Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 10
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa gives his counsel to Rāvaṇa, when there is no one in his presence except his ministers. He says that ever since Seetā arrived in Laṅkā, everyone had been noticing bad omens. He advices that it is prudent for Rāvaṇa to give Seetā back to Rāma. Rāvaṇa, annoyed with Vibheeshaṇa’s counsel, dismisses him.

bhīmakarmā vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
After the break of dawn the next day,
Vibheeshaṇa, of fierce deeds,
went to the residence of the lord of Rākshasas,
clear in his mind about what begets Artha,
and what would put (Rāvaṇa) on the course of Dharma.

(That palatial residence of Rāvaṇa)
was lofty like the peak of a mountain.
Its (towers) resembled mountain peaks.
Its apartments were well laid out.
Many notables lived there.

sagacious and dedicated ministers,
and well-guarded on all sides by
the most trusted and capable Rākshasas.

ṡaṅkhaghōṣamahāghōṣam
tūryanādānunāditam ॥
The air (in that residence) was stirred
by the deep breathing of elephants in rut.
(The residence) resounded with the blare of conches
and reverberated with the blowing of the Tūryas.

Women folk could be seen there everywhere.
The major pathways were lively
with the chatter of people.
Its turrets were covered
with gold purified in fire.
It was decorated with
the best of ornaments.

bhavanaṃ bhōgināmiva ॥
It resembled the residences of
Gandharvas and abodes of Maruts.
With abundance of precious gems,
it was like the palace of serpents.

That Veera of supreme brilliance entered
the residence of his elder brother,
like the sun, radiating with his rays
in every direction, entering a cloud.

He, the supremely powerful one,
then heard the chants by masters of Vēdas,
invoking blessings on his brother for victory.

mantravēdavidō viprān
dadarṡa sumahābalaḥ ॥
He, of immense strength, saw Brāhmaṇas
well-versed in the Mantras and
Brāhmaṇa portions of the Vēdas,
being honored with the gift of
vessels filled with curds,
flowers and unbroken rice.

Received by the Rākshasas with due honor
he of mighty arm made salutations to his brother,
the younger brother of the Financier,
who was seated, glowing with his innate radiance.

He occupied the seat adorned with gold,
indicated by the King’s glance,
observing all the customary courtesies,
being conversant with customs.

And then he tendered his counsel
that was well-reasoned and wholesome
to Rāvaṇa, the Mahātma, with
no one else present except the ministers.

After pleading with his brother to accommodate him,
he, who had seen the ups and downs of the world,
expounded on the situation and the object
in a systematic manner:

samprāptēmāṃ purīṃ tava ।
tadāprabhṛti dṛṡyantē
nimittānyaṡubhāni naḥ ॥
Ever since Vaidēhi arrived at this city of yours,
we have been seeing omens that augured ill for us.

ஸதூமகலுஷோதய: ।

sasphuliṅgaḥ sadhūmārciḥ
sadhūmakaluṣōdayaḥ ।
mantrasandhukṣitō'pyagniḥ
na samyagabhivardhatē ॥
Even though the offerings made into them
are accompanied by the chanting of Mantras,
the flames of the ritual fires do not rise steadily;
they are smoky and spluttering and for that matter,
they are engulfed in smoke right from the bottom.

அக்நிஷ்டேஷ்வக்நிஸாலாஸு

agniṣṭhēṣvagniṡālāsu
tathā brahmasthalīṣu ca ।
sarīsṛpāṇi dṛṡyantē
havyēṣu ca pipīlikāḥ ॥
Reptiles are invading the kitchens, the fire chambers
and the places where the Vēdas are taught,
and ants are being found in the sacred offerings.

கவாம் பயாம்ஸி ஸ்கந்நாநி
விமதா வீரகுஞ்ஜரா: ।

gavāṃ payāṃsi skannāni
vimadā vīrakuńjarāḥ ।
dīnamaṡvāḥ prahēṣantē
na ca grāsābhinandinaḥ ॥
The milk from cows is precipitating into curds.
The doughty elephants are getting dispirited.
The horses are neighing listlessly
and are not enjoying eating grass.

கரோஷ்ட்ராஸ்வதரா ராஜந்
பிந்நரோமா: ஸ்ரவந்தி ந: ।

kharōṣṭrāṡvatarā rājan
bhinnarōmāḥ sravanti naḥ ।
na svabhāvē'vatiṣṭhantē
vidhānairapi cintitāḥ ॥
Donkeys, camels and mules, O King,
are losing their hair and are shedding tears.
They are not able to be their normal selves
even with systematic medicinal treatment.

வாயஸா: ஸங்கஸ: க்ரூரா

vāyasāḥ saṅghaṡaḥ krūrā
vyāharanti samantataḥ ।
samavētāṡca dṛṡyantē
vimānāgrēṣu saṅghaṡaḥ ॥
Dread crows are flocking together and hovering everywhere.
They can be seen, in flocks, on the top of the towers.

புரீமுபரிபிண்டிதா: ।
உபபந்நாஸ்ச ஸந்த்யே த்வே

gṛdhrāṡca parilīyantē
purīmuparipiṇḍitāḥ ।
upapannāṡca sandhyē dvē
vyāharantyaṡivaṃ ṡivāḥ ॥
Vultures wheel over the city
in large numbers and come down on the houses.
Jackals are howling inauspiciously
both at dawn and dusk.

kravyādānāṃ mṛgāṇāṃ ca
purīdvārēṣu saṅghaṡaḥ ।
ṡrūyantē vipulā ghōṣāḥ
savisphūrjitaniḥsvanāḥ ॥
Carnivores and other wild beasts
are gathering in mobs at the city gates
and the din of their thunderous
barking and roaring is being heard endlessly.

ப்ராயஸ்சித்தமிதம் க்ஷமம் ।
ரோசயே வீர வைதேஹீ

prāyaṡcittamidaṃ kṣamam ।
rōcayē vīra vaidēhī
rāghavāya pradīyatām ॥
Such being the state of things,
I think, O Veera, we should offer expiation
by way of giving Vaidēhi back to Rāghava.

tatrāpi ca mahārāja
na dōṣaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
In any case, please do not take it wrong,
O great king, even if I have said something
out of confusion or greed (for life).

the Rākshasas and the Rākshasis,
in the city and in the inner quarters.

nivṛttāḥ sarvamantriṇaḥ ।
avaṡyaṃ ca mayā vācyam
yaddṛṣṭamapi vā ṡrutam ।
sampradhārya yathānyāyam
tadbhavān kartumarhati ॥
All your ministers refrain from saying this,
but it is my responsibility
to say whatever I saw or heard.
You shall consider this and
do what you think is appropriate.

pathyamētadvibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
So said Vibheeshaṇa, in the midst of the ministers,
giving wholesome advice to his brother
Rāvaṇa, foremost of the Rākshasas.

ஹிதம் மஹார்தம் ம்ருது ஹேதுஸம்ஹிதம்

ப்ரஸங்கவாநுத்தரமேததப்ரவீத் ॥
hitaṃ mahārthaṃ mṛdu hētusaṃhitaṃ
vyatītakālāyatisampratikṣamam ।
niṡamya tadvākyamupasthitajvaraḥ
prasaṅgavānuttaramētadabravīt ॥
Annoyed on hearing those words that
were so pregnant with meaning,
so supported by cogent-reasoning
and were so much in full consideration
of the past, present and future,
and spoken so gently,
he responded saying these words,
in his eagerness for an altercation:

பயம் ந பஸ்யாமி குதஸ்சிதப்யஹம்
ந ராகவ: ப்ராப்ஸ்யதி ஜாது மைதிலீம் ।

மமாக்ரத: ஸ்தாஸ்யதி லக்ஷ்மணாக்ரஜ: ॥
bhayaṃ na paṡyāmi kutaṡcidapyahaṃ
na rāghavaḥ prāpsyati jātu maithilīm ।
suraiḥ sahēndrairapi saṅgataḥ kathaṃ
mamāgrataḥ sthāsyati lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ॥
I do not see a cause of worry from anywhere.
Rāghava shall never have Maithili.
Lakshmaṇa’s elder brother cannot
dare confront me, even with the
support of Indra and all the Dēvas.

இதீதமுக்த்வா ஸுரஸைந்யநாஸநோ
மஹாபல: ஸம்யதி சண்டவிக்ரம: ।

itīdamuktvā surasainyanāṡanō
mahābalaḥ saṃyati caṇḍavikramaḥ ।
daṡānanō bhrātaramāptavādinaṃ
visarjayāmāsa tadā vibhīṣaṇam ॥
Saying these words, the Ten-Faced
of immense strength and fierce prowess in battle,
who had destroyed the forces of Dēvas,
dismissed his brother Vibheeshaṇa
who spoke in his best interest.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே தஸம: ஸர்க:॥

Thus concludes the tenth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,

gandharvāṇāmivāvāsam
ālayaṃ marutāmiva ।
ratnasańcayasambādham
bhavanaṃ bhōgināmiva ॥
It resembled the residences of
Gandharvas and abodes of Maruts.
With abundance of precious gems,
it was like the palace of serpents.

That Veera of supreme brilliance entered
the residence of his elder brother,
like the sun, radiating with his rays
in every direction, entering a cloud.

bhrāturvijayasaṃṡritān ॥
He, the supremely powerful one,
then heard the chants by masters of Vēdas,
invoking blessings on his brother for victory.

sarpirbhiḥ sumanōkṣataiḥ ।
mantravēdavidō viprān
dadarṡa sumahābalaḥ ॥
He, of immense strength, saw Brāhmaṇas
well-versed in the Mantras and
Brāhmaṇa portions of the Vēdas,
being honored with the gift of
vessels filled with curds,
flowers and unbroken rice.

dīpyamānam svatējasā ।
āsanasthaṃ mahāvāhuḥ
vavandē dhanadānujam ॥
Received by the Rākshasas with due honor
he of mighty arm made salutations to his brother,
the younger brother of the Financier,
who was seated, glowing with his innate radiance.

prayujyācārakōvidaḥ ॥
He occupied the seat adorned with gold,
indicated by the King’s glance,
observing all the customary courtesies,
being conversant with customs.

vijanē mantrisannidhau ।
uvāca hitamatyartham
vacanaṃ hētuniṡcitam ॥
And then he tendered his counsel
that was well-reasoned and wholesome
to Rāvaṇa, the Mahātma, with
no one else present except the ministers.

dṛṣṭalōkaparāvaraḥ ॥
After pleading with his brother to accommodate him,
he, who had seen the ups and downs of the world,
expounded on the situation and the object
in a systematic manner:

samprāptēmāṃ purīṃ tava ।
tadāprabhṛti dṛṡyantē
nimittānyaṡubhāni naḥ ॥
Ever since Vaidēhi arrived at this city of yours,
we have been seeing omens that augured ill for us.

ஸஸ்புலிங்க: ஸதூமார்சி:
ஸதூமகலுஷோதய: ।

sasphuliṅgaḥ sadhūmārciḥ
sadhūmakaluṣōdayaḥ ।
mantrasandhukṣitō'pyagniḥ
na samyagabhivardhatē ॥
Even though the offerings made into them
are accompanied by the chanting of Mantras,
the flames of the ritual fires do not rise steadily;
they are smoky and spluttering and for that matter,
they are engulfed in smoke right from the bottom.

agniṣṭhēṣvagniṡālāsu
tathā brahmasthalīṣu ca ।
sarīsṛpāṇi dṛṡyantē
havyēṣu ca pipīlikāḥ ॥
Reptiles are invading the kitchens, the fire chambers
and the places where the Vēdas are taught,
and ants are being found in the sacred offerings.

விமதா வீரகுஞ்ஜரா: ।

vimadā vīrakuńjarāḥ ।
dīnamaṡvāḥ prahēṣantē
na ca grāsābhinandinaḥ ॥
The milk from cows is precipitating into curds.
The doughty elephants are getting dispirited.
The horses are neighing listlessly
and are not enjoying eating grass.

கரோஷ்ட்ராஸ்வதரா ராஜந்
பிந்நரோமா: ஸ்ரவந்தி ந: ।

kharōṣṭrāṡvatarā rājan
bhinnarōmāḥ sravanti naḥ ।
na svabhāvē'vatiṣṭhantē
vidhānairapi cintitāḥ ॥
Donkeys, camels and mules, O King,
are losing their hair and are shedding tears.
They are not able to be their normal selves
even with systematic medicinal treatment.

வாயஸா: ஸங்கஸ: க்ரூரா

vāyasāḥ saṅghaṡaḥ krūrā
vyāharanti samantataḥ ।
samavētāṡca dṛṡyantē
vimānāgrēṣu saṅghaṡaḥ ॥
Dread crows are flocking together and hovering everywhere.
They can be seen, in flocks, on the top of the towers.

க்ருத்ராஸ்ச பரிலீயந்தே
புரீமுபரிபிண்டிதா: ।
உபபந்நாஸ்ச ஸந்த்யே த்வே

gṛdhrāṡca parilīyantē
purīmuparipiṇḍitāḥ ।
upapannāṡca sandhyē dvē
vyāharantyaṡivaṃ ṡivāḥ ॥
Vultures wheel over the city
in large numbers and come down on the houses.
Jackals are howling inauspiciously
both at dawn and dusk.

க்ரவ்யாதாநாம் ம்ருகாணாம் ச
புரீத்வாரேஷு ஸங்கஸ: ।

kravyādānāṃ mṛgāṇāṃ ca
purīdvārēṣu saṅghaṡaḥ ।
ṡrūyantē vipulā ghōṣāḥ
savisphūrjitaniḥsvanāḥ ॥
Carnivores and other wild beasts
are gathering in mobs at the city gates
and the din of their thunderous
barking and roaring is being heard endlessly.

ப்ராயஸ்சித்தமிதம் க்ஷமம் ।
ரோசயே வீர வைதேஹீ

tadēvaṃ prastutē kāryē
prāyaṡcittamidaṃ kṣamam ।
rōcayē vīra vaidēhī
rāghavāya pradīyatām ॥
Such being the state of things,
I think, O Veera, we should offer expiation
by way of giving Vaidēhi back to Rāghava.

lōbhādvā vyāhṛtaṃ mayā ।
tatrāpi ca mahārāja
na dōṣaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
In any case, please do not take it wrong,
O great king, even if I have said something
out of confusion or greed (for life).

janasyāsyōpalakṣyatē ।

For, these bad omens are seen by all people,
the Rākshasas and the Rākshasis,
in the city and in the inner quarters.

ஸம்ப்ரதார்ய யதாந்யாயம்
தத்பவாந் கர்துமர்ஹதி ॥
ṡrāvaṇē cāsya mantrasya
nivṛttāḥ sarvamantriṇaḥ ।
avaṡyaṃ ca mayā vācyam
yaddṛṣṭamapi vā ṡrutam ।
sampradhārya yathānyāyam
tadbhavān kartumarhati ॥
All your ministers refrain from saying this,
but it is my responsibility
to say whatever I saw or heard.
You shall consider this and
do what you think is appropriate.

bhrātā bhrātaramūcivān ।
rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasaṡrēṣṭham
pathyamētadvibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
So said Vibheeshaṇa, in the midst of the ministers,
giving wholesome advice to his brother
Rāvaṇa, foremost of the Rākshasas.

ப்ரஸங்கவாநுத்தரமேததப்ரவீத் ॥
hitaṃ mahārthaṃ mṛdu hētusaṃhitaṃ
vyatītakālāyatisampratikṣamam ।
niṡamya tadvākyamupasthitajvaraḥ
prasaṅgavānuttaramētadabravīt ॥
Annoyed on hearing those words that
were so pregnant with meaning,
so supported by cogent-reasoning
and were so much in full consideration
of the past, present and future,
and spoken so gently,
he responded saying these words,
in his eagerness for an altercation:

பயம் ந பஸ்யாமி குதஸ்சிதப்யஹம்
ந ராகவ: ப்ராப்ஸ்யதி ஜாது மைதிலீம் ।

மமாக்ரத: ஸ்தாஸ்யதி லக்ஷ்மணாக்ரஜ: ॥
bhayaṃ na paṡyāmi kutaṡcidapyahaṃ
na rāghavaḥ prāpsyati jātu maithilīm ।
suraiḥ sahēndrairapi saṅgataḥ kathaṃ
mamāgrataḥ sthāsyati lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ॥
I do not see a cause of worry from anywhere.
Rāghava shall never have Maithili.
Lakshmaṇa’s elder brother cannot
dare confront me, even with the
support of Indra and all the Dēvas.

இதீதமுக்த்வா ஸுரஸைந்யநாஸநோ
மஹாபல: ஸம்யதி சண்டவிக்ரம: ।

itīdamuktvā surasainyanāṡanō
mahābalaḥ saṃyati caṇḍavikramaḥ ।
daṡānanō bhrātaramāptavādinaṃ
visarjayāmāsa tadā vibhīṣaṇam ॥
Saying these words, the Ten-Faced
of immense strength and fierce prowess in battle,
who had destroyed the forces of Dēvas,
dismissed his brother Vibheeshaṇa
who spoke in his best interest.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே தஸம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē

Thus concludes the tenth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
