Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 49
In this Sarga, Hanumān is struck by awe seeing the power, charm, majesty and opulence of the king of Rākshasas. He feels that that king could have become the ruler of the world of Dēvas itself, if only he had not been given to the path of Adharma.

Hanumān of formidable prowess, looked,
his eyes turning copper-red with anger,
at the King of the Rākshasas,
astonished at his exploits.

(He saw him) shining with extraordinary brilliance
wearing a priceless, dazzling golden crown
that was wrapped in a lacework of pearls.

mahārhamaṇivigrahaiḥ ।
haimairābharaṇaiṡcitraiḥ
manasēva prakalpitaiḥ ॥
The variety of gold ornaments on him
that were studded with clusters of diamonds
and priceless jewels were so perfect,
that they seemed to be imagination
that had taken shape (in a perfect manner).

raktacandanarūṣitam ।
svānuliptaṃ vicitrābhiḥ
vividhābhiṡca bhaktibhiḥ ॥
He was clad in silks that only the opulent deserve,
and his body was smeared with red sandal paste
on which were traced various interesting patterns.

pralambadaṡanacchadaiḥ ।
ṡirōbhirdaṡabhirvīram
bhrājamānaṃ mahaujasam ।
nānāvyālasamākīrṇaiḥ
ṡikharairiva mandaram ॥
That Veera of immense power
shone with his ten heads,
their blood-red eyes frightening,
big sharp teeth gleaming,
and their lips pouting,
fascinating the beholder
like Mandara, with its peaks
crowded with various beasts, does.

sabalākamivāmbudam ॥
With his face bright like the moon,
his body resembling a mound of black collyrium,
his chest shining with gem strings,
he looked like a (black) raincloud
with (white) cranes flying against it.

like five-hooded serpents,
smeared with rare sandal and with
Aṅgadas and shoulder-rings tied to them.

big, splendid and attractive throne
made of crystal and studded with diamonds
that was covered with superb spreads.

சதுர்பிரிவ ஸாகரை: ॥

mahāpārṡvēna rakṣasā ।
mantribhirmantratattvajñaiḥ
nikumbhēna ca mantriṇā ।
sukhōpaviṣṭaṃ rakṣōbhiḥ
caturbhirbaladarpitaiḥ ।
kṛtsnaṃ parivṛtaṃ lōkam
caturbhiriva sāgaraiḥ ॥
With the four Rākshasas, Durdhara,
Prahasta, Mahāpārṡwa and Nikumbha,
ministers who were savants of strategy,
puffing with pride because of their strength,
sitting happily around him, he looked like
the Earth surrounded by the four oceans.

Attended upon closely by ministers,
strategists and other Rākshasas
endowed with intellect and wisdom,
he was like the lord of the Suras waited upon by Suras.

Hanumān saw the Lord of Rākshasas
whose splendor was limitless and who
looked like a raincloud on the peak of Mount Meru
that had not yet discharged its waters, thus seated.

Even though he was being tormented by
the Rākshasas of terrible prowess,
he could not help being extremely amazed,
looking at that lord of the Rākshasas.

Seeing that dazzling lord of Rākshasas
and stupefied by his radiance,
Hanumān thought to himself:

ahō sattvamahō dyutiḥ ।
ahō rākṣasarājasya
sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā ॥
Ah, what charm, what mettle,
what power and what brilliance!
How well every quality that there is,
is blended in this king of Rākshasas!

yadyadharmō na balavān
syādayaṃ rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
syādayaṃ suralōkasya
saṡakrasyāpi rakṣitā ॥
If only this lord of Rākshasas had not caved in
under the powerful lure of Adharma,
he might as well have become the ruler
of the world of Suras and Ṡakra.

அயம் ஹ்யுத்ஸஹதே க்ருத்த:
கர்துமேகார்ணவம் ஜகத் ॥
asya krūrairnṛṡaṃsaiṡca
karmabhirlōkakutsitaiḥ ।
sarvē bibhyati khalvasmāt
lōkāssāmaradānavāḥ ।
ayaṃ hyutsahatē kruddhaḥ
kartumēkārṇavaṃ jagat ॥
His cruel and unkind acts
are despised by the (entire) world.
All the worlds including those of
Amaras and Dānavas are scared of him.
Roused to wrath, he would even be ready
to reduce the world into one single ocean.

akarōnmatimān hariḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā rākṣasarājasya
prabhāvamamitaujasaḥ ॥
Thus many a thought crossed the mind
of the Vānara when he saw the
power of the king of Rākshasas
and his limitless strength.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஏகோநபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥

அஹோ ராக்ஷஸராஜஸ்ய
ஸர்வலக்ஷணயுக்ததா ॥
ahō rūpamahō dhairyam
ahō sattvamahō dyutiḥ ।
ahō rākṣasarājasya
sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā ॥
Ah, what charm, what mettle,
what power and what brilliance!
How well every quality that there is,
is blended in this king of Rākshasas!

யத்யதர்மோ ந பலவாந்
ஸ்யாதயம் ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ।
ஸ்யாதயம் ஸுரலோகஸ்ய
ஸஸக்ரஸ்யாபி ரக்ஷிதா ॥
yadyadharmō na balavān
syādayaṃ rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
syādayaṃ suralōkasya
saṡakrasyāpi rakṣitā ॥
If only this lord of Rākshasas had not caved in
under the powerful lure of Adharma,
he might as well have become the ruler
of the world of Suras and Ṡakra.

அஸ்ய க்ரூரைர்ந்ருஸம்ஸைஸ்ச
கர்மபிர்லோககுத்ஸிதை: ।
ஸர்வே பிப்யதி கல்வஸ்மாத்
லோகாஸ்ஸாமரதாநவா: ।
அயம் ஹ்யுத்ஸஹதே க்ருத்த:
கர்துமேகார்ணவம் ஜகத் ॥
asya krūrairnṛṡaṃsaiṡca
karmabhirlōkakutsitaiḥ ।
sarvē bibhyati khalvasmāt
lōkāssāmaradānavāḥ ।
ayaṃ hyutsahatē kruddhaḥ
kartumēkārṇavaṃ jagat ॥
His cruel and unkind acts
are despised by the (entire) world.
All the worlds including those of
Amaras and Dānavas are scared of him.
Roused to wrath, he would even be ready
to reduce the world into one single ocean.

இதி சிந்தாம் பஹுவிதாம்
அகரோந்மதிமாந் ஹரி: ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ராக்ஷஸராஜஸ்ய
ப்ரபாவமமிதௌஜஸ: ॥
iti cintāṃ bahuvidhām
akarōnmatimān hariḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā rākṣasarājasya
prabhāvamamitaujasaḥ ॥
Thus many a thought crossed the mind
of the Vānara when he saw the
power of the king of Rākshasas
and his limitless strength.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஏகோநபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē ēkōnapañcāṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the forty ninth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
