ikṣvākuvaṃṡē dharmiṣṭhē
gatē nāṡamasaṃṡayam ।
bhaviṣyanti prajāssarvāḥ
ṡōkasantāpapīḍitāḥ ॥
With the lineage of the Ikshwākus
thus perishing, their subjects will all
be harrowed by the agony of grief, for certain.

rōṣadōṣaparītātmā
vyaktaṃ lōkavināṡanaḥ ॥
With good fortune deserting me and
my mind succumbing to anger,
I stand here forfeiting Dharma and Artha
and causing the destruction of the world.

sākṣātpunaracintayat ॥
When he was thus pondering sadly,
there appeared auspicious omens,
such as the ones he had seen before.
Then he thought again:

na naṡiṣyati kalyāṇī
nāgniragnau pravartatē ॥
May be that good dame, whose every limb is lovely,
did not perish, her own power (of Tapa) protecting her,
for fire cannot burn fire!

Fire cannot touch the wife of that
Dharmātma of limitless puissance,
who has her own virtue for an armor.

Did fire, whose nature is to burn,
not leave me, indeed, without a burn,
because of Rāma’s greatness
and Vaidēhi’s good deeds?

rāmasya ca manaḥ kāntā

How could she, who is like a Dēvata
for the three brothers including Bharata,
and who is a darling of Rāma’s heart, perish?

If he, the imperishable Lord
who burns down everything,
would not burn my tail,
why would he burn the noble one?

hiraṇyanābhasya girēḥ
jalamadhyē pradarṡanam ॥
And Hanumān recollected, with renewed wonder,
the mountain of the golden navel (Maināka)
showing itself in the midst of the ocean.

na tāmagniḥ pradhakṣyati ॥
By virtue of her austerities, truthfulness
and wholehearted devotion to her lord,
she can burn the fire itself;
fire, by no means, can burn her.

As Hanumān thus dwelt in his mind
on the immensity of the Dēvi’s virtues,
he heard Cāraṇas, the Mahātmas, saying:

ahō khalu kṛtaṃ karma
duṣkaraṃ hi hanūmatā ।
agniṃ visṛjatā'bhīkṣṇam
bhīmaṃ rākṣasavēṡmani ॥
What an unimaginable task has Hanumān accomplished,
setting all the houses of the Rākshasas
on a terrible and extensive fire!

bālavṛddhasamākulā ।
janakōlāhalādhmātā
krandantīvādrikandaraiḥ ॥
With the Rākshasa women, children and old people
fleeing in panic, and filled with
the uproar of people everywhere,
it (Laṅkā) seems like the wailing of mountain caves.

தக்தேயம் நகரீ ஸர்வா
ஸாட்டப்ராகாரதோரணா ।

sāṭṭaprākāratōraṇā ।
jānakī na ca dagdhēti
vismayō'dbhuta ēva naḥ ॥
It is so surprising to us that
the whole city with all its ramparts,
towers and gateways is burnt, but not Jānaki.

ஸ நிமித்தைஸ்ச த்ருஷ்டார்தை:
காரணைஸ்ச மஹாகுணை: ।

sa nimittaiṡca dṛṣṭārthaiḥ
kāraṇaiṡca mahāguṇaiḥ ।
ṛṣivākyaiṡca hanumān
abhavatprītamānasaḥ ॥
Hanumān was very pleased with
those omens that had always been proved right,
the many and weighty reasons
why it could not have fallen out otherwise
and the words of the sages.

தத: கபி: ப்ராப்தமநோரதார்த:
தாமக்ஷதாம் ராஜஸுதாம் விதித்வா ।

ப்ரதிப்ரயாணாய மதிம் சகார ॥
tataḥ kapiḥ prāptamanōrathārthaḥ
tāmakṣatāṃ rājasutāṃ viditvā ।
pratyakṣatastāṃ punarēva dṛṣṭavā
pratiprayāṇāya matiṃ cakāra ॥
Reaching the goal that he had set in his mind
and hearing that the princess was left unscathed,
the Vānara decided to see her once again
before setting himself off on the return journey.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē pańcapańcāṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the fifty fifth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
