ஸ வை வித்வம்ஸிதோ மயா ॥
tatō mē buddhirutpannā
caityaprāsādamākramam ।
tatrasthānrākṣasān hatvā
ṡataṃ stambhēna vai punaḥ ।
lalāmabhūtō laṅkāyāḥ
sa vai vidhvaṃsitō mayā ॥
Then I felt like taking over
the lofty house of worship.
Grabbing its pillar, I killed another
one hundred Rākshasas who were there.
That iconic building was then
completely destroyed by me.

Then (he) sent Jambumāli, the son of Prahasta,
along with many frightful Rākshasas of dreadful form.

Then I killed that Rākshasa,
who was quite skilled in fight and
was endowed with great strength,
along with those who followed him.

Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas sent
the sons of ministers of great strength
reinforced by a company of infantry.

pańca sēnāgragācchrūrān
prēṣayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ ॥
I have sent all of them to
the abode of Yama with the same Parigha.
On hearing that the sons of the ministers
who were extremely deft in fight were killed,
Rāvaṇa sent five brave army chiefs.

tataḥ punardaṡagrīvaḥ
putramakṣaṃ mahābalam ।
bahubhī rākṣasaissārdham
prēṣayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ ॥
I have destroyed all of them and their armies.
Again, Rāvaṇa, the Ten-necked one
sent his mighty strong son Aksha
along with many Rākshasas.

ப்ராமயித்வா வ்யபேஷயம் ॥
taṃ tu mandōdarīputtram
kumāraṃ raṇapaṇḍitam ।
sahasā khaṃ samutkrāntam
pādayōṡca gṛhītavān ।
carmāsinaṃ ṡataguṇam
bhrāmayitvā vyapēṣayam ॥
Then that young man, son of Mandōdari,
an expert in fight, leaped into the sky instantly,
armed with a sword and shield.
I grabbed him by the feet and
whirled him a hundred times and killed him.

tata indrajitaṃ nāma

vyādidēṡa susaṃkṛddhō
balinam yuddhadurmadam ॥
On hearing that Aksha was killed in fight,
the Ten-faced Rāvaṇa was outraged and
sent his other son, Indrajit by name,
a strong and ferocious fighter.

to bring the power of that army
and that of the bull among Rākshasas
to naught in that combat.

along with a force which was
swollen with the pride of its strength.

that his forces were completely beaten up,
he quickly bound me with Brahma’s Astra.

and took me to the presence of Rāvaṇa.

looked at me and spoke to me,
asking why I came to Laṅkā and
questioning why I killed the Rākshasas.

Know that I, a Vānara, am the envoy of Rāma
and the minister of Sugreeva.
I came here to your presence
to deliver a message from Rāma.

The immensely powerful Sugreeva sends you his greetings
and a message that is for your good
and that augurs Dharma, Artha as well as Kāma.

Rāghava the doughty warrior became friends with me

that has a dense cover of trees.

he needs every help that I can render him.

வாநராணாம் மஹாராஜ:
க்ருதஸ்ஸ ப்லவதாம் ப்ரபு: ॥
vālinā hṛtarājyēna
sugrīvēṇa mahāprabhuḥ ।
cakrē'gnisākṣikaṃ sakhyam
rāghavassaha lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
tēna vālinamutpāṭya
ṡarēṇaikēna saṃyugē ।
vānarāṇāṃ mahārājaḥ
kṛtassa plavatāṃ prabhuḥ ॥
[With fire for a witness,
that mighty lord Rāghava, along with Lakshmaṇa,
sealed a compact of friendship with Sugreeva,
who had been deprived of his kingdom by Vali.
Then Vāli was killed by him
in a fight with a single arrow,
and (Sugreeva), the leader of Vānaras,
was made the supreme king of the Vānaras.]

Now, it is our turn to help him by all means.
That is why, rightly so, (Hanumān)
has been sent to your presence.

You must quickly bring Seetā and
hand her over to Rāghava, before the
Vānara Veeras exterminate your armies.

Who does not know the power of the Vānaras
who would dare go (attacking)
even the Dēvas, when commanded so?

When I told him that this is the
message of the king of Vānaras to him,
he was outraged and looked at me
as if he would burn me off with his eyes.

pleaded with the king of Rākshasas for my sake.

O tiger among Rākshasas!
This must not be done, retract your decision;
you surely observe the canons
of stately affairs, do you not?

dūtēna vēditavyaṃ ca
yathārthaṃ hitavādinā ॥
No canon of polity can be seen
sanctioning the killing of a messenger.
The role of a messenger, who works
only towards the best outcome,
is only to convey the message exactly as it is.

virūpakaraṇaṃ dṛṣṭam
na vadhō'stīti ṡāstrataḥ ॥
Regardless of how grave the offence is,
O you of measureless prowess,
only disfiguring, and not killing,
can be seen to be sanctioned by the canons
as a punishment to an envoy!

Thus advised by Vibheeshaṇa,
Rāvaṇa ordered the Rākshasas,
‘Let this tail of his be burnt!’

As soon as those words of his were heard,
my tail was wrapped all over
with hempen cord and cotton rags.

tadā'dahyanta mē puccham
nighnantaḥ kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ ।
baddhasya bahubhiḥ pāṡaiḥ
yantritasya ca rākṣasaiḥ ॥
The Rākshasas of fierce prowess
who were more than ready,
tied me down with a rope and
set fire to my tail and assaulted me
with clenched fists and sticks.

Then those valorous Rākshasas took me,
bound (by the ropes) and enveloped by fire as I was,
to the gateway of the city
through the royal pathways announcing (my offence).

vimōcayitvā taṃ bandham
prakṛtisthaḥ sthitaḥ punaḥ ।
āyasaṃ parighaṃ gṛhya
tāni rakṣāṃsyasūdayam ॥
Then I shrunk again my huge body,
relieved myself of the bonds,
and regained my natural size.
Seizing an iron Parigha,
I slaughtered those Rākshasas.

pucchēna ca pradīptēna
tāṃ purīṃ sāṭṭagōpurām ।
dahāmyahamasaṃbhrāntō
yugāntāgniriva prajāḥ ॥
Leaping swiftly on to the top of the gateway of the city,
I burnt down that city and all its towers and ramparts
with my blazing tail, like the conflagration of
the worlds’ dissolution does all the creatures.

‘Jānaki is not burnt!’

Then Vāli was killed by him
in a fight with a single arrow,
and (Sugreeva), the leader of Vānaras,
was made the supreme king of the Vānaras.]

Who does not know the power of the Vānaras
who would dare go (attacking)
even the Dēvas, when commanded so?

No canon of polity can be seen
sanctioning the killing of a messenger.
The role of a messenger, who works
only towards the best outcome,
is only to convey the message exactly as it is.

virūpakaraṇaṃ dṛṣṭam
na vadhō'stīti ṡāstrataḥ ॥
Regardless of how grave the offence is,
O you of measureless prowess,
only disfiguring, and not killing,
can be seen to be sanctioned by the canons
as a punishment to an envoy!

with hempen cord and cotton rags.

tadā'dahyanta mē puccham
nighnantaḥ kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ ।
baddhasya bahubhiḥ pāṡaiḥ
yantritasya ca rākṣasaiḥ ॥
The Rākshasas of fierce prowess
who were more than ready,
tied me down with a rope and
set fire to my tail and assaulted me
with clenched fists and sticks.

through the royal pathways announcing (my offence).

Then I shrunk again my huge body,
relieved myself of the bonds,
and regained my natural size.
Seizing an iron Parigha,
I slaughtered those Rākshasas.

yugāntāgniriva prajāḥ ॥
Leaping swiftly on to the top of the gateway of the city,
I burnt down that city and all its towers and ramparts
with my blazing tail, like the conflagration of
the worlds’ dissolution does all the creatures.

‘Jānaki must have perished without a doubt,
for there was no part of the city
that had not been burnt down as far as I could see,
with the entire city reduced to ashes.’

I was overwhelmed by grief with that worry.
Just then, I heard the words,
each syllable of which was so pleasing to hear,
uttered by Cāraṇas in their amazement,
‘Jānaki is not burnt!’

On hearing those wonderful words,
I felt confident that Jānaki was not burnt,
and the good omens reaffirmed the same.

my heart was also at ease and filled with joy,
and the wind too carried a sweet fragrance.

I was in high spirits again
because of those omens that
had always proved to be right,
and the many and weighty reasons
why it could not have been any different,
and the words of the sages which always come true.

I visited Vaidēhi again and took leave of her.
Then I went to the Arishṭa mountain and
started my return flight, eager to see you.

the greatness of Rāghava and the power of all of you
in order to accomplish the mission of Sugreeva.
