Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 11
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa, all set to discuss a war strategy, goes to the council hall with his entourage. He summons all the Rākshasas of Laṅkā to assemble in that hall immediately. His messengers go around the city and proclaim the order of the king. All of them assemble in the council hall and take seats appropriate for their position and relative importance. Observing perfect order and silence, they fix their eyes on the face of their lord.

The King, a sinner, was worn out
from his sinful pursuit of love of Maithili,
and from finding no respect for it
from the right-thinking people.

With time running out and war seeming imminent,
Rāvaṇa set his mind, as was appropriate at that time,
on conferring with his ministers and well-wishers.

He went to his great chariot that was
decorated with gems and coral and
covered with golden lacework, and got onto it.

Getting onto that best of chariots
that rumbled like a huge thunder-cloud,
the Ten-Necked, best of the Rākshasas,
went towards the council hall.

Warriors armed with swords and wearing shields,
and Rākshasas wielding various kinds of weapons
marched ahead of him.

Others, dressed in ugly attires and
adorning a variety of gem stones, followed him,
marching by the side and in the rear.

Super-charioters in their chariots
and others riding on splendid tuskers in rut
and on prancing horses, quickly followed,
close behind the Ten-Necked.

Accompanied by the din of a thousand Tūryas
and the clamor of conch-shells
Rāvaṇa went to the council hall.

over the head of the lord of Rākshasas
shone like the full moon, the lord of stars.

Fly-Whisks with bristles made of the tail of Camari,
handles made of clear crystals
and hubs adorned with golden laces,
shone to his left and right.

rākṣasā rākṣasaṡrēṣṭham

All the Rākshasas, standing on the ground,
heads bowed and their palms joined in reverence,
saluted that foremost of the Rākshasas
who was seated on the chariot.

அபிகுப்தாம் ஸதா ஸுபாம் ।
ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாதேஜா:
ஸுக்ருதாம் விஸ்வகர்மணா ॥
suvarṇarajatasthūṇām
viṡuddhasphaṭikāntarām ।
virājamānō vapuṣā
rukmapaṭṭōttaracchadām ।
tāṃ piṡācaṡataiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ
abhiguptāṃ sadā ṡubhām ।
pravivēṡa mahātējāḥ
sukṛtāṃ viṡvakarmaṇā ॥
It was designed by Viṡwakarma with care
with its pillars made of gold and silver,
its central areas wrought in clear crystal
and its upholstery woven with threads of gold.
He of immense power, his body glowing,
entered (that council hall)
that was guarded by six hundred Piṡācas.

priyakājinasaṃvṛtam ।
mahat sōpāṡrayaṃ bhējē
rāvaṇaḥ paramāsanam ॥
Rāvaṇa seated himself on the majestic chair
in that hall, which was studded with lazulite,
covered with the skin of the Priyaka deer,
and furnished with lavish cushions.

samarthyamiha nō mahat ॥
And then he issued the royal
command to swift messengers:
“Bring the Rākshasas here immediately;
There lies a humongous task
that demands all of our capabilities”.

சோதயந்தோ ஹ்யபீதவத் ॥
rākṣasāstadvacaḥ ṡrutvā
laṅkāyāṃ paricakramuḥ ।
anugēhamavasthāya
vihāraṡayanēṣu ca ।
udyānēṣu ca rakṣāṃsi
cōdayantō hyabhītavat ॥
Hearing those words,
those Rākshasas made a round of Laṅkā,
entering every house and
fearlessly summoning all the Rākshasas,
regardless of whether they were at play
or in bed or in the pleasure-gardens.

nāgānanyē'dhiruruhuḥ
jagmuṡcaikē padātayaḥ ॥
And they all came,
some riding in beautiful chariots,
some on proud and sturdy horses,
others on elephants, and the rest on foot.

The city, with those crowds of
chariots, tuskers, and horses converging,
looked like the sky crowded with birds.

Parking their various mounts and vehicles outside,
they entered the council hall on foot
like lions entering a mountain cave.

After touching the King’s feet,
and suitably welcomed by him,
they sat down, some on chairs,
some on mats and some on the bare floor.

the Rākshasas sat around Rāvaṇa,
the lord of Rākshasas in due order.

ṡūrāṡca bahavastadā ।
sabhāyāṃ hēmavārṇāyām
sarvārthasya sukhāya vai ॥
The counselors who were experts
in making decisions on matters of import,
the well-qualified ministers
who knew everything that was to be known and
could envision what future the held,
and the heroic warriors in their many hundreds,
lined up in that council hall
according to their position and importance,
so that all matters of order could proceed smoothly.

tatō mahātmā vipulaṃ suyugyaṃ

vibhīṣaṇaḥ saṃsadamagrajasya ॥
Then, Vibheeshaṇa, a Mahātma of great renown
riding on a big and excellent chariot
that was yoked with splendid horses
and whose parts were all made of gold,
arrived at the council hall of his elder brother.

dadau yathārhaṃ pṛthagāsanāni ॥
Then the younger brother prostrated at the feet of
his older brother announcing himself by his name.
Ṡuka and Prahasta also did the same.
And they were shown seats appropriate for them.

suvarṇanānāmaṇibhūṣaṇānāṃ
suvāsasāṃ saṃsadi rākṣasānām ।
tēṣāṃ parārdhyāgarucandanānāṃ
srajaṡca gandhāḥ pravavuḥ samantāt ॥
The Rākshasas were decked in gold
and a variety of ornaments made of gems.
The fragrance of the Agaru and sandal
and of the garlands worn by the Rākshasas
wafted all over the council hall.

na cukruṡurnānṛtamāha kaṡcit
sabhāsadō nāpi jajalpurucchaiḥ ।
saṃsiddhārthāḥ sarva ēvōgravīryā
bhartuḥ sarvē dadṛṡuṡcānanaṃ tē ॥
No one in that council hall uttered a lie;
no one shouted and no one could
even be heard chitchatting / whispering.
All of them, of immense valor, were content
with all their objects long fulfilled.
Their eyes were fixed on the face their lord.

mahābalānāṃ samitau manasvī ।

madhyē vasūnāmiva vajrahastaḥ ॥
That Rāvaṇa of immense self esteem,
in the midst of the assembly of
those confident, mighty strong
wielders of weapons, shone like
the Wielder of the Thunderbolt amidst the Vasus.

Getting onto that best of chariots
that rumbled like a huge thunder-cloud,
the Ten-Necked, best of the Rākshasas,
went towards the council hall.

Fly-Whisks with bristles made of the tail of Camari,
handles made of clear crystals
and hubs adorned with golden laces,
shone to his left and right.

heads bowed and their palms joined in reverence,
saluted that foremost of the Rākshasas
who was seated on the chariot.

abhiguptāṃ sadā ṡubhām ।
pravivēṡa mahātējāḥ
sukṛtāṃ viṡvakarmaṇā ॥
It was designed by Viṡwakarma with care
with its pillars made of gold and silver,
its central areas wrought in clear crystal
and its upholstery woven with threads of gold.
He of immense power, his body glowing,
entered (that council hall)
that was guarded by six hundred Piṡācas.

Rāvaṇa seated himself on the majestic chair
in that hall, which was studded with lazulite,
covered with the skin of the Priyaka deer,
and furnished with lavish cushions.

And then he issued the royal
command to swift messengers:
“Bring the Rākshasas here immediately;
There lies a humongous task
that demands all of our capabilities”.

udyānēṣu ca rakṣāṃsi
cōdayantō hyabhītavat ॥
Hearing those words,
those Rākshasas made a round of Laṅkā,
entering every house and
fearlessly summoning all the Rākshasas,
regardless of whether they were at play
or in bed or in the pleasure-gardens.

And they all came,
some riding in beautiful chariots,
some on proud and sturdy horses,
others on elephants, and the rest on foot.

looked like the sky crowded with birds.

and suitably welcomed by him,
they sat down, some on chairs,
some on mats and some on the bare floor.

sabhāyāṃ hēmavārṇāyām
sarvārthasya sukhāya vai ॥
The counselors who were experts
in making decisions on matters of import,
the well-qualified ministers
who knew everything that was to be known and
could envision what future the held,
and the heroic warriors in their many hundreds,
lined up in that council hall
according to their position and importance,
so that all matters of order could proceed smoothly.

Then, Vibheeshaṇa, a Mahātma of great renown
riding on a big and excellent chariot
that was yoked with splendid horses
and whose parts were all made of gold,
arrived at the council hall of his elder brother.

Then the younger brother prostrated at the feet of
his older brother announcing himself by his name.
Ṡuka and Prahasta also did the same.
And they were shown seats appropriate for them.

srajaṡca gandhāḥ pravavuḥ samantāt ॥
The Rākshasas were decked in gold
and a variety of ornaments made of gems.
The fragrance of the Agaru and sandal
and of the garlands worn by the Rākshasas
wafted all over the council hall.

saṃsiddhārthāḥ sarva ēvōgravīryā
bhartuḥ sarvē dadṛṡuṡcānanaṃ tē ॥
No one in that council hall uttered a lie;
no one shouted and no one could
even be heard chitchatting / whispering.
All of them, of immense valor, were content
with all their objects long fulfilled.
Their eyes were fixed on the face their lord.

மஹாபலாநாம் ஸமிதௌ மநஸ்வீ ।

sarāvaṇaḥ ṡastrabhṛtāṃ manasvināṃ
mahābalānāṃ samitau manasvī ।

madhyē vasūnāmiva vajrahastaḥ ॥
That Rāvaṇa of immense self esteem,
in the midst of the assembly of
those confident, mighty strong
wielders of weapons, shone like
the Wielder of the Thunderbolt amidst the Vasus.
