Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 62
In this Sarga, the Vānaras continue to drink and make merry, encouraged by Hanuman and Aṅgada. Dadhimukha who was in charge of the Vana, with the help of his guards, tries to stop him. Drunk and ecstatic about finding Seetā, the Vānaras do not heed the orders of Dadhimukha. Even Aṅgada beats up Dadhimukha, uncle of his own father. Feeling helpless, he goes, along with his guards, to report to Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Sugreeva.

yuṣmākaṃ paripanthinaḥ ॥
Then Hanumān, the best of Vānaras,
and a bull among them, told them,
‘Go ahead and drink the liquor
as you please, without any hesitation,
I will stop anyone who tries to stop you!’

joined him, saying in a merry tone,
‘May the Vānaras enjoy drinking!’

akāryamapi kartavyam
kimaṅga punarīdṛṡam ॥
I must oblige whatever Hanumān asks for,
even if it is something that should not be done,
for he has accomplished his (great) mission;
then, what to say of something (as simple as) this?

vacanaṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ।
sādhusādhviti saṃhṛṣṭā
vānarāḥ pratyapūjayan ॥
Hearing those words uttered by Aṅgada,
those bulls among Vānaras,
shouted back to him in joy,
‘Excellent, excellent!’

Paying due respects to Aṅgada,
the bull among Vānaras,
all those Vānaras rushed to the Madhuvana
swiftly, like a river in spate.

ரஸவத்பலமாதது: ॥
tē praviṣṭā madhuvanam
pālānākramya vīryataḥ ।
atisargācca paṭavō
dṛṣṭvā ṡrutvā ca maithilīm ।
papussarvē madhu tadā
rasavatphalamādaduḥ ॥
Entering that Madhuvana,
overpowering the guards with their valor,
bolstered by the due permission (of Aṅgada)
and (ecstatic about) finding and hearing about Maithili,
they drank all the liquor and enjoyed the juicy fruits.

They jumped on all the guards of the Vana
who came together in their hundreds
and beat them up in that Madhuvana.

All of them got together,
snatched the liquor and drank it pitcher by pitcher;
and some even broke them off!

madhūcchiṣṭēna kēcicca
jagmuranyōnyamutkaṭāḥ ॥
Some, of honey complexion,
drank as much as they threw away.
Some, with empty vessels,
jumped on to each other, totally drunk.

Some grabbed tree branches
and slid down to the base of the trees.
Some, drunken to a fault, slept,
making a bed out of leaves.

unmattabhūtāḥ plavagāḥ
madhumattāṡca hṛṣṭavat ।
kṣipanti ca tathānyōnyam
skhalanti ca tathā'parē ॥
Intoxicated by the liquor,
the Vānaras seemed as if
they were hysterical with euphoria.
They pushed away each other
and others lost their balance.

கேசித் க்ஷ்வேலாம் ப்ரகுர்வந்தி

kēcit kṣvēlāṃ prakurvanti
kēcit kūjanti hṛṣṭavat ।
harayōmadhunā mattāḥ
kēcitsuptā mahītalē ॥
Some let off war whoops. Some cooed with ecstasy.
Some of the Vānaras, intoxicated by the liquor,
slept off on the bare ground.

கேசித்குர்வந்தி சேதரத் ।

kēcitkurvanti cētarat ।
kṛtvā kēcidvadantyanyē
kēcidbudhyanti cētarat ॥
Some laughed, doing something silly.
Others did something else that was equally silly.
Some bragged, doing something else.
And some (enjoyed) finding a second meaning in it.

yē'pyatra madhupālā ssyuḥ
prēṣyā dadhimukhasya tu ।
tē'pi tairvānarairbhīmaiḥ
pratiṣiddhā diṡō gatāḥ ॥
And the guards of the liquor,
who worked there for Dadhimukha,
accosted by the fierce Vānaras,
ran away in all directions.

dēvamārgaṃ pradarṡitāḥ ।
abruvan paramōdvignā
gatvā dadhimukhaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Dragged by their knees,
and shown the private parts,
the extremely disturbed guards
went to Dadhimukha and reported:

hataṃ madhuvanaṃ balāt ।
vayaṃ ca jānubhiḥ kṛṣṭā
dēvamārgaṃ ca darṡitāḥ ॥
With the free reign given to them by Hanumān,
they are using all their power to destroy the Madhuvana.
Dragged by our knees, we were shown their private parts.

வநபஸ்தத்ர வாநர: ।
ஹதம் மதுவநம் ஸ்ருத்வா

tatō dadhimukhaḥ kruddhō
vanapastatra vānaraḥ ।
hataṃ madhuvanaṃ ṡrutvā
sāntvayāmāsa tān harīn ॥
Hearing that the Madhuvana was destroyed,
Dadhimukha who was in charge, was furious.
He then calmed down those Vānaras, (saying):

வாநராந் பலதர்பிதாந் ।
பலேந வாரயிஷ்யாமோ

balēna vārayiṣyāmō
madhu bhakṣayatō vayam ॥
Come here, we will go and stop those Vānaras,
Who, haughty with their strength,
are swilling the liquor forcibly.

tēnaiva sahasā yayuḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Dadhimukha,
those bulls among Vānaras, Veeras,
went back again to the Madhuvana
at once, along with him.

Dadhimukha, who was in their midst,
plucked a tree with all his strength and dashed,
with all the other Vānaras doing the same.

Grabbing rocks, trees and boulders,
the Vānaras went, in their fury, to
where those elephants among Vānaras were.

dēvamārgaṃ pradarṡitāḥ ।
abruvan paramōdvignā
gatvā dadhimukhaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Dragged by their knees,
and shown the private parts,
the extremely disturbed guards
went to Dadhimukha and reported:

ஹநூமதா தத்தவரை:
ஹதம் மதுவநம் பலாத் ।
வயம் ச ஜாநுபி: க்ருஷ்டா
தேவமார்கம் ச தர்ஸிதா: ॥
hanūmatā dattavaraiḥ
hataṃ madhuvanaṃ balāt ।
vayaṃ ca jānubhiḥ kṛṣṭā
dēvamārgaṃ ca darṡitāḥ ॥
With the free reign given to them by Hanumān,
they are using all their power to destroy the Madhuvana.
Dragged by our knees, we were shown their private parts.

ததோ ததிமுக: க்ருத்தோ
வநபஸ்தத்ர வாநர: ।
ஹதம் மதுவநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
ஸாந்த்வயாமாஸ தாந் ஹரீந் ॥
tatō dadhimukhaḥ kruddhō
vanapastatra vānaraḥ ।
hataṃ madhuvanaṃ ṡrutvā
sāntvayāmāsa tān harīn ॥
Hearing that the Madhuvana was destroyed,
Dadhimukha who was in charge, was furious.
He then calmed down those Vānaras, (saying):

இஹாகச்சத கச்சாமோ
வாநராந் பலதர்பிதாந் ।
பலேந வாரயிஷ்யாமோ
மது பக்ஷயதோ வயம் ॥
ihāgacchata gacchāmō
vānarān baladarpitān ।
balēna vārayiṣyāmō
madhu bhakṣayatō vayam ॥
Come here, we will go and stop those Vānaras,
Who, haughty with their strength,
are swilling the liquor forcibly.

ஸ்ருத்வா ததிமுகஸ்யேதம்
வசநம் வாநரர்ஷபா: ।
புநர்வீரா மதுவநம்
தேநைவ ஸஹஸா யயு: ॥
ṡrutvā dadhimukhasyēdam
vacanaṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ।
punarvīrā madhuvanam
tēnaiva sahasā yayuḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Dadhimukha,
those bulls among Vānaras, Veeras,
went back again to the Madhuvana
at once, along with him.

மத்யே சைஷாம் ததிமுக:
ப்ரக்ருஹ்ய தரஸா தரும் ।
ஸமப்யதாவத்வேகேந
தே ச ஸர்வே ப்லவங்கமா: ॥
madhyē caiṣāṃ dadhimukhaḥ
pragṛhya tarasā tarum ।
samabhyadhāvadvēgēna
tē ca sarvē plavaṅgamāḥ ॥
Dadhimukha, who was in their midst,
plucked a tree with all his strength and dashed,
with all the other Vānaras doing the same.

தே ஸிலா: பாதபாம்ஸ்சாபி
பர்வதாம்ஸ்சாபி வாநரா: ।
க்ருஹீத்வாऽऽப்யகமந் க்ருத்தா
யத்ர தே கபிகுஞ்ஜரா: ॥
tē ṡilāḥ pādapāṃṡcāpi
parvatāṃṡcāpi vānarāḥ ।
gṛhītvā''bhyagaman kruddhā
yatra tē kapikuñjarāḥ ॥
Grabbing rocks, trees and boulders,
the Vānaras went, in their fury, to
where those elephants among Vānaras were.
