sākṣādyamō vā varuṇō'nilō vā ।
rudrō'gnirarkō dhanadaṡca sōmō
na vānarō'yaṃ svayamēva kālaḥ ॥
He is not a mere Vānara; he could be
Mahendra, the lord of Dēvas who wields the Vajra
or Yama himself, or Varuṇa or Vāyu or
Rudra, or Agni or the sun, or the Financier
or the moon or Time itself.

hordes of Rākshasas, gathering with everyone
and watching that city burnt in a flash
along with its creatures, houses and trees.

Consumed completely and so quickly by the fire,
along with its Rākshasas,
horses, elephants, chariots, and the
flock of birds and droves of beasts,
Laṅkā wept piteously, filled with tumultuous cries.

rakṣōbhirēvaṃ bahudhā bruvadbhiḥ
ṡabdaḥ kṛtō ghōratarassubhīmaḥ ॥
The Rākshasas uttered many a word like,
‘Alas, my father, my darling boy!
Alas, my beloved, my friend!
Alas, the luxurious life, the fruit of
good deeds, that has vanished!’,
making eerie and frightful sounds.

her mighty warriors slain
and her army on the run and
struck by the powerful wrath of Hanumān,
Laṅkā seemed to be hit by the spell of a curse.

Hanumān, of steady mind, saw that Laṅkā,
that looked like the earth
devastated by the wrath of the Self-Create,
every part of it marked by the blazing fire,
and its Rākshasas panicking,
gripped with fear and despair.

Hanumān, the Vānara, the son of Vāyu,
stood aside after thus destroying
the Vana that was filled with excellent trees,
killing the great Rākshasas in the fight and
burning the city and all its rows of houses.

That kingly lion among the Vānaras,
his tail still in flames and glowing,
looked like the sun casting his rays
from the top of the mesmerizing
crest of Trikūṭa mountain.

After thus killing many Rākshasas,
destroying the Vana of many trees,
and depositing fire on the houses of Rākshasas,
the thoughts of that Mahatma went to Rāma.

the sagacious mighty strong
chief among Vānara Warriors,
whose speed was a match for that of Vāyu.

Siddhas and the great Ṛshis
were delighted to see
Laṅkā thus burnt completely.

the great and foremost of the Vānaras,
thinking that he must be the
conflagration that would end the world.

Dēvas, great Munis, Gandharvas,
Vidyādharas, Nāgas and Yakshas
and all the mighty beings there,
were filled with delight that had no comparison.

தத்ர தேவாஸ்ஸகந்தர்வா:
ஸித்தாஸ்ச பரமர்ஷய: ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா லங்காம் ப்ரதக்தாம் தாம்
விஸ்மயம் பரமம் கதா: ॥
tatra dēvāssagandharvāḥ
siddhāṡca paramarṣayaḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā laṅkāṃ pradagdhāṃ tām
vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ ॥
The Dēvas, along with Gandharvas,
Siddhas and the great Ṛshis
were delighted to see
Laṅkā thus burnt completely.

தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா வாநரஸ்ரேஷ்டம்
ஹநுமந்தம் மஹாகபிம் ।
காலாக்நிரிதி ஸஞ்சிந்த்ய
ஸர்வபூதாநி தத்ரஸு: ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vānaraṡrēṣṭham
hanumantaṃ mahākapim ।
kālāgniriti sańcintya
sarvabhūtāni tatrasuḥ ॥
All creatures trembled with fear
as they looked at Hanumān,
the great and foremost of the Vānaras,
thinking that he must be the
conflagration that would end the world.

தேவாஸ்ச ஸர்வே முநிபுங்கவாஸ்ச
கந்தர்வவித்யாதரநாகயக்ஷா: ।
பூதாநி ஸர்வாணி மஹாந்தி தத்ர
ஜக்மு: பராம் ப்ரீதிமதுல்யரூபாம் ॥
dēvāṡca sarvē munipuṅgavāṡca
gandharvavidyādharanāgayakṣāḥ ।
bhūtāni sarvāṇi mahānti tatra
jagmuḥ parāṃ prītimatulyarūpām ॥
Dēvas, great Munis, Gandharvas,
Vidyādharas, Nāgas and Yakshas
and all the mighty beings there,
were filled with delight that had no comparison.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே சது:பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē catuḥpańcāṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the fifty fourth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
