
irrepressibly eager for the fray.

ராக்ஷஸாதிபதேஸ்ஸுத: ।

ṡrīmānpadmapalāṡākṣō
rākṣasādhipatēssutaḥ ।
nirjagāma mahātējāḥ
samudra iva parvasu ॥
The extremely powerful and richly endowed
son of the lord of Rākshasas,
whose eyes were like lotus petals,
went forth, swelling like the ocean on a full-moon day.

ஸ பக்ஷிராஜோபமதுல்யவேகை:
வ்யாலைஸ்சதுர்பி: ஸிததீக்ஷணதம்ஷ்ட்ரை: ।

ஸமாருரோஹேந்த்ரஜிதிந்த்ரகல்ப: ॥
sa pakṣirājōpamatulyavēgaiḥ
vyālaiṡcaturbhiḥ sitatīkṣaṇadaṃṣṭraiḥ ।
rathaṃ samāyuktamasahayavēgam
samārurōhēndrajidindrakalpaḥ ॥
Indrajit, who was like Indra, got into a
chariot whose speed nothing could check
and to which were yoked four fierce beasts
with sharp white fangs, all of which
were as fast as the king of birds.

ஸ ரதீ தந்விநாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்ட:
ஸஸ்த்ரஜ்ஞோஸ்த்ரவிதாம் வர: ।

ஹநுமாந்யத்ர ஸோऽபவத் ॥
sa rathī dhanvināṃ ṡrēṣṭhaḥ
ṡastrajñōstravidāṃ varaḥ ।
rathēnābhiyayau kṣipram
hanumānyatra sō'bhavat ॥
That charioter, who was foremost among bowmen,
well-versed in the use of weapons and
best among the experts in Astras,
left immediately on his chariot
to the place where Hanumān was.

ஸ தஸ்ய ரதநிர்கோஷம்
ஜ்யாஸ்வநம் கார்முகஸ்ய ச ।
நிஸம்ய ஹரிவீரோऽஸௌ
ஸம்ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டதரோऽபவத் ॥
sa tasya rathanirghōṣam
jyāsvanaṃ kārmukasya ca ।
niṡamya harivīrō'sau
saṃprahṛṣṭatarō'bhavat ॥
The heroic Vānara was only delighted
to hear the rumbling of his chariot and
the twanging of his bowstring.

ஸுமஹச்சாபமாதாய
ஸிதஸல்யாம்ஸ்ச ஸாயகாந் ।
ஹநுமந்தமபிப்ரேத்ய

sumahaccāpamādāya
ṡitaṡalyāṃṡca sāyakān ।
hanumantamabhiprētya
jagāma raṇapaṇḍitaḥ ॥
Taking a great bow and sharp-tipped arrows,
the veteran warrior went towards Hanumān.
