Each year is divided into 6 rithus: From 15th april to 15th june ( chithrai and vaikasi month)=vasantha rithu; from 15th june 15th august ( aani and aadi month) Ghrishmama rithu; From 15th august to 15th october ( aavani and puratasi month) =Varusha rithu; From 15th october to 15th december ( ipasi and karthig month)=sarath rithu; From 15th december to 15th february( Margali and thai month)=Hemantha rithu; From 15th february to 15th april ( Maasi and panguni month)=shisira rithu.

Each year is divided into 12 months; 1. Mesham. 2. Rishabam; 3. Mithunam. 4. katakam. 5. Simham; 6. kanni;7. Thulam. 8. Vrischikam. 9. dhanus.10.. Makaram; 11. Kumbam. 12. Meenam. In Tamil we are telling chithrai; vaikasi; aani; aadi; aavani; puratasi; ipasi; kaarthigai; margali; thai.maasi and panguni.

Each month is divided into two paksham Sukla paksham=valar pirai and Krishna Paksham= Thei pirai. This is based on Moon's stage.

Each Paksham has 15 thithis: one; two; three to fifteen: in sanskrit language it is called as : 1. Prathamai; 2.dweethiyai; 3; Thruthiyai; 4;. Chathurthy. 5. panchami; 6 shasty. 7. sapthami. 8. ashtami. 9. Navami. 10 . Dasami. 11.Ekaadasi. 12. Dwaadasi; 13. Thrayodasi; 14,. Chadurdasi; 15. pournami= full moon in sukla pksham and in Krishna patcham it is called as Amavasai= new moon.
