Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 49
In this Sarga Rāma regains consciousness and sees Lakshmaṇa lying on the ground with his body covered in blood and arrows. He becomes worried and cries. He tells the Vānaras that he will also give up his life, if his brother were not to survive. He says that he cannot go back to Ayōdhyā without his brother. He thanks them for all the help they rendered and asks them to plan for a safe retreat.
Seeing him thus lament, the Vānaras shed tears. Meanwhile Vibheeshaṇa returns after stabilizing the forces that are in panic everywhere. Mistaking him to be Indrajit the Vānaras run helter-skelter.

parivārya mahātmānau
tasthuḥ ṡōkapariplutāḥ ॥
Sugreeva and all the great
Vānara chiefs of immense strength
stood around the sons of Daṡaratha in anguish
as they lay on the ground
bound by those terrible arrows,
breathing heavily like snakes hissing,
their bodies covered with blood.

Meanwhile, the valiant Rāma recovered consciousness,
because of his grit and power,
though still bound by the bonds of the arrows.

Then, seeing his brother with all his strength sapped,
his body bathed in blood and hugging the earth,
his face woebegone, Rāma became agitated and cried.

for Seetā or for my own life,
when I see my brother vanquished
in battle and lying low ?

martyalōkē vicinvatā ।
na lakṣmaṇasamō bhrātā
sacivaḥ sāmparāyikaḥ ॥
One may search and find another
woman like Seetā in the world of humans,
but not a brother like Lakshmaṇa,
faithful advisor and reliable companion in fight.

were to merge back into the five elements,
I shall give up my life
while (all these) Vānaras are watching.

mātaraṃ kiṃ nu kaikayīm ।
kathamambāṃ sumitrāṃ ca
putradarṡanalālasām ।
vivatsāṃ vēpamānāṃ ca
krōṡantīṃ kurarīmiva ।
kathamāṡvāsayiṣyāmi
yadā yāsyāmi taṃ vinā ॥
If I go back without him
what shall I say to my mother Kousalyā
or to Kaikēyee, or to his mother Sumitrā
who yearns for a sight of her son?
How can I console her, as she trembles
like a female osprey bereaved of her young?

vinā tēna gataḥ punaḥ ॥
How can I tell Ṡatrughna,
and Bharata of great repute,
‘I have come back without him
who came along with me to the Vana!’

Ah! How can I bear to hear Sumitrā’s reproaches!
I shall give up this body right here,
I do not feel like living any longer!

anāryaṃ yatkṛtē hyasau ।
lakṣmaṇaḥ patitaḥ ṡētē
ṡaratalpē gatāsuvat ॥
Dhik! What an ignoble evil-doer I am,
because of whom Lakshmaṇa was struck down
and lies on the bed of arrows
looking like one dead!

āṡvāsayasi lakṣmaṇa ।

māmārtamabhibhāṣitum ॥
Whenever I was overwhelmed by grief,
you, O Lakshmaṇa, used to cheer me up.
But now, I am woebegone,
and you cannot even talk to me,
with your own life force lost.

nihatā rākṣasāḥ kṣitau ।
tasyāmēvādya ṡūrastvam
ṡētē vinihataḥ paraiḥ ॥
Many Rākshasas, struck down by you,
fell today on the ground,
right on which you lie,
struck down by the enemy.

svaṡōṇitapariplutaḥ ।
ṡarajālaiṡcitō bhāsi
bhāskarō'stamiva vrajan ॥
You, lying on the bed of arrows,
look like the setting sun
with your body bathed in your own blood
and arrows sticking out all over it.

பாணாபிஹதமர்மத்வாத்
ந ஸக்நோத்யபிபாஷிதும் ।

bāṇābhihatamarmatvāt
na ṡaknōtyabhibhāṣitum ।
rujā cābruvatō'pyasya
dṛṣṭirāgēṇa sūcyatē ॥
With his vitals hurt, he is not able to speak.
Even though he is not able to say it out,
the pain he suffers is evident in his eyes.

tathaivainaṃ yamakṣayam ॥
Just as he, of towering splendor,
followed me to the Vana,
I shall follow him to the abode of Yama.

māṃ ca nityamanuvrataḥ ।
imāmadya gatō'vasthām
mamānāryasya durnayaiḥ ॥
A lover of his kin always, and ever by my side,
he has fallen today into this state
because of wrongs that I,
the unworthy, have committed.

lakṣmaṇēna na saṃsmarē ।
paruṣaṃ vipriyaṃ vāpi
ṡrāvitaṃ tu kadācana ॥
I cannot remember hearing
the valiant Lakshmaṇa say
a harsh or unkind word to me,
even when he was extremely angry.

பஞ்சபாணஸதாநி ய: ।

visasarjaikavēgēna
pańcabāṇaṡatāni yaḥ ।
iṣvastrēṣvadhikastasmāt
kārtavīryācca lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Lakshmaṇa is superior
in archery and in deploying Astras
even to Kārtaveerya who could shoot
five hundred arrows at a time.
Kārtaveerya had a thousand hands, and hence
could discharge five hundred arrows at a time.

Just as he, of towering splendor,
followed me to the Vana,
I shall follow him to the abode of Yama.

இஷ்டபந்துஜநோ நித்யம்
மாம் ச நித்யமநுவ்ரத: ।
இமாமத்ய கதோऽவஸ்தாம்
மமாநார்யஸ்ய துர்நயை: ॥
iṣṭabandhujanō nityam
māṃ ca nityamanuvrataḥ ।
imāmadya gatō'vasthām
mamānāryasya durnayaiḥ ॥
A lover of his kin always, and ever by my side,
he has fallen today into this state
because of wrongs that I,
the unworthy, have committed.

ஸுருஷ்டேநாபி வீரேண
லக்ஷ்மணேந ந ஸம்ஸ்மரே ।
பருஷம் விப்ரியம் வாபி
ஸ்ராவிதம் து கதாசந ॥
suruṣṭēnāpi vīrēṇa
lakṣmaṇēna na saṃsmarē ।
paruṣaṃ vipriyaṃ vāpi
ṡrāvitaṃ tu kadācana ॥
I cannot remember hearing
the valiant Lakshmaṇa say
a harsh or unkind word to me,
even when he was extremely angry.

விஸஸர்ஜைகவேகேந
பஞ்சபாணஸதாநி ய: ।
இஷ்வஸ்த்ரேஷ்வதிகஸ்தஸ்மாத்
கார்தவீர்யாச்ச லக்ஷ்மண: ॥
visasarjaikavēgēna
pańcabāṇaṡatāni yaḥ ।
iṣvastrēṣvadhikastasmāt
kārtavīryācca lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Lakshmaṇa is superior
in archery and in deploying Astras
even to Kārtaveerya who could shoot
five hundred arrows at a time.
Kārtaveerya had a thousand hands, and hence
could discharge five hundred arrows at a time.
