Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 1
In this first Sarga of Yuddha Kāṇḍa, Rāma praises Hanumān for accomplishing the mission and finding Seetā. He expresses his gratitude by giving Hanumān an embrace with all his heart and soul. He then begins to ponder about the next step, as to how the Vānaras can cross the ocean.

On hearing those words of Hanumān,
which related everything as it was,
Rāma was pleased and responded saying:

Hanumān has accomplished a great mission,
which is next to impossible in this world;
others, from anywhere on the face of the earth,
cannot even imagine doing something like this.

rāvaṇēna surakṣitām ।
praviṣṭaḥ sattvamāṡritya
jīvan kō nāma niṣkramēt ॥
Who that entered, relying on
nothing but one’s own physical strength,
the city of Laṅkā that is well protected by Rāvaṇa
and is impenetrable even to Dēvas, Dānavas,
Yakshas, Gandharvas, Uragas and the Rākshasas,
could hope to return alive?

rākṣasaiṡca surakṣitām ।
yō vīryabalasampannaḥ
na samaḥ syāddhanūmataḥ ॥
And who, however strong and valiant he might be,
could even penetrate into that formidable city,
which is so jealously guarded by the Rākshasas,
unless he is an equal to Hanumān?

Deploying his own strength,
and equally his prowess,
Hanumān accomplished the great mission
that his master Sugreeva had set him on.

bhartrā karmaṇi duṣkarē ।
kuryāttadanurāgēṇa
tamāhuḥ puruṣōttamam ॥
One who, assigned to a task that is
next to impossible to accomplish, by his master,
does it with zeal and interest,
is said to be best among men.
More or less, the same metric is used for annual performance reviews of the employees, in these modern times also. We might, now a days, call them something like: 1) exceeds expectations, 2) meets expectations and 3) does not meet expectations.

na kuryānnṛpatēḥ priyam ।
bhṛtyō yuktaḥ samarthaṡca
tamāhurmadhyamaṃ naram ॥
One, who is capable and intelligent,
that does not stretch himself to do
even a bit more than what
was asked for, and please the king,
is said to be a mediocre man.

na kuryādyaḥ samāhitaḥ ।
bhṛtyō yuktaḥ samarthaṡca

One who is capable and intelligent,
but does not pursue the assigned
task with full attention,
is said to be the worst of the men.

Hanumān has completed
the task that he was assigned to,
without falling short in any way,
making Sugreeva also very pleased.

dharmataḥ parirakṣitāḥ ॥
Discharging his responsibility and finding Seetā,
he saved me, the race of Raghus and
Lakshmaṇa of the immense strength.

I only feel nagged by this sadness in my mind
that I could give nothing to him in return
that is the like of the pleasing news he gave me.

At this time, all I can do is to give
my embrace, with all my heart and soul,
to Hanumān, the Mahātma.

Saying this and with every limb
of his filled with affection,
Rāma clasped to his bosom
Hanumān, the Mahātma who returned
accomplishing his mission.

vacanaṃ raghusattamaḥ ।
harīṇāmīṡvarasyāpi
sugrīvasyōpaṡṛṇvataḥ ॥
Thinking for a while,
the best of the Raghus said these words again,
while Sugreeva, the sovereign of
the Vānaras was listening:

sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam ।
sāgaraṃ tu samāsādya
punarnaṣṭaṃ manō mama ॥
It is great that the
search for Seetā was done well.
But, I am at a loss on what to do
when we get to the ocean.

duṣpārasya mahāmbhasaḥ ।
harayō dakṣiṇaṃ pāram
gamiṣyanti samāhitāḥ ॥
How can all the Vānaras, as a body,
reach the southern side of the ocean, of wide waters,
that is very difficult to cross?

harīṇāṃ kimivōttaram ॥
True, the news of Vaidēhi are conveyed to me,
but what is the answer for the question
of how the Vānaras would cross the sea?

rāmaḥ ṡatrunibarhaṇaḥ ।
hanumantaṃ mahābāhuḥ
tatō dhyānamupāgamat ॥
Saying this to Hanumān, Rāma of mighty arm,
the destroyer of the enemies,
who had been troubled by grief, began to ponder.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ப்ரதமஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the first Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.

duṣpārasya mahāmbhasaḥ ।
harayō dakṣiṇaṃ pāram
gamiṣyanti samāhitāḥ ॥
How can all the Vānaras, as a body,
reach the southern side of the ocean, of wide waters,
that is very difficult to cross?

True, the news of Vaidēhi are conveyed to me,

of how the Vānaras would cross the sea?

இத்யுக்த்வா ஸோகஸம்ப்ராந்தோ
ராம: ஸத்ருநிபர்ஹண: ।
ஹநுமந்தம் மஹாபாஹு:

ityuktvā ṡōkasambhrāntō
rāmaḥ ṡatrunibarhaṇaḥ ।
hanumantaṃ mahābāhuḥ
tatō dhyānamupāgamat ॥
Saying this to Hanumān, Rāma of mighty arm,
the destroyer of the enemies,
who had been troubled by grief, began to ponder.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ப்ரதமஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the first Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
