Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 20
In this Sarga, a Rākshasa by name Ṡārdūla, a spy of Rāvaṇa, who sees the camped Vānara army, goes to Rāvaṇa and tells him about the army. He advices him that it is better for him not to fight the army, but try other methods.
Rāvaṇa then sends an envoy, Ṡuka by name, with the message that Sugreeva should go back to Kishkindhā, as he has nothing to gain or lose, in the episode of his carrying Seetā off. Ṡuka goes to the other side of the ocean and conveys the message faithfully.
On hearing him, the Vānaras get enraged and jump on him and beat him. He pleads to Rāma asking him to stop the Vānaras from harassing him, as a messenger deserves not be killed. Rāma orders the Vānaras to stop harassing him. Ṡuka then asks what message he should carry back to Rāvaṇa. Sugreeva gives his message, saying that the death of Rāvaṇa is imminent from the hands of Rāma.
Meanwhile, Aṅgada suspects Ṡārdūla to be a spy rather than a messenger. The Vānaras, once again, try to capture him and beat him up. Rāma stops them from killing him and sets him free.

Then a valorous Rākshasa, Ṡārdūla by name,
came there and saw the army camped
and under the command of Sugreeva.

rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ।
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā sarvatō vyagram
pratigamya sa rākṣasaḥ ।
praviṡya laṅkāṃ vēgēna
rāvaṇaṃ vākyamabravīt ॥
He, the spy of Rāvaṇa, the evil king of Rākshasas,
having coolly reconnoitered it from all sides,
returned to Laṅkā with all speed and
told these words to Rāvaṇa:

There is a huge gathering of Vānaras and bears,
that is vast and boundless,
as if it is another ocean, approaching Laṅkā.

sītāyāḥ padamāgatau ।
ētau sāgaramāsādya
sanniviṣṭau mahādyutī ॥
The brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, sons of Daṡaratha,
of brilliant radiance, armed with the best of weapons,
have come to know the whereabouts of Seetā
and have reached the ocean and camped there.

Their forces occupy an area of ten Yōjanas all round.

kṣipramarhantyavēkṣitum ।
upapradānaṃ sāntvaṃ vā
bhēdō vā'tra prayujyatām ॥
Your envoys, O great king,
should obtain more detail about it immediately.
Either Dāna, or Sāma or Bhēda
should be deployed (ruling out Daṇḍa).

வாக்யமர்தவிதாம் வரம் ॥

rāvaṇō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
uvāca sahasā vyagraḥ
sampradhāryārthamātmanaḥ ।
ṡukaṃ nāma tadā rakṣō
vākyamarthavidāṃ varam ॥
Disturbed by what Ṡārdūla said,
Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākshasas,
quickly made up his mind
as to what should be done
and said these words to the Rākshasa, Ṡuka by name,
who was skilled at getting things done:

Go quickly and deliver, in my words,
this message to Sugreeva, the king,
without fear, but in a very gentle tone:

ததா ஹி மே ப்ராத்ருஸமோ ஹரீஸ ॥
tvaṃ vai mahārājakulaprasūtō
mahābalaṡcarkṣarajassutaṡca ।
na kaṡcidarthastava nāstyanarthaḥ
tathā hi mē bhrātṛsamō harīṡa ॥
You are a great King, born into a noble family.
You are a mighty strong son of Ṛksharajas.
There is nothing for you to gain or lose.
Moreover, O lord of the Vānaras,
you are like a brother to me.

kiṃ tatra tava sugrīva
kiṣkindhāṃ prati gamyatām ॥
I carried off the sagacious prince’s wife;
but what is that to you, O Sugreeva?
Go back to Kishkindhā.

ṡakyā prāptuṃ kathañcana ।
dēvairapi sagandharvaiḥ
kiṃ punarnaravānaraiḥ ॥
This Laṅkā cannot be reached
by the Vānaras by any means.
Even Dēvas and Gandharvas cannot (reach it),
what to say of humans and Vānaras?

tūrṇamāplutya cāmbaram ॥
Thus instructed by the lord of Rākshasas,
Ṡuka, the Night-Rover,
rose into the sky and flew,
taking the form of a bird.

sa gatvā dūramadhvānam
uparyupari sāgaram ।
saṃsthitō hyambarē vākyam
sugrīvamidamabravīt ।
sarvamuktaṃ yathādiṣṭam
rāvaṇēna durātmanā ॥
After a long flight over the ocean,
still stationing himself in the sky,
he relayed every word as he was told
by the evil-minded Rāvaṇa, to Sugreeva.

தூர்ணமாப்லுத்ய வாநரா: ।

taṃ prāpayantaṃ vacanam
tūrṇamāplutya vānarāḥ ।
prāpadyanta divaṃ kṣipram
lōptuṃ hantuṃ ca muṣṭibhiḥ ॥
As he was delivering the message,
the Vānaras sprang into the sky
ready to pluck his feathers
and beat him up with their fists.

நிக்ருஹீதோ நிஸாசர: ।

nigṛhītō niṡācaraḥ ।
gaganādbhūtalē cāṡu
parigṛhyāvatāritaḥ ॥
He, the Night-Rover was immediately
restrained and forced to descend
to the ground from the sky.

அநுக்தவாதீ தூத: ஸந்
ஸ தூதோ வதமர்ஹதி ॥
na dūtān ghranti kākutstha
vāryantāṃ sādhu vānarāḥ ।
yastu hitvā mataṃ bhartuḥ
svamataṃ samprabhāṣatē ।
anuktavādī dūtaḥ san
sa dūtō vadhamarhati ॥
O Kākutstha! Messengers should not be killed.
Please hold these Vānaras back!
Only a messenger who abandons
the message of his master and
puts forth his own opinion and
speaks inappropriately, deserves to be killed.

rāmastu paridēvitam ।
uvāca mā vadhiṣṭhēti
ghnataḥ ṡākhāmṛgarṣabhān ॥
On hearing the words of Ṡuka and his laments,
Rāma told the bulls among the beasts of the branches,
who were beating him, ‘Do not kill him!’

When the Vānaras freed him from his fear,

with the few feathers that were left:

to Rāvaṇa, who makes the worlds wail?

sa ēvamuktaḥ plavagādhipastadā
plavaṅgamānāmṛṣabhō mahābalaḥ ।
uvāca vākyaṃ rajanīcarasya
cāraṃ ṡukaṃ tūrṇamadīnasattvaḥ ॥
Thus asked, that mighty strong lord of Vānaras,
a bull among them, said these words
with no regrets whatsoever,
to that messenger Ṡuka, the Night-Rover:

ததோऽபி வாலீவ வதார்ஹ வத்ய: ॥
na mē'si mitraṃ na tathā'nukampyō
na cōpakartā'si na mē priyō'si ।
ariṡca rāmasya sahānubandhaḥ
tatō'pi vālīva vadhārha vadhyaḥ ॥
You are neither my friend nor deserve my sympathy.
You never lent any help to me,
nor are you dear to me (in any way).
You are an enemy of Rāma.
You, like Vāli, deserve to be killed
along with all your kith and kin.

க்ஷிப்ரம் கரிஷ்யாமி ஸமேத்ய பஸ்ம ॥
nihanmyahaṃ tvāṃ sasutaṃ sabandhuṃ
sajñātivargaṃ rajanīcarēṡa ।
laṅkāṃ ca sarvāṃ mahatā balēna
kṣipraṃ kariṣyāmi samētya bhasma ॥
O lord of Night Rovers! I will kill you along with
your sons, relations, and all your ilk.
Supported by the mighty army, I will
soon reduce the entire Laṅkā into ashes.

ததைவ பாதாலமநுப்ரவிஷ்ட: ।
கிரீஸபாதமம்புஜ ஸம்கதோ வா
ஹதோऽஸி ராமேண ஸஹாநுஜஸ்த்வம் ॥
na mōkṣyasē rāvaṇa rāghavasya
suraiḥ sahēndrairapi mūḍha guptaḥ ।
antarhitaḥ sūryapathaṃ gatō vā
tathaiva pātālamanupraviṣṭaḥ ।
girīṡapādamambuja saṃgatō vā
hatō'si rāmēṇa sahānujastvam ॥
You will not escape from Rāghava, you fool,
even if you find protection under the Suras and Indra.
Consider yourself, along with your brother,
as killed by Rāma, regardless of whether
you hide yourself in the sky
or by the sun’s orb, or in Pātala,
or take shelter at the feet of lord Ṡiva!

tasya tē triṣu lōkēṣu
na piṡācaṃ na rākṣasam ।
trātāramanupaṡyāmi
na gandharvaṃ na cāsuram ॥
I cannot see anyone, neither a Piṡāca
nor a Rākshasa, nor a Gandharva nor an Asura
that can save you in all the three worlds.

அவதீஸ்த்வம் ஜராவ்ருத்தம்

ஹ்ருதா ஸீதா விஸாலாக்ஷீ
யாம் த்வம் க்ருஹ்ய ந புத்த்யஸே ॥
avadhīstvaṃ jarāvṛddham
gṛdharājaṃ jaṭāyuṣam ।
kiṃ nu tē rāmasānnidhyē
sakāṡē lakṣmaṇasya vā ।
hṛtā sītā viṡālākṣī
yāṃ tvaṃ gṛhya na buddhyasē ॥
You seem not to realize that
you could kill Jaṭāyu, the king of eagles,
who was very old in age, but dare not
carry away the wide-eyed Seetā,
from the presence of Rāma or
when Lakshmaṇa was around!

மஹாபலம் மஹாத்மாநம்
துர்த்தர்ஷமமரைரபி ।
ந புத்த்யஸே ரகுஸ்ரேஷ்டம்

mahābalaṃ mahātmānam
durddharṣamamarairapi ।
na buddhyasē raghuṡrēṣṭham
yastē prāṇān hariṣyati ॥
You do not realize
that the best of the Raghus,
a Mahātma of immense strength,
whom even the Dēvas dare not assail,
is going to take your life.

nāyaṃ dūtō mahārāja
cārakaḥ pratibhāti mē ।
tulitaṃ hi balaṃ sarvam
anēnātraiva tiṣṭhatā ।
gṛhyatāṃ mā gamallaṅkām
ētaddhi mama rōcatē ॥
He is no envoy, O mighty King,
he looks like a spy to me.
Standing right here, he is
taking a note of all our forces.
I feel that he should be taken captive
and not be allowed to go back to Laṅkā.

jagṛhuṡca babandhuṡca
vilapantamanāthavat ॥
Thereupon, ordered by their King,
the Vānaras leaped onto him,
and caught and bound him,
who was wailing like a forlorn creature.

Beaten up severely by the furious Vānaras,
Ṡuka cried aloud to Mahātma Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha:

bhidyētē ca tathā'kṣiṇī ।
yāṃ ca rātriṃ mariṣyāmi

in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 20
In this Sarga, a Rākshasa by name Ṡārdūla, a spy of Rāvaṇa, who sees the camped Vānara army, goes to Rāvaṇa and tells him about the army. He advices him that it is better for him not to fight the army, but try other methods.
Rāvaṇa then sends an envoy, Ṡuka by name, with the message that Sugreeva should go back to Kishkindhā, as he has nothing to gain or lose, in the episode of his carrying Seetā off. Ṡuka goes to the other side of the ocean and conveys the message faithfully.
On hearing him, the Vānaras get enraged and jump on him and beat him. He pleads to Rāma asking him to stop the Vānaras from harassing him, as a messenger deserves not be killed. Rāma orders the Vānaras to stop harassing him. Ṡuka then asks what message he should carry back to Rāvaṇa. Sugreeva gives his message, saying that the death of Rāvaṇa is imminent from the hands of Rāma.
Meanwhile, Aṅgada suspects Ṡārdūla to be a spy rather than a messenger. The Vānaras, once again, try to capture him and beat him up. Rāma stops them from killing him and sets him free.

You will not escape from Rāghava, you fool,
even if you find protection under the Suras and Indra.
Consider yourself, along with your brother,
as killed by Rāma, regardless of whether
you hide yourself in the sky
or by the sun’s orb, or in Pātala,
or take shelter at the feet of lord Ṡiva!

ṡukastu vānaraiṡcaṇḍaiḥ
tatra taiḥ samprapīḍitaḥ ।
vyākrōṡata mahātmānam
rāmaṃ daṡarathātmajam ॥
Beaten up severely by the furious Vānaras,
Ṡuka cried aloud to Mahātma Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha:

லுப்யேதே மே பலாத்பக்ஷௌ
பித்யேதே ச ததாऽக்ஷிணீ ।
யாம் ச ராத்ரிம் மரிஷ்யாமி
ஜாயே ராத்ரிம் ச யாமஹம் ।
ஏதஸ்மிந்நந்தரே காலே
யந்மயா ஹ்யஸுபம் க்ருதம் ।
ஸர்வம் ததுபபத்யேதா
ஜஹ்யாம் சேத்யதி ஜீவிதம் ॥
lupyētē mē balātpakṣau
bhidyētē ca tathā'kṣiṇī ।
yāṃ ca rātriṃ mariṣyāmi
jāyē rātriṃ ca yāmaham ।
ētasminnantarē kālē
yanmayā hyaṡubhaṃ kṛtam ।
sarvaṃ tadupapadyēthā
jahyāṃ cēdyadi jīvitam ॥
They pull off the feathers of my wings forcibly,
and they are tearing out my eyes.
If my life is taken, it will be you
who pays for all the sins I committed,
since the night I was born to the night I die.

நாகாதயத்ததா ராம:
ஸ்ருத்வா தத்பரிதேவநம் ।
வாநராநப்ரவீத்ராமோ
முச்யதாம் தூத ஆகத: ॥
nāghātayattadā rāmaḥ
ṡrutvā tatparidēvanam ।
vānarānabravīdrāmō
mucyatāṃ dūta āgataḥ ॥
Hearing his cries, Rāma prevented him
from being killed, by saying to the Vānaras,
‘let the messenger who arrived here be set free!’
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே விம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē viṃṡaḥ sargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the twentieth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
