Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 50
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa prods his chief minister Prahasta to ask Hanumān as to who he is and why he has come to Laṅkā. Prahasta asks Hanumān whether he was sent by Indra, Yama, Varuṇa, Kubēra or Vishṇu. He reassures Hanumān that there is nothing for him to fear if he tells the truth, failing which he shall not hope to be left alive. Hanumān tells that he was sent by none of those, but by Rāma.

ṡaṅkāhṛtātmā dadhyau sa
kapīndraṃ tējasāvṛtam ॥
As he looked at the yellow-eyed one
who stood in front of him,
Rāvaṇa of mighty arm,
who made the worlds wail, became furious.
With many a question crowding his mind,
he thought about that foremost
of the Vānaras who exuded power:

bhavētsākṣādihāgataḥ ।
yēna ṡaptō'smi kailāsē
mayā sańcālitē purā ।
sō'yaṃ vānaramūrtissyāt
kiṃsvidbāṇō mahā'suraḥ ॥
Could this be the Bhagawān Nandi Himself
by whom I was cursed in the far past
when he was shaken by me?
Or could this be Bāṇa, the great Asura,
who has come here taking the form of a Vānara?
This Ṡlōka refers to the episode of Rāvaṇa lifting Mount Kailāsa, shaking everything on it including Bhagawān Nandi.

and why he destroyed the Vana
and threatened the Rākshasis!

Ask the rogue the reasons for
his coming to my impregnable city and
for what purpose he provoked the fight!

பயம் வாநர மோக்ஷ்யஸே ॥
samāṡvasihi bhadraṃ tē

yadi tāvattvamindrēṇa
prēṣitō rāvaṇālayam ।
tattvamākhyāhi mā bhūttē
bhayaṃ vānara mōkṣyasē ॥
O Vānara! Be relaxed. Feel safe.
You need not entertain any fear.
Were you sent by Indra to this abode of Rāvaṇa?
If so, please tell in detail, why so.
O Vānara! You have nothing at all
to fear; you shall be set free.

Or were you sent by Vaiṡravaṇa or Yama or Varuṇa,
or by Vishṇu who is eager for victory?
Did you enter this city of ours as their spy?

This power (that you displayed)
is certainly not that of a mere Vānara;
you seem to be a Vānara only in appearance.
Tell us now everything as it is
and, O Vānara, you shall be freed!

dhanadēna na mē sakhyam

jātirēva mama tvēṣā
vānarō'hamihāgataḥ ॥
Thus questioned, that eminent Vānara
said to the lord of the Rākshasas,
‘I belong neither to Ṡakra,
nor to Yama nor to Varuṇa;
nor am I a friend of the financier (Kubēra);
nor was I sent by Vishṇu.
I came here only as a Vānara, which I am by birth’

Gaining admittance to the presence
of the lord of Rākshasas is not easy;
hence, intending to meet the king of Rākshasas,
I destroyed (the Vana).

Thereupon came those strong Rākshasas, wanting to fight.
And I had to fight back in the battle, to protect my person.

samprāptō'smi tavāntikam ॥
I let myself to be bound by the Astra,
because I wanted to see the King.
The moment the Rākshasas hurt me (capturing),
I became free from the bond of the Astra.
I came here to your presence on
certain business of state.

Let me introduce myself as the
messenger of Rāghava of limitless puissance.
I hope, O lord, these words of mine
that are meant only for your good, will be heard:
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē

ராஜாநம் த்ரஷ்டுகாமேந
மயாஸ்த்ரமநுவர்திதம் ।
விமுக்தோ ஹ்யஹமஸ்த்ரேண
ராக்ஷஸைஸ்த்வபிபீடித: ।
கேநசித்ராஜகார்யேண
ஸம்ப்ராப்தோऽஸ்மி தவாந்திகம் ॥
rājānaṃ draṣṭukāmēna
mayāstramanuvartitam ।
vimuktō hyahamastrēṇa
rākṣasaistvabhipīḍitaḥ ।
kēnacidrājakāryēṇa
samprāptō'smi tavāntikam ॥
I let myself to be bound by the Astra,
because I wanted to see the King.
The moment the Rākshasas hurt me (capturing),
I became free from the bond of the Astra.
I came here to your presence on
certain business of state.

தூதோऽஹமிதி விஜ்ஞேயோ
ராகவஸ்யாமிதௌஜஸ: ।
ஸ்ரூயதாம் சாபி வசநம்
மம பத்யமிதம் ப்ரபோ ॥
dūtō'hamiti vijńēyō
rāghavasyāmitaujasaḥ ।
ṡrūyatāṃ cāpi vacanam
mama pathyamidaṃ prabhō ॥
Let me introduce myself as the
messenger of Rāghava of limitless puissance.
I hope, O lord, these words of mine
that are meant only for your good, will be heard:
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē pańcāṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the fiftieth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
