Tightening their hold on each other
using their arms for a noose,
they both were locked in combat.
Strong, trained and impatient,
they were then engaged in
all kinds of feats of dueling.

Becoming haughty like a tiger and a lion,
butting against each other like elephant cubs,
clashing and hitting chest against chest,
they both fell down simultaneously on the ground.

Lifting up and throwing down each other,
they went on deploying every trick in dueling.
Endowed with strength, training and practice,
those two Veeras were nowhere near getting exhausted.

repulsed each other with arms
that rivaled the trunks of elephants.
Going around each other in quick movements,
they were engaged in a terrible duel for quite a while.

The King of the Vānaras and Rāvaṇa pursued each other,
making various circular movements, taking different stances,
swaying sideways like the falling urine of a cow,
advancing, retreating, sidling, taking unpredictable angles,
dodging and warding off blows from the other,
skipping around each other, dashing towards each other,
jumping over each other, taking belligerent stances,
turning their backs on each other,
backing away from each other,
crouching to grab the other and kick the other,
shooting out one’s hand to grasp the other’s,
and pulling their hands away from the other’s reach.

At that moment, the Rākshasa
decided to start using skills of magic.
Sensing his intention, the lord of Vānaras
sprang into the sky, unexhausted
and with the glee of the winner.
Rāvaṇa was left standing there,
thus tricked by the king of Vānaras.

அத ஹரிவரநாத: ப்ராப்ய ஸங்க்ராமகீர்திம்

ஹரிவரகணமத்யே ராமபார்ஸ்வம் ஜகாம ॥
atha harivaranāthaḥ prāpya saṅgrāmakīrtiṃ
niṡicarapatimājau yōjayitvā ṡramēṇa ।
gaganamativiṡālaṃ laṅghayitvā'rkasūnuḥ
harivaragaṇamadhyē rāmapārṡvaṃ jagāma ॥
Thus earning the fame of winning a battle
and making the lord of Night-Rovers exhausted,
the son of the Sun-god, lord of the eminent Vānaras,
leapt across the great expanse of the sky
and joined Rāma, who was surrounded
by the contingents of Vānara forces.

இதி ஸ ஸவித்ருஸூநுஸ்தத்ர தத்கர்ம க்ருத்வா

ரகுவரந்ருபஸூநோர்வர்தயந் யுத்தஹர்ஷம்
தரும்ருககணமுக்யை: பூஜ்யமாநோ ஹரீந்த்ர: ॥
iti sa savitṛsūnustatra tatkarma kṛtvā
pavanagatiranīkaṃ prāviṡat samprahṛṣṭaḥ ।
raghuvaranṛpasūnōrvardhayan yuddhaharṣaṃ
tarumṛgagaṇamukhyaiḥ pūjyamānō harīndraḥ ॥
Having accomplished that much,
the son of the Sun-god, lord of Vānaras,
returned to his army, rejoyicing,
with the speed of the wind,
enhancing the ardor for battle
of the son of the King of the Raghu’s race,
and receiving homage from the hosts of
the chiefs of the beasts of the branches.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே சத்வாரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
