Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 29
In this Sarga, on seeing the Vānara chiefs shown by Ṡuka, Rāvaṇa’s heart sinks a little. He becomes angry with Ṡuka and Sāraṇa for extolling the enemy forces. He rebukes and dismisses them immediately. Then he sends more spies led by Ṡārdūla to find out everything about Rāma.
Those seasoned spies find Rāma camped with his army by the Suvēla mountain. But soon, they get caught by Vibheeshaṇa and get harried by Vānaras. Released by Rāma, who is kind enough to let them go, they return to Laṅkā and present themselves to Rāvaṇa.

கதாந்தே ஸுகஸாரணௌ ॥

tān dṛṣṭvā hariyūthapān ।
samīpasthaṃ ca rāmasya
bhrātaraṃ svaṃ vibhīṣaṇam ।
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahāvīryam
bhujaṃ rāmasya dakṣiṇam ।
sarvavānararājaṃ ca
sugrīvaṃ bhīmavikramam ।
aṅgadaṃ cāpi balinam
vajrahastātmajātmajam ।
hanūmantaṃ ca vikrāntam
jāmbavantaṃ ca durjayam ।
suṣēṇaṃ kumudaṃ nīlaṃ
nalaṃ ca plavagarṣabham ।
gajaṃ gavākṣamaṃ ṡarabham
maindaṃ ca dvividaṃ tathā ।
kiñcidāvignahṛdayō
jātakrōdhaṡca rāvaṇaḥ ।
bhartsayāmāsa tau vīrau
kathāntē ṡukasāraṇau ॥
On seeing the Vānara commanders shown by Ṡuka,
Lakshmaṇa of immense valor and the right hand of Rāma,
Vibheeshaṇa, his brother, who stood by the side of Rāma,
Sugreeva, the king of Vānara kingdom, of terrifying prowess,
Aṅgada, the strong one, the son of the son of Indra,
Hanumān of great prowess, Jāmbavan the invincible one,
and also other bulls among Vānaras like
Sushēṇa, Kumuda, Neela, Nala, Gaja,
Gavāksha, Ṡarabha, Mainda and Dwivida,
Rāvaṇa's heart sank a little.
After those valorous ones completed their narration,
he was annoyed with them and chastised them.

rōṣagadgadayā vācā
saṃrabdhaḥ paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ॥
As Ṡuka and Sāraṇa stood before him
saluting and hanging their heads down,
he spoke harshly to them
in a voice choked with outrage,
and in a tone that was harsh and resentful:

sacivairupajīvibhiḥ ।
vipriyaṃ nṛpatērvaktum
nigrahapragrahē prabhōḥ ॥
It is not expected of counselors,
who live on the bounty of their lord
who can punish or reward them at his pleasure,
to say something that is so annoying to their king.

yuddhārthamabhivartatām ।
ubhābhyāṃ sadṛṡaṃ nāma
vaktumaprastavē stavam ॥
Is it proper for you both to praise
the enemies who are against and
and are on their way to attack us,
without the occasion calling for it?

ācāryā guravō vṛddhā
vṛthā vāṃ paryupāsitāḥ ।
sāraṃ yadrājaṡāstrāṇām
anujīvyaṃ na gṛhyatē ॥
The (efforts of the) teachers, elders and
wise men are wasted on you, for you failed to
grasp the essence of administration and
governance that truly matters in real life.

gṛhītō vā na vijñātō
bhārō jñānasya vōhyatē ।
īdṛṡaiḥ sacivairyuktō
mūrkhairdiṣṭyā dharāmyaham ॥
May be you just heard, but not understood (them)!
You are just carrying it like a weight (on your shoulders)!
It is only by the grace of providence that
I am able to carry on, having fools like these for advisors!

Do you not have any fear of death
that you speak so bluntly to me,
whose command, even by the slip of the tongue,
can make or break things for you!

vanē tiṣṭhanti pādapāḥ ।
rāja daṇḍa parāmṛṣṭāḥ
tiṣṭhantē nāparādhinaḥ ॥
Trees that have been attacked
by the forest fire may survive,
but not men who have committed an offense and
ended up at the long end of the rod of the king.

hanyāmahaṃ tvimau pāpau
ṡatrupakṣa praṡaṃsakau ।
yadi pūrvōpakāraistu
na krōdhō mṛdutāṃ vrajēt ॥
I could have killed these sinners (by now)
for singing the praises of the enemy,
had the services rendered by them
in the past not toned down my anger.

மயி ஸ்நேஹபராங்முகௌ ॥
apadhvaṃsata naṡyadhvam
sannikarṣāditō mama ।
nahi vāṃ hantumicchāmi
smarāmyupakṛtāni vām ।
hatāvēva kṛtaghnau tau
mayi snēhaparāṅmukhau ॥
Go away from my presence,
never shall you be seen again!
I cannot bring myself to kill you,
remembering the services you rendered (in the past).
With all my pleasure towards you lost,
you two ingrates are as good as killed!

Abashed by this rebuke, Ṡuka and Sāraṇa left,
after hailing victory for Rāvaṇa.

upasthitāḥ prāñjalayō
vardhayitvā jayāṡiṣā ॥
Thus told, Mahōdara summoned the spies at once.
And they, summoned by the King’s orders,
hurried and stood in his presence
with palms joined in reverence,
hailing victory for him.

cārān pratyāyitān ṡūrān
bhaktān vigatasādhvasān ॥
And then Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas
told those trustworthy, valiant and devoted spies,
who were free from any kind of fear:

vyavasāyaṃ parīkṣatha ।
mantriṣvabhyantarā yē'sya
prītyā tēna samāgatāḥ ॥
Go from here and measure out
the seriousness of the endeavor of Rāma!
Find out who are his closest advisors
and with whom he likes to confer!

kimanyacca kariṣyati ।
vijñāya nipuṇaṃ sarvam
āgantavyamaṡēṣataḥ ॥
Use your skills to fish out everything
about him, leaving out nothing -
how he sleeps, how he wakes up,
and whatever else he does!

paṇḍitairvasudhādhipaiḥ ।
yuddhē svalpēna yatnēna

Astute lords of earth, kept well-informed
by their spies about their enemy,
attack and defeat the enemy with the least effort.

The spies, in high spirits,
said ‘Yes, it will be done so’.
With Ṡārdūla leading them,
they circumambulated him in reverence.

After circumambulating that Mahātma,
an eminent Rākshasa, they went to
the place where Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were.

they found Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
and also Sugreeva and Vibheeshaṇa
near the mountain Suvēla.

And as they reconnoitered the troops,
they were bedazzled and terrified.
The Rākshasas were then seen by (Vibheeshaṇa),
the Dharmātma, a lord of Rākshasas.

From among those who were thus
caught accidentally by Vibheeshaṇa,
Ṡārdūla alone who was considered the most wicked,
was taken into custody.

mōcitaḥ sō'pi rāmēṇa
vadhyamānaḥ plavaṅgamaiḥ ।
ānṛṡaṃsyēna rāmasya
mōcitā rākṣisāḥ parē ॥
Rāma, however, had him released
while the Vānaras almost killed him.
Rāma was kind enough to let off
the other Rākshasas too.

விக்ராந்தைர்லகுவிக்ரமை: ।

vikrāntairlaghuvikramaiḥ ।
punarlaṅkāmanuprāptāḥ
ṡvasantō naṣṭacētasaḥ ॥
Thus they managed to return to Laṅkā,
freeing themselves from the
Vānaras of swift prowess who harried them,
heaving great sighs and their senses numbed.

cārā bahirnityacarā niṡācarāḥ ।
girēḥ suvēlasya samīpavāsinaṃ
nyavēdayan rāmabalaṃ mahābalāḥ ॥
Presenting themselves before Rāvaṇa,
those spies, the night-rovers of immense strength,
who constantly spy in every other place,
told him of the army of Rāma
that had camped near Suvēla.

ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகோநத்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥

Gavāksha, Ṡarabha, Mainda and Dwivida,
Rāvaṇa's heart sank a little.
After those valorous ones completed their narration,
he was annoyed with them and chastised them.

As Ṡuka and Sāraṇa stood before him

in a voice choked with outrage,
and in a tone that was harsh and resentful:

It is not expected of counselors,
who live on the bounty of their lord
who can punish or reward them at his pleasure,
to say something that is so annoying to their king.

the enemies who are against and

ācāryā guravō vṛddhā
vṛthā vāṃ paryupāsitāḥ ।
sāraṃ yadrājaṡāstrāṇām
anujīvyaṃ na gṛhyatē ॥
The (efforts of the) teachers, elders and
wise men are wasted on you, for you failed to
grasp the essence of administration and
governance that truly matters in real life.

gṛhītō vā na vijñātō
bhārō jñānasya vōhyatē ।
īdṛṡaiḥ sacivairyuktō

May be you just heard, but not understood (them)!
You are just carrying it like a weight (on your shoulders)!
It is only by the grace of providence that
I am able to carry on, having fools like these for advisors!

Do you not have any fear of death
that you speak so bluntly to me,
whose command, even by the slip of the tongue,
can make or break things for you!

Trees that have been attacked
by the forest fire may survive,
but not men who have committed an offense and
ended up at the long end of the rod of the king.

hanyāmahaṃ tvimau pāpau
ṡatrupakṣa praṡaṃsakau ।

I could have killed these sinners (by now)
for singing the praises of the enemy,
had the services rendered by them
in the past not toned down my anger.

nahi vāṃ hantumicchāmi
smarāmyupakṛtāni vām ।
hatāvēva kṛtaghnau tau
mayi snēhaparāṅmukhau ॥
Go away from my presence,
never shall you be seen again!
I cannot bring myself to kill you,
remembering the services you rendered (in the past).
With all my pleasure towards you lost,
you two ingrates are as good as killed!

after hailing victory for Rāvaṇa.

Thus told, Mahōdara summoned the spies at once.
And they, summoned by the King’s orders,
hurried and stood in his presence
with palms joined in reverence,
hailing victory for him.

And then Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas
told those trustworthy, valiant and devoted spies,
who were free from any kind of fear:

Go from here and measure out
the seriousness of the endeavor of Rāma!
Find out who are his closest advisors
and with whom he likes to confer!

vijñāya nipuṇaṃ sarvam
āgantavyamaṡēṣataḥ ॥
Use your skills to fish out everything
about him, leaving out nothing -
how he sleeps, how he wakes up,
and whatever else he does!

Astute lords of earth, kept well-informed
by their spies about their enemy,
attack and defeat the enemy with the least effort.

said ‘Yes, it will be done so’.
With Ṡārdūla leading them,
they circumambulated him in reverence.

an eminent Rākshasa, they went to
the place where Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were.

they found Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
and also Sugreeva and Vibheeshaṇa
near the mountain Suvēla.

And as they reconnoitered the troops,
they were bedazzled and terrified.
The Rākshasas were then seen by (Vibheeshaṇa),
the Dharmātma, a lord of Rākshasas.

From among those who were thus
caught accidentally by Vibheeshaṇa,
Ṡārdūla alone who was considered the most wicked,
was taken into custody.

vadhyamānaḥ plavaṅgamaiḥ ।
ānṛṡaṃsyēna rāmasya
mōcitā rākṣisāḥ parē ॥
Rāma, however, had him released
while the Vānaras almost killed him.
Rāma was kind enough to let off
the other Rākshasas too.

punarlaṅkāmanuprāptāḥ

Thus they managed to return to Laṅkā,
freeing themselves from the
Vānaras of swift prowess who harried them,
heaving great sighs and their senses numbed.

nyavēdayan rāmabalaṃ mahābalāḥ ॥
Presenting themselves before Rāvaṇa,
those spies, the night-rovers of immense strength,
who constantly spy in every other place,
told him of the army of Rāma
that had camped near Suvēla.
