anvīyamānō rakṣōbhiḥ
yayau sukhamarindamaḥ ।
hanumāṃṡcārayāmāsa
rākṣasānāṃ mahāpurīm ॥
Hanumān, thus went around
that great city of Rākshasas happily,
with an entourage of Rākshasas following him.

The great Vānara then saw a variety of towers,
covered enclosures at the ground level,
and well laid road junctions.

ததர்ஸ பவநாத்மஜ: ॥

kapiṡṡṛṅgāṭakāni ca ।
tathā rathyōparathyāṡca
tathaiva gṛhakāntarān ।
gṛhāṃṡca mēghasaṅkāṡān
dadarṡa pavanātmajaḥ ॥
The Vānara, son of Vāyu,
saw highways, byways, street-crossings,
streets crowded with houses,
narrow houses and houses huge like clouds.

rājamārgē tathaiva ca ।
ghōṣayanti kapiṃ sarvē
cārīka iti rākṣasāḥ ॥
At the crossroads, at the four-pillared domes,
and along the royal pathways,
the Rākshasas proclaimed that
the Vānara was a spy.

taṃ pradīpitalāṅgūlam
hanumantaṃ didṛkṣavaḥ ॥
Women, children and old people came out here and there
curious to see Hanumān and his burning tail.

dīpyamānē tatastatra
lāṅgūlāgrē hanūmataḥ ।
rākṣasyastā virūpākṣyaḥ
ṡaṃsurdēvyāstadapriyam ॥
When the tip of Hanumān’s tail was set ablaze,
Rākshasis of crooked eyes carried
the unpleasant news to the Dēvi (Seetā).

sītē tāmramukhaḥ kapiḥ ।
lāṅgūlēna pradīptēna
sa ēṣa pariṇīyatē ॥
O Seetā! The copper-red faced Vānara
who made conversation with you,
is being paraded, with his tail set ablaze.

ஆத்மாபஹரணோபமம் ।
வைதேஹீ ஸோகஸந்தப்தா

ṡrutvā tadvacanaṃ krūram
ātmāpaharaṇōpamam ।
vaidēhī ṡōkasantaptā
hutāṡanamupāgamat ॥
Hearing that news which, she felt it to be
as terrible as that of her own abduction
Vaidēhi was burnt with grief
and approached (the god of) fire.

மங்கலாபிமுகீ தஸ்ய
ஸா ததாऽஸீந்மஹாகபே: ।
உபதஸ்தே விஸாலாக்ஷீ

maṅgalābhimukhī tasya
sā tadā'sīnmahākapēḥ ।
upatasthē viṡālākṣī
prayatā havyavāhanam ॥
Wishing for the safety and wellbeing
of that great Vānara, she sat (facing the fire).
She of wide eyes, wholeheartedly
prayed to that carrier of Havya.

யத்யஸ்தி பதிஸுஸ்ரூஷா
யத்யஸ்தி சரிதம் தப: ।
யதி சாஸ்த்யேகபத்நீத்வம்

yadyasti patiṡuṡrūṣā
yadyasti caritaṃ tapaḥ ।
yadi cāstyēkapatnītvam
ṡītō bhava hanūmataḥ ॥
If I have served my husband faithfully,
practiced Tapa and been absolutely loyal to him,
may your touch be cool to Hanumān.

தஸ்ய மய்யஸ்தி தீமத: ।
யதி வா பாக்யஸேஷோ மே

tasya mayyasti dhīmataḥ ।
yadi vā bhāgyaṡēṣō mē
ṡītō bhava hanūmataḥ ॥
If he (Rāma), the sagacious one
has any compassion for me,
and I have any remnants of luck left,
may your touch be cool for Hanumān.

tatsamāgamalālasām ।
sa vijānāti dharmātmā
ṡītō bhava hanūmataḥ ॥
If that Dharmātma counts me as
one with chaste character
yearning to be united with him,
may your touch be cool for Hanumān.

sugrīvaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ।
asmāddhuḥkhāmbusaṃrōdhāt
ṡītō bhava hanūmataḥ ॥
If the noble Sugreeva who is true to his word,
is going to get me over to the
other end of the sea of sorrow
in which I am caught,
may your touch be cool for Hanumān.
