வைரூப்யமங்கேஷு கஸாபிகாதோ
மௌண்ட்யம் ததா லக்ஷணஸம்நிபாத: ।
ஏதாந் ஹி தூதே ப்ரவதந்தி தண்டாந்
வதஸ்து தூதஸ்ய ந ந: ஸ்ருதோऽஸ்தி ॥
vairūpyamaṅgēṣu kaṡābhighātō
mauṇḍyaṃ tathā lakṣaṇasaṃnipātaḥ ।
ētān hi dūtē pravadanti daṇḍān
vadhastu dūtasya na naḥ ṡrutō'sti ॥
Disfiguring a limb, flogging, shaving off the head,
or stamping a mark of ignominy (on the body)
are mentioned as appropriate punishment for an envoy;
but never do we hear of capital punishment.

கதம் ச தர்மார்தவிநீதபுத்தி:

kathaṃ ca dharmārthavinītabuddhiḥ
parāvarapratyayaniṡcitārthaḥ ।
bhavadvidhaḥ kōpavaṡē hi tiṣṭhēt
kōpaṃ niyacchanti hi sattvavantaḥ ॥
How can one like you, who has been
instructed in the principles of Dharma and Artha,
who can clearly gauge the pros and cons,
come under the control of anger?
For men of strong minds restrain their temper.

na dharmavādē na ca lōkavṛttē
na ṡāstrabuddhigrahaṇēṣu cāpi ।
vidyēta kaṡcittava vīra tulyaḥ
tvaṃhyuttamassarvasurāsurāṇām ॥
No one is known, O Veera, to be an equal to you
in articulating Dharma or
in managing the affairs of this world,
or in grasping the essence of Ṡāstras
or reading the minds (of others)!
You are the best among all the Suras and Asuras.

ṡūrēṇa vīrēṇa niṡācarēndra
surāsurāṇāmapi durjayēna ।
tvayā pragalbhāḥ suradaityasaṅghā
jitāṡca yuddhēṣvasakṛnnarēndrāḥ ॥
O lord of night-rovers! You are a Veera and a Ṡūra,
unassailable even by the Suras and Asuras!
Hosts of mighty Suras and Daityas, and kings
were vanquished by you in battles, many a time!

kañcitpaṡyāmyahaṃ guṇam ।
tēṣvayaṃ pātyatāṃ daṇḍō
yairayaṃ prēṣitaḥ kapiḥ ॥
I do not see any merit in killing this Vānara.
Let the punishment fall on those who have sent him.

bruvan parārthaṃ paravān
na dūtō vadhamarhati ॥
No matter whether he is good or bad,
he has been sent by the enemy
and he is operating under the control of others.
An envoy, who speaks on behalf of
someone else, should not be killed.

nānyaṃ paṡyāmi khēcaram ।
iha yaḥ punarāgacchēt
paraṃ pāraṃ mahōdadhēḥ ॥
Moreover, if he is slain, O king,
I do not see any other sky-bound creature
that can come here again,
to this farther shore of the mighty ocean.

kāryaḥ parapurañjaya ।
bhavān sēndrēṣu dēvēṣu
yatnamāsthātumarhati ॥
Hence, O vanquisher of enemy cities,
the efforts should not be
directed towards killing him.
You should, rather, put your efforts
on (vanquishing) the Dēvas along with Indra.

If he is slain, O lover of a fight,
I do not see any other Veera,
who can incite those impudent princes for a fight,
which the prospect of a long journey might prevent.

parākramōtsāhamanasvināṃ ca
surāsurāṇāmapi durjayēna ।
tvayā manōnandana naitānāṃ
yuddhāyatirnāṡayatuṃ na yuktā ॥
O delight of the Rākshasas!
You should not ruin the prospect
of a fight that is already on its way;
even the Suras and Asuras
of prowess, enterprise and grit
cannot vanquish you in a fight!

கோட்யக்ரதஸ்தே ஸுப்ருதாஸ்ச யோதா: ॥
hitāṡca ṡūrāṡca samāhitāṡca
kulēṣu jātāṡca mahāguṇēṣu ।
manasvinaṡṡastrabhṛtāṃ variṣṭhāḥ
kōṭyagratastē subhṛtāṡca yōdhāḥ ॥
You have more than a crore well-paid Ṡūras
of great grit and composure,
who are born into the lineages of great merit
and are the best among the wielders of weapons.

ததேகதேஸேந பலஸ்ய தாவத்
கேசித்தவாऽऽதேஸக்ருதோऽபியாந்து ।

tadēkadēṡēna balasya tāvat
kēcittavā''dēṡakṛtō'bhiyāntu ।
tau rājaputrau vinigṛhya mūḍhau
parēṣu tē bhāvayituṃ prabhāvam ॥
Let a few commanders, who are
zealous of following your instructions,
go forth with a fraction of that army
to capture those stupid princes, exhibiting
the dash of your prowess over the enemy.

niṡācarāṇāmadhipō'nujasya
vibhīṣaṇasyōttamavākyamiṣṭam ।
jagrāha buddhyā suralōkaṡatruḥ
mahābalō rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ ॥
The paramount Ruler of night-rovers,
mighty strong foe of the world of Suras
and chief among the kings of Rākshasas
paid heed to that best and pleasing
advice of his younger brother Vibheeshaṇa.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்விபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē dvipañcāṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the fifty second Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
