gavākṣaṃ ṡarabhaṃ caiva
dvāvapyamitatējasau ।
dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ mahāvēgō
vivyādha yudhi rāvaṇiḥ ॥
The son of Rāvaṇa hit Gavāksha and Ṡarabha,
both of whom possessed limitless strength,
with two arrows each, with amazing swiftness.

கோலாங்கூலேஸ்வரம் சைவ
வாலிபுத்ரமதாங்கதம் ।

vāliputramathāṅgadam ।
vivyādha bahubhirbāṇaiḥ
tvaramāṇō'tha rāvaṇiḥ ॥
Without losing any time, the son of Rāvaṇa
struck the chief of the cow-tailed Vānaras and
Aṅgada, the son of Vāli, with many arrows.

ṡarairagniṡikhōpamaiḥ ।
nanāda balavāṃstatra
mahāsattvaḥ sa rāvaṇiḥ ॥
Having thus struck the great Vānaras
with arrows that were like tongues of flame,
the son of Rāvaṇa, of immense power and strength,
let off a triumphant shout.

trāsayitvā ca vānarān ।
prajahāsa mahābāhuḥ
vacanaṃ cēdamabravīt ॥
Thus harrowing the Vānaras
with floods of arrows and terrifying them,
he of the mighty arm laughed and said these words:

sahitau bhrātarāvētau
niṡāmayata rākṣasāḥ ॥
Look, O Rākshasas, at these brothers,
both lying on the forefront of the battle-field,
whom I entrapped in the dreaded bonds of arrows.

paraṃ vismayamājagmuḥ
karmaṇā tēna harṣitāḥ ॥
Thus told, the Rākshasas, devious fighters,
were awestruck, delighted at his exploit.

sarvatō jaladōpamāḥ ।
hatō rāma iti jñātvā
rāvaṇiṃ samapūjayan ॥
And they, who were giant like clouds,
let off mighty shouts exalting Rāvaṇa’s son,
thinking that Rāma had been slain.

தாவுபௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।

niṣpandau tu tadā dṛṣṭvā
tāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
vasudhāyāṃ nirucchvāsau
hatāvityanvamanyata ॥
Seeing the two, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
lying on the ground motionless and scarcely breathing,
Indrajit presumed them to be dead.

harṣēṇa tu samāviṣṭa
indrajit samitiñjayaḥ ।
pravivēṡa purīṃ laṅkām
harṣayan sarvarākṣasān ॥
And he, the winner of battles, filled with joy,
entered the city of Laṅkā,
bringing joy to the Rākshasas.

rāmalakṣmaṇayōrddaṣṭvā
ṡarīrē sāyakaiṡcitē ।
sarvāṇi cāṅgōpāṅgāni
sugrīvaṃ bhayamāviṡat ॥
Seeing the bodies of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
covered thick with arrows biting into every limb,
Sugreeva was gripped with fear.

vānarēndraṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
sabāṣpavadanaṃ dīnam
ṡōkavyākulalōcanam ॥
To that king of Vānaras
whose mind was in a turmoil with grief,
whose face was covered with tears and
who was distressed and gripped by extreme fear,
Vibheeshaṇa said:

அலம் த்ராஸேந ஸுக்ரீவ
பாஷ்பவேகோ நிக்ருஹ்யதாம் ।
ஏவம் ப்ராயாணி யுத்தாநி
விஜயோ நாஸ்தி நைஷ்டிக: ॥
alaṃ trāsēna sugrīva
bāṣpavēgō nigṛhyatām ।
ēvaṃ prāyāṇi yuddhāni
vijayō nāsti naiṣṭhikaḥ ॥
Sugreeva, do not cave in to worry,
hold off the streams of tears.
This is what happens in a fight;
there is no guarantee of victory.

ஸஸேஷபாக்யதாऽஸ்மாகம்
யதி வீர பவிஷ்யதி ।

yadi vīra bhaviṣyati ।
mōhamētau prahāsyētē
mahātmānau mahābalau ॥
If we have some little luck still left,
these mighty ones of immense strength
will recover from their swoon.

பர்யவஸ்தாபயாத்மாநம்
அநாதம் மாம் ச வாநர ।
ஸத்யதர்மாபிரக்தாநாம்

paryavasthāpayātmānam
anāthaṃ māṃ ca vānara ।
satyadharmābhiraktānām
nāsti mṛtyukṛtaṃ bhayam ॥
Please be steady and instill the same in me,
who has no one else to turn to.
One who is invested in truth and Dharma
would not have any fear from death.

ஜலக்லிந்நேந பாணிநா ।

jalaklinnēna pāṇinā ।
sugrīvasya ṡubhē nētrē
pramamārja vibhiṣaṇaḥ ॥
Saying this, Vibheeshaṇa wiped Sugreeva’s eyes
with his hands dipped in water.

வித்யயா பரிஜப்ய ச ।

vidyayā parijapya ca ।
sugrīvanētrē dharmātmā
sa mamārja vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
Taking water (in his hands) and
invoking spiritual powers in it,
Vibheeshaṇa, the Dharmātma,
wiped the eyes of Sugreeva.

கபிராஜஸ்ய தீமத: ।

kapirājasya dhīmataḥ ।
abravīt kālasamprāptam
asambhramamidaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Having wiped the face of the sagacious king of Vānaras,
he spoke these words that were apt at that time,
holding himself steady:
