drumākīrṇāṃṡca parvatān ।
samān bhūmipradēṡāṃṡca
vanāni phalavanti ca ।
madhyēna ca samantācca
tiryakcādhaṡca sā'viṡat ।
samāvṛtya mahīṃ kṛtsnām
jagāma mahatī camūḥ ॥
The massive army moved, covering the earth
plunging into the lucid waters of the lakes,
taking over the mountains filled with trees,
zigzagging across the plains and
walking underneath the trees laden with fruit.

With everyone’s face evidently exuberant,
the Vānaras marched on for the cause of Rāma,
with the speed of the wind,
bringing their prowess to the fore.

off chunks of rocks and trees.

Climbing on to the peaks of mountains,
those mountain-dwellers
roared and let off mighty shouts.

jṛmbhamāṇāṡca vikrāntā
vicikrīḍuḥ ṡilādrumaiḥ ॥
By the terrific force of their thighs
they stamped whole masses of creepers into a lump.
The intrepid ones danced, shaking all their limbs,
playing with boulders and trees.

by the formidable Vānaras in their hundreds,
thousands, hundreds of thousands and crores.

banyan, rose apple, Āmalaka, and Neepa trees, there.

A variety of forest trees,
moved by the speed of the wind,
shed their blooms on the
beautiful flanks of the mountains.

The wind, cool as sandal paste,
blew, comforting in its touch,
whistling in tune with the humming of the bees
in those Vanas that were fragrant with honey.

That king of the mountains, splendid with ores,
covered that massive army of the Vānaras
with the dust of those ores blown by the wind.

sarvē paryākulīkṛtāḥ ॥
The flanks of mountains that were enchanting with
the Kētaka and Sindhuvāra trees in full bloom,
the spring creepers stealing the hearts,
the vines spreading their fragrance,
the bunches of Kunda trees in bloom,
and similarly, Ciribilva, Madhūka, Vakula, Priyaka,
Sphūrjaka, Tilaka, Nāgavṛksha, Cūta,
Pāṭala, Kōvidāra, Muculinda, Arjuna,
Ṡiṃṡupa, Kuṭaja, Dhava, Ṡālmalya, the red Kuravaka,
Hintāla, Tiniṡa, Cūrṇaka, Neepa, blue Aṡōka,
Varaṇa, Aṅkōla and Padmaka, all in bloom,
were all made messy by jumping Vānaras.

ṡārdūlaiṡca bhayāvahaiḥ ।
vyālaiṡca bahubhirbhīmaiḥ
sēvyamānāḥ samantataḥ ॥
(And they did the same to)
water-wells and small ponds that were
frequented by Cakravākas, Kāraṇḍavas,
teeming with Plavas, Krouncas,
frequented by boars, deer, bears, and
frightening carnivores such as lions and tigers
and other terrible beasts that
came to drink at them from all sides.

and the blooms of Kumudas, lilies
and many other aquatic flowers.

anyōnyaṃ plāvayanti sma
ṡailamāruhya vānarāḥ ॥
The Vānaras climbed the mountain,
on the flanks of which, numerous flocks of birds
of different kinds were crooning.
And they bathed, drank and played
in the water, splashing it on each other.

Delirious, they destroyed the trees
and their fruits that were fragrant like Amṛt,
and their flowers and roots.

The honey-eyed Vānaras marched on,
happily drinking honey from the
hanging, Drōṇa-sized beehives.

Those bulls among Vānaras marched on
smashing trees, tearing off creepers
and pulverizing the huge rocks.

nadantō madhudarpitāḥ ।
anyē vṛkṣān prapadyantē
prapibantyapi cāparē ॥
Arrogant and intoxicated with liquor,
the Vānaras jumped off the trees shouting,
while others climbed on to them, excessively drunk.
This Ṡlōka might have been misplaced; it could belong to Sundara Kāṇḍa, Sarga 61 or 62, where Vānaras destroyed the Madhuvana.

Climbing on to the peaks of mountains,
those mountain-dwellers
roared and let off mighty shouts.

vicikrīḍuḥ ṡilādrumaiḥ ॥
By the terrific force of their thighs
they stamped whole masses of creepers into a lump.
The intrepid ones danced, shaking all their limbs,
playing with boulders and trees.

by the formidable Vānaras in their hundreds,
thousands, hundreds of thousands and crores.

under the command of Sugreeva.

for the fray and to relieve Seetā.

Tiniṡa and Karaveera trees (on their way).

banyan, rose apple, Āmalaka, and Neepa trees, there.

moved by the speed of the wind,

beautiful flanks of the mountains.

The wind, cool as sandal paste,
blew, comforting in its touch,
whistling in tune with the humming of the bees
in those Vanas that were fragrant with honey.

chādayāmāsa sarvataḥ ॥
That king of the mountains, splendid with ores,
covered that massive army of the Vānaras
with the dust of those ores blown by the wind.

sarvataḥ samprapuṣpitāḥ ।
kētakyaḥ sindhuvārāṡca
vāsantyaṡca manōramāḥ ।
mādhavyō gandhapūrṇāṡca
kundagulmāṡca puṣpitāḥ ।
ciribilvā madhūkāṡca
vakulāḥ priyakāstathā ।
sphūrjakāstilakāṡcaiva
nāgavṛkṣāṡca puṣpitāḥ ।
cūtāḥ pāṭalayaṡcaiva
kōvidārāṡca puṣpitāḥ ।
mucul indārjunāṡcaiva
ṡiṃṡupāḥ kuṭajāstathā ।
dhavāḥ ṡālmalayaṡcaiva
raktāḥ kurabakāstathā ।
hintālāstiniṡāṡcaiva
cūrṇakā nīpakāstathā ।
nīlāṡōkāṡca varaṇā
aṅkōlāḥ padmakāstathā ।
plavamānaiḥ plavaṅgaistu
sarvē paryākulīkṛtāḥ ॥
The flanks of mountains that were enchanting with
the Kētaka and Sindhuvāra trees in full bloom,
the spring creepers stealing the hearts,
the vines spreading their fragrance,
the bunches of Kunda trees in bloom,
and similarly, Ciribilva, Madhūka, Vakula, Priyaka,
Sphūrjaka, Tilaka, Nāgavṛksha, Cūta,
Pāṭala, Kōvidāra, Muculinda, Arjuna,
Ṡiṃṡupa, Kuṭaja, Dhava, Ṡālmalya, the red Kuravaka,
Hintāla, Tiniṡa, Cūrṇaka, Neepa, blue Aṡōka,
Varaṇa, Aṅkōla and Padmaka, all in bloom,
were all made messy by jumping Vānaras.

plavaiḥ krauńcaiṡca saṅkīrṇā
varāhamṛgasēvitāḥ ।
ṛká Łaistarakṣubhiḥ siṃhaiḥ
ṡārdūlaiṡca bhayāvahaiḥ ।
vyālaiṡca bahubhirbhīmaiḥ
sēvyamānāḥ samantataḥ ॥
(And they did the same to)
water-wells and small ponds that were
frequented by Cakravākas, Kāraṇḍavas,
teeming with Plavas, Krouncas,
frequented by boars, deer, bears, and
frightening carnivores such as lions and tigers
and other terrible beasts that
came to drink at them from all sides.

the lakes that were beautiful with
lotuses and Saugandhika blooms
and the blooms of Kumudas, lilies
and many other aquatic flowers.

jalē krīḍanti vānarāḥ ।
anyōnyaṃ plāvayanti sma
ṡailamāruhya vānarāḥ ॥
The Vānaras climbed the mountain,
on the flanks of which, numerous flocks of birds
of different kinds were crooning.
And they bathed, drank and played
in the water, splashing it on each other.

Delirious, they destroyed the trees
and their fruits that were fragrant like Amṛt,
and their flowers and roots.

The honey-eyed Vānaras marched on,
happily drinking honey from the
hanging, Drōṇa-sized beehives.

vidhamantō girivarān
prayayuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ ॥
Those bulls among Vānaras marched on
smashing trees, tearing off creepers
and pulverizing the huge rocks.

வ்ருக்ஷேப்யோऽந்யே து கபயோ
நதந்தோ மதுதர்பிதா: ।

vṛkṣēbhyō'nyē tu kapayō
nadantō madhudarpitāḥ ।
anyē vṛkṣān prapadyantē
prapibantyapi cāparē ॥
Arrogant and intoxicated with liquor,
the Vānaras jumped off the trees shouting,
while others climbed on to them, excessively drunk.
This Ṡlōka might have been misplaced; it could belong to Sundara Kāṇḍa, Sarga 61 or 62, where Vānaras destroyed the Madhuvana.

yathā kalamakēdāraiḥ
pakvairiva vasundharā ॥
Filled with those Vānara warriors,
the earth looked as if it was
covered thick with ripe paddy fields.

ṡikharaṃ drumabhūṣitam ॥
Arriving at the Mahēndra mountain
that was adorned with trees,
Rāma of lotus eyes and mighty arm
climbed on to its peak.
