Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 4
In this Sarga, Rāma asks Sugreeva to arrange for the expedition to start immediately in that very hour, as it is auspicious, with the star Uttara conjoined with moon. He tells Sugreeva how the army should form a marching formation, who should lead it in the front, on the sides and on the rear, and that he would ride mounted on Hanumān and Lakshmaṇa would ride mounted on Aṅgada.
With every Vānara excited and puffed up with pride in his strength, the army marches like a delirious crowd, with each one jumping up and down, one lifting, and throwing off another, breaking trees, smashing boulders, plunging into lakes and blocking the flow of rivers.
Lakshmaṇa cheers Rāma saying that all omens point to his certain victory over the Rākshasas, and the stars in the sky are aligned in the favor of Ikshwākus and against the Rākshasas.
Travelling for days and nights without taking a break, the army reaches Mahendra mountain, and crossing it, reaches the ocean. Rāma orders the army to camp there, while an Upāya for crossing the ocean is thought through. The Vānaras are excited to see the rising billows of the ocean, seeming to touch the sky.

of fearsome Rākshasas,
which you described, very soon.

sītā ṡrutvā'bhiyānaṃ mē
āṡāmēṣyati jīvitē ।
jīvitāntē'mṛtaṃ spṛṣṭvā
pītvā viṣamivāturaḥ ॥
Where can he hope to escape with his life,
having carried off my Seetā?
It is Seetā who will find the hope to live
hearing that I have begun my march,
like one who touches nectar, at the
brink of death, having consumed poison.

Let us start, O Sugreeva, with the entire force!

Take the army, O Neela, O army-chief,
along a forest route where there is plenty of
roots, fruits and honey, and cool water.

The wicked Rākshasas might try to poison
the fruits and roots and the water on the way.
You should be ever-vigilant to guard against them.

The Vana dwellers should comb every
low lying area, deep recess, thicket and forest
for enemy forces that might be planted there.

our mission is dreadful and
can only be accomplished with prowess.

in their hundreds and thousands,
lead the vanguard of the army,
like a surge of the ocean.

Let Gaja who is huge like a mountain,
Gavaya of immense strength and Gavāksha
march at the head, like bulls leading the cows.

protecting the left flank of the army.

Let the impetuous Gandhamādana,
unassailable as an elephant in rut,
march, protecting the right flank of the army.

like the lord of the Dēvas on Airāvata,

of the forces, and galvanizing them.

sārvabhaumēna bhūtēṡō

Let Lakshmaṇa, who is as formidable as death,
ride on (the shoulders of) Aṅgada,
like the Lord of the creatures,
the master of all wealth, does, on Sārvabhowma.
Sārvabhowma is the name of the elephant.

Let the three, Jāmbavan, the king of the bears,
Sushēṇa of immense power and the Vānara Vēgadarsi,
protect the very belly of the forces.

the chief of the entire army forces,
ordered the Vānaras of immense valor, accordingly.

and leaped into the air immediately.

shouting, roaring and letting off war-whoops.

(They went) consuming fragrant honey and fruits
and carrying huge trees off which
bunches (of fruit) were hanging down.

Some were pushing the others off.

‘We shall slaughter Rāvaṇa and all the Night-rovers’,
roared the Vānaras who were in the vicinity of Rāghava.

the fruits and roots and the water on the way.
You should be ever-vigilant to guard against them.

for enemy forces that might be planted there.

lead the vanguard of the army,
like a surge of the ocean.

march, protecting the right flank of the army.

of the forces, and galvanizing them.

Let Lakshmaṇa, who is as formidable as death,
ride on (the shoulders of) Aṅgada,
like the Lord of the creatures,
the master of all wealth, does, on Sārvabhowma.
Sārvabhowma is the name of the elephant.

Let the three, Jāmbavan, the king of the bears,
Sushēṇa of immense power and the Vānara Vēgadarsi,
protect the very belly of the forces.

Sugreeva, the bull among Vānaras,
the chief of the entire army forces,
ordered the Vānaras of immense valor, accordingly.

and leaped into the air immediately.

each one of whom looked like an elephant.

some jumping in circles and some straight,
shouting, roaring and letting off war-whoops.

bunches (of fruit) were hanging down.

Some were falling down and then jumping up.
Some were pushing the others off.

Going in the front, Ṛshabha, Neela and
the valorous Kumuda inspected the route,
assisted by many Vānaras.
