Hanumān, the son of Vāyu, climbed that mountain,
excited at the prospect of seeing Rāma soon.

the mighty Vānara grew in size
on the southern shore, getting ready to go
to the northern shore of those salty waters.

Pressed by the Vānara, the great mountain
and the creatures on it groaned.
With its peaks shaking and its trees falling off,
the mountain sank into the ground.

as if they were struck down by Ṡakra’s weapon.

became crushed in the interiors of the caves
reverberated, rending the sky.

from that mountain, scared,
with their clothes in disorder
and their ornaments jumbled up.

Big, strong and virulently poisonous snakes,
huge in size and with flaming tongues, wriggled,
their heads and necks badly battered.

pīḍitaṃ taṃ nagavaram
tyaktvā gaganamāsthitāḥ ॥
Then, Kinnaras, Uragas, Gandharvas, Yakshas
and Vidyādharas rose into the sky, abandoning
that great mountain which was thus pressed.

That rich mountain, with its trees
and peaks that stood tall,
sank into Rasātala, oppressed by
the pressure of that strong one.

That ten-Yōjana wide and thirty-Yōjana tall
mountain became level with the ground.

salīlaṃ lavaṇārṇavam ।
kallōlāsphālavēlāntam
utpapāta nabhō hariḥ ॥
The Vānara then sprang into the sky in a graceful manner,
to leap over that daunting mass of salty water
whose billows crashed violently on the shore.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஷட்பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
