Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 41
In this Sarga, Rāma remonstrates Sugreeva for impulsively engaging in a duel with Rāvaṇa. Rāma sees all the omens pointing to large scale destruction of life.
Rāma leads all the commanders and heads towards Laṅkā for the attack. He takes control of the northern entrance that is protected by Rāvaṇa. Neela, along with Mainda and Dwivida takes position at the eastern entrance. Aṅgada, along with Ṛshabha, Gavāksha, Gaja and Gavaya, besieges the southern entrance. Hanumān blocks the western entrance with the assistance of Pramāthi, Praghasa and other Veeras. Sugreeva takes control of the central region.
After the army takes positions thus, Rāma sends a message to Rāvaṇa through Aṅgada, warning him that he should either give Seetā back to him with all honor and seek refuge in him, or see himself destroyed along with all the Rākshasas. Rāvaṇa gets outraged with that message of Aṅgada, but senses that his end is near.
Seeing the huge Vānara army besieging Laṅkā thus, some of the Rākshasas are amazed, some terrified, and some are delighted at the prospect of a battle.

Seeing on Sugreeva all the marks
of the battle that he had fought,
Lakshmaṇa’s elder brother embraced him
as he remonstrated with him:

You did this rash thing without consulting me.
Rulers of men do not indulge in such escapades.

daring and risky act of yours has put me,
Vibheeshaṇa and the army at unease.

idānīṃ mā kṛthā vīra
ēvaṃvidhamacintitam ।
tvayi kińcit samāpannē
kiṃ kāryaṃ sītayā mama ।
bharatēna mahābāhō
lakṣmaṇēna yavīyasā ।
ṡatrughnēna ca ṡatrughna
svaṡarīrēṇa vā punaḥ ॥
You should never act thoughtlessly
in this manner, O valiant one!
Should something happen to you,
O you of mighty arm, O slayer of the foe,
what good are Seetā, Bharata,
Lakshmaṇa, my younger brother, and Ṡatrughna for me,
or, for that matter, my own life?

I made up my mind to this effect
before you returned, even though
I know that your valor rivals
that of Mahēndra and Varuṇa:

த்யக்ஷ்யே தேஹம் மஹாபல ॥
hatvā'haṃ rāvaṇaṃ yuddhē
saputrabalavāhanam ।
abhiṣicya ca laṅkāyām
vibhīṣaṇamathāpi ca ।
bharatē rājyamāvēṡya
tyakṣyē dēhaṃ mahābala ॥
I shall kill Rāvaṇa in battle,
along with all his sons, army and mounts,
consecrate Vibheeshaṇa as the ruler of Laṅkā,
give away my kingdom to Bharata and
give up my life, O you of immense strength!

marṣayāmi kathaṃ vīra
jānan pauruṣamātmanaḥ ॥
O Rāghava! O Veera! How could I sit quiet,
once Rāvaṇa, who carried off your wife, is sighted,
confident as I am of my own prowess?

abhinandya sa rāghavaḥ ।
lakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmisampannam

Appreciating the Veera who spoke thus,
Rāghava said these words to Lakshmaṇa
who bore all the marks of splendor:

vanāni phalavanti ca ।
balaughaṃ saṃvibhajyēmam
vyūhya tiṣṭhēma lakṣmaṇa ॥
Let us become ready for battle, O Lakshmaṇa,
establishing control over
pools of good water and
woods with plenty of fruit,
dividing the army into contingents,
ready (for the fray) in formations.

லோகக்ஷயகரம் பீமம்

bhayaṃ paṡyāmyupasthitam ।
nibarhaṇaṃ pravīrāṇām
ṛkṣavānararakṣasām ॥
I see the frightful prospect of
a terrible destruction of the worlds
and decimation of the extremely valorous
bears, Vānaras and the Rākshasas alike, imminent.

patanti dharaṇīruhāḥ ॥
The wind blows violently,
the earth is in tremors,
the mountains peaks shake and
trees come down crashing.

பருஷா: பருஷஸ்வநா: ।

mēghāḥ kravyādasaṅkāṡāḥ
paruṣāḥ paruṣasvanāḥ ।
krūrāḥ krūraṃ pravarṣanti
miṡraṃ ṡōṇitabindubhiḥ ॥
Clouds looking like humongous vultures,
cruel and baleful with a terrifying rumble,
pour terrible showers of rain
mixed with drops of blood.

jvalacca nipatatyētat
ādityādagnimaṇḍalam ॥
The evening sky looks extremely terrifying
sporting the color of red sandal and
burning balls of fire fall from the sun.

janayantō mahadbhayam ।
dīnā dīnasvarā ghōrā
apraṡastā mṛgadvijāḥ ॥
Nameless birds and beasts turn towards the sun
and howl with woebegone faces and doleful cries,
rousing terrible fear.

santāpayati candramāḥ ।
kṛṣṇaraktāntaparyantō
yathā lōkasya saṅkṣayē ॥
The moon, no more bright and pleasant,
sporting a red and black halo
as if the world is coming to an end,
fills people with dread.

hrasvō rūkṣō'praṡastaṡca
parivēṣaḥ sulōhitaḥ ।
ādityamaṇḍalē nīlam
lakṣma lakṣmaṇa dṛṡyatē ॥
The orb of sun, insignificantly small
and extremely reddish, looks terrifying,
and there seems to be a black patch
across the sun, O Lakshmaṇa!

நக்ஷத்ராண்யபிவர்ததே ।

nakṣatrāṇyabhivartatē ।
yugāntamiva lōkasya
paṡya lakṣmaṇa ṡaṃsati ॥
Even the stars are not as they should be.
Look, O Lakshmaṇa, all this seems to
foreshadow the end of a Yuga for this world.

nīcaiḥ paripatanti ca ।

Crows, kites and vultures fly at low altitudes.
Jackals wail ominously in terribly loud voices.

laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām ।
abhiyāma javēnaiva
sarvatō haribhirvṛtāḥ ॥
Let us attack with all speed
the impregnable Laṅkā that Rāvaṇa rules
from all sides with our Vānara forces, right away.

Clouds looking like humongous vultures,
cruel and baleful with a terrifying rumble,
pour terrible showers of rain
mixed with drops of blood.

sandhyā paramadāruṇā ।
jvalacca nipatatyētat
ādityādagnimaṇḍalam ॥
The evening sky looks extremely terrifying
sporting the color of red sandal and
burning balls of fire fall from the sun.

ஜநயந்தோ மஹத்பயம் ।
தீநா தீநஸ்வரா கோரா

ādityamabhivāṡyanti
janayantō mahadbhayam ।
dīnā dīnasvarā ghōrā
apraṡastā mṛgadvijāḥ ॥
Nameless birds and beasts turn towards the sun
and howl with woebegone faces and doleful cries,
rousing terrible fear.

ரஜந்யாமப்ரகாஸஸ்ச
ஸந்தாபயதி சந்த்ரமா: ।
க்ருஷ்ணரக்தாந்தபர்யந்தோ
யதா லோகஸ்ய ஸங்க்ஷயே ॥
rajanyāmaprakāṡaṡca
santāpayati candramāḥ ।
kṛṣṇaraktāntaparyantō
yathā lōkasya saṅkṣayē ॥
The moon, no more bright and pleasant,
sporting a red and black halo
as if the world is coming to an end,
fills people with dread.

ஹ்ரஸ்வோ ரூக்ஷோऽப்ரஸஸ்தஸ்ச
பரிவேஷ: ஸுலோஹித: ।
ஆதித்யமண்டலே நீலம்
லக்ஷ்ம லக்ஷ்மண த்ருஸ்யதே ॥
hrasvō rūkṣō'praṡastaṡca
parivēṣaḥ sulōhitaḥ ।
ādityamaṇḍalē nīlam
lakṣma lakṣmaṇa dṛṡyatē ॥
The orb of sun, insignificantly small
and extremely reddish, looks terrifying,
and there seems to be a black patch
across the sun, O Lakshmaṇa!

த்ருஸ்யந்தே ந யதாவச்ச
நக்ஷத்ராண்யபிவர்ததே ।
யுகாந்தமிவ லோகஸ்ய
பஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண ஸம்ஸதி ॥
dṛṡyantē na yathāvacca
nakṣatrāṇyabhivartatē ।
yugāntamiva lōkasya
paṡya lakṣmaṇa ṡaṃsati ॥
Even the stars are not as they should be.
Look, O Lakshmaṇa, all this seems to
foreshadow the end of a Yuga for this world.

காகா: ஸ்யேநாஸ்ததா க்ருத்ரா
நீசை: பரிபதந்தி ச ।
ஸிவாஸ்சாப்யஸிவா வாச:
ப்ரவதந்தி மஹாஸ்வநா: ॥
kākāḥ ṡyēnāstathā gṛdhrā
nīcaiḥ paripatanti ca ।
ṡivāṡcāpyaṡivā vācaḥ
pravadanti mahāsvanāḥ ॥
Crows, kites and vultures fly at low altitudes.
Jackals wail ominously in terribly loud voices.

க்ஷிப்ரமத்ய துராதர்ஷாம்
லங்காம் ராவணபாலிதாம் ।
அபியாம ஜவேநைவ
ஸர்வதோ ஹரிபிர்வ்ருதா: ॥
kṣipramadya durādharṣām
laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām ।
abhiyāma javēnaiva
sarvatō haribhirvṛtāḥ ॥
Let us attack with all speed
the impregnable Laṅkā that Rāvaṇa rules
from all sides with our Vānara forces, right away.

இத்யேவம் ஸம்வதந் வீரோ
லக்ஷ்மணம் லக்ஷ்மணாக்ரஜ: ।
தஸ்மாதவாதரச்சீவ்ரம்
பர்வதாக்ராந்மஹாபல: ॥
ityēvaṃ saṃvadan vīrō
lakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ।
tasmādavātaracchīvram
parvatāgrānmahābalaḥ ॥
Saying this to Lakshmaṇa, his valiant
elder brother of immense strength
quickly descended from the mountain peak.
