Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 44
Streams of blood flow, with weapons, bodies and hair floating in it. The air is filled with the groans of dying Rākshasas and Vānaras. The battle field becomes a ghastly sight. Meanwhile, Rākshasas make Rāma and Lakshmaṇa their main target and the two of them destroy them all. They strike the six chiefs Yamaṡatru, Mahāpārṡwa, Mahōdara, Vajradaṃshṭra, Ṡuka and Sāraṇa with arrows, and manage to escape with their bare lives by running away from the battle.
Aṅgada, meanwhile, strikes down the horses and charioteer of Indrajit, earning applause from everyone including Rāma and Lakshmaṇa.

The Rākshasas, black and clad in golden armor,
looked like mountains with
healing herbs glowing on them.

In that darkness that seemed never ending,
the Rākshasas, besides themselves with anger,
rampaged all over the place, devouring the Vānaras.

dhvajāṃṡcāgniṡikhōpamān ।
āplutya daṡanaistīkṣṇaiḥ
bhīmakōpā vyadārayan ।
vānarā balinō yuddhē' -
kṣōbhayan rākṣasīṃ camūm ॥
And the Vānaras, in a terrible rage,
sprang up on the horses crested with gold and
banners that blazed like tongues of flame,
and tore them with their sharp teeth.

and chariots hung with flags and banners
and tore them apart with
their fangs in their fury.

pravarāṇi nijaghnatuḥ ॥
Lakshmaṇa and also Rāma
struck down noted Rākshasas,
who could only be seen
indistinctly (in that night).

yuddhyatāṃ dharaṇīrajaḥ ॥
Dust created from the pounding
of the earth by hooves of the horses
rose up into the air
behind the wheels of the chariots,
filling the eyes and ears of the fighters.

saṅgrāmē rōmaharṣaṇē ।
rudhiraughā mahāghōrā
nadyastatra prasusruvuḥ ॥
As that terrible fight, which made the
hair of the beholder stand on its end, went on,
there flowed revolting rivers of blood.

mingled with the blare of conches and flutes.

hatairvānaravīraiṡca
ṡaktiṡūlaparaṡvadhaiḥ ।
nihataiḥ parvatāgraiṡca
rākṣasaiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ ।
ṡastrapuṣpōpahārā ca
tatrāsīdyuddhamēdinī ।
durjńēyā durnivēṡā ca
ṡōṇitāsrāvakardamā ॥
With the Vānara warriors
killed by javelin, spear and hatchet
and the Rākshasas who could take any form at will
struck down by mountain crests,
and with the gore of blood flowing and
the weapons floating in it like flowers,
the battle field became
an impassable, ghastly sight.

That horrid night, which swallowed up
the Vānaras and the Rākshasas,
looked as if it would spare no creature
any more than the night
that puts an end to the world itself.

deluging him with a downpour of arrows.

and the duo of Ṡuka and Sāraṇa,

vitals with a flood of arrows,
managed to escape with their bare lives,
by running away from the battle.

ஹதைர்வாநரவீரைஸ்ச
ஸக்திஸூலபரஸ்வதை: ।
நிஹதை: பர்வதாக்ரைஸ்ச
ராக்ஷஸை: காமரூபிபி: ।
ஸஸ்த்ரபுஷ்போபஹாரா ச
தத்ராஸீத்யுத்தமேதிநீ ।
துர்ஜ்ஞேயா துர்நிவேஸா ச
ஸோணிதாஸ்ராவகர்தமா ॥
hatairvānaravīraiṡca
ṡaktiṡūlaparaṡvadhaiḥ ।
nihataiḥ parvatāgraiṡca
rākṣasaiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ ।
ṡastrapuṣpōpahārā ca
tatrāsīdyuddhamēdinī ।
durjńēyā durnivēṡā ca
ṡōṇitāsrāvakardamā ॥
With the Vānara warriors
killed by javelin, spear and hatchet
and the Rākshasas who could take any form at will
struck down by mountain crests,
and with the gore of blood flowing and
the weapons floating in it like flowers,
the battle field became
an impassable, ghastly sight.

ஸா பபூவ நிஸா கோரா
ஹரிராக்ஷஸஹாரிணீ ।
காலராத்ரீவ பூதாநாம்
ஸர்வேஷாம் துரதிக்ரமா ॥
sā babhūva niṡā ghōrā
harirākṣasahāriṇī ।
kālarātrīva bhūtānām
sarvēṣāṃ duratikramā ॥
That horrid night, which swallowed up
the Vānaras and the Rākshasas,
looked as if it would spare no creature
any more than the night
that puts an end to the world itself.

ததஸ்தே ராக்ஷஸாஸ்தத்ர
தஸ்மிம்ஸ்தமஸி தாருண ।
ராமமேவாப்யவர்தந்த
ஸம்ஸ்ருஷ்டா: ஸரவ்ருஷ்டிபி: ॥
tatastē rākṣasāstatra
tasmiṃstamasi dāruṇa ।
rāmamēvābhyavartanta
saṃsṛṣṭāḥ ṡaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ॥
Then, in that frightful darkness,
the Rākshasas made Rāma their target,
deluging him with a downpour of arrows.

தேஷாமாபததாம் ஸப்த:
க்ருத்தாநாமபி கர்ஜதாம் ।
உத்வர்த இவ ஸப்தாநாம்
ஸமுத்ராணாம் ப்ரஸுஸ்ருவே ॥
tēṣāmāpatatāṃ ṡabdaḥ
kruddhānāmapi garjatām ।
udvarta iva saptānām
samudrāṇāṃ praṡuṡruvē ॥
The din of their
angry roar as they advanced
was like the roar of the
seven seas when the world comes to an end.

தேஷாம் ராம: ஸரைஷ்ஷங்பி:
ஷட் ஜகாந நிஸாசராந் ।
நிமேஷாந்தரமாத்ரேண
ஸிதைரக்நிஸிகோபமை: ॥
tēṣāṃ rāmaḥ ṡaraiṣṣaṅbhiḥ
ṣaḍ jaghāna niṡācarān ।
nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa
ṡitairagniṡikhōpamaiḥ ॥
Rāma struck six of them in a split second
with six sharp arrows,
that were like tongues of flame.

யமஸத்ருஸ்ச துர்தர்ஷோ
மஹாபார்ஸ்வமஹோதரௌ ।
வஜ்ரதம்ஷ்ட்ரோ மஹாகாய:
தௌசோபௌ ஸுகஸாரணௌ ।
தே து ராமேண பாணௌகை:
ஸர்வே மர்மஸு தாடிதா: ।
யுத்தாதபஸ்ருதாஸ்தத்ர
ஸாவஸேஷாயுஷோऽபவந் ॥
yamaṡatruṡca durdharṣō
mahāpārṡvamahōdarau ।
vajradaṃṣṭrō mahākāyaḥ
taucōbhau ṡukasāraṇau ।
tē tu rāmēṇa bāṇaughaiḥ
sarvē marmasu tāḍitāḥ ।
yuddhādapasṛtāstatra
sāvaṡēṣāyuṣō'bhavan ॥
They, the unassailable
Yamaṡatru, Mahāpārṡwa and Mahōdara,
Vajradaṃshṭra of the huge body,
and the duo of Ṡuka and Sāraṇa,
struck by Rāma in their
vitals with a flood of arrows,
managed to escape with their bare lives,
by running away from the battle.

தத்ர காஞ்சநசித்ராங்கை:
ஸரைரக்நிஸிகோபமை: ।
திஸஸ்சகார விமலா:
ப்ரதிஸஸ்ச மஹாபல: ॥
tatra kāńcanacitrāṅgaiḥ
ṡarairagniṡikhōpamaiḥ ।
diṡaṡcakāra vimalāḥ
pradiṡaṡca mahābalaḥ ॥
He of immense strength illuminated
the cardinals and the spaces in between them
with his arrows that glowed like tongues of flame
with their golden shafts.
