Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 51
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa hears the mighty din of war whoops by the Vānaras. It puzzles him as it comes at a time when the Vānaras are supposed to be mourning the death of the Rāghavas. His attendants find out that Rāma and Lakshmaṇa have been freed from the bonds of the arrows.
Rāvaṇa’s heart sinks seeing all those powerful Astras, which hitherto have never failed him, go in vain. He worries whether all his forces, put together, could be of any effect in the battle field. Rāvaṇa then summons Dhūmrāksha and sends him to fight the Vānaras. Dhūmrāksha marches with his army to the western gate that is blocked by Hanumān. On his way, he sees many ominous portents.

Then the tumultuous din created by
the shouts of the powerful Vānaras
was heard by Rāvaṇa and the Rākshasas.

Hearing that rhythmic and majestic sound,
he, seated amidst the ministers, said these words:

வ்யக்தம் ஸுமஹதீ ப்ரீதி:
ஏதேஷாம் நாத்ர ஸம்ஸய: ।
ததா ஹி விபுலைர்நாத:
சுக்ஷுபே வருணாலய: ॥
yathā'sau samprahṛṣṭānām
vānarāṇāṃ samutthitaḥ ।
bahūnāṃ sumahānādō
mēghānāmiva garjatām ।
vyaktaṃ sumahatī prītiḥ
ētēṣāṃ nātra saṃṡayaḥ ।
tathā hi vipulairnādaḥ
cukṣubhē varuṇālayaḥ ॥
This extremely spirited noise that arises
from the multitude of rejoicing Vānaras,
which is like the rumbling of clouds
indicates, for sure, that something has happened
that has made them extremely happy.
It is like the roar of a swelling ocean.

தௌ து பத்தௌ ஸரைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:

tau tu baddhau ṡaraistīkṣṇaiḥ
bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
ayaṃ ca sumahānnādaḥ
ṡaṅkāṃ janayatīva mē ॥
This loud roar puzzles me,
considering that the brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
are bound by the sharp arrows.

Having said these words to his ministers,
the King of the Rākshasas asked the
Rākshasas who waited on him:

harṣakāraṇamutthitam ॥
Find out quickly, the reason for the rise of
such exuberance among all the Vana-dwellers
at a time when they are supposed to be grieving.

dadṛṡuḥ pālitāṃ sēnām
sugrīvēṇa mahātmanā ॥
Thus bidden, they climbed up the ramparts
in all haste and saw the army
commanded by the mighty Sugreeva.

samutthitau mahābhāgau
viṣēduḥ prēkṣya rākṣasāḥ ॥
And the Rākshasas became sad
seeing that fortunate scions of Raghus rise,
freed from the terrible bonds of the arrows.

With their hearts sunk in fright,
they climbed down from the ramparts.
They came back to the lord of Rākshasas,
with their faces full of sadness.

With woebegone faces, the Night-rovers
conveyed the unpleasant news to Rāvaṇa,
giving a complete and true account
summoning their eloquence to aid.

விமுக்தௌ ஸரபந்தேந
தௌ த்ருஸ்யேதே ரணாஜிரே ।
பாஸாநிவ கஜௌ சித்த்வா
கஜேந்த்ரஸமவிக்ரமௌ ॥
yau tāvindrajitā yuddhē
bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
nibaddhau ṡarabandhēna
niṣprakampabhujau kṛtau ।
vimuktau ṡarabandhēna
tau dṛṡyētē raṇājirē ।
pāṡāniva gajau chittvā
gajēndrasamavikramau ॥
The brothers, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
whom Indrajit had bound with his arrows and
who could not so much as move even their arms,
are now to be seen on the battle-field
freed from the bonds of arrows.
Apparently they, who have the prowess of great tuskers,
have snapped their bonds as bound elephants do.

rākṣasēndrō mahābalaḥ ।
cintāṡōkasamākrāntō
viṣaṇṇavadanō'bravīt ॥
On hearing those words of theirs,
the lord of Rākshasas of immense strength
was overwhelmed by worry and grief.
With a woebegone face, he said:

ṡarairāṡīviṣōpamaiḥ ।
amōghaiḥ sūryasaṅkāṡaiḥ
pramathyēndrajitā yudhi ॥
They were bound by the arrows that were
fierce like venomous serpents
dazzling like the sun
and blessed with powers that never go in vain,
shot by Indrajit with all his force.

yadi muktau ripū mama ।
saṃṡayasthamidaṃ sarvam
anupaṡyāmyahaṃ balam ॥
That my enemies could free themselves
from the bonds of those Astras
makes me wonder whether
these entire forces are set to be doomed.

niṣphalāḥ khalu saṃvṛttāḥ
ṡarā vāsukitējasaḥ ।
ādattaṃ yaiḥ susaṅgrāmē
ripūṇāṃ mama jīvitam ॥
These arrows, which are as powerful as Vāsuki,
that used to take the lives of my adversaries
on the battle-field, are now buried in failure.

Having said this and
Hissing in wrath like a snake,
he, seated in the midst of the Rākshasas,
ordered the Rākshasa by name Dhūmrāksha:

tvaṃ vadhāyābhiniryāhi
rāmasya saha vānaraiḥ ॥
Take a large contingent of
Rākshasa forces with you,
O you of formidable prowess,
and march forth right away
to slay Rāma and the Vānaras.

nirjagāma nṛpālayāt ॥
Thus told by the sagacious lord of Rākshasas,
Dhūmrāksha, delighted, made his bow
and left the abode of the king.

ஸரா வாஸுகிதேஜஸ: ।
ஆதத்தம் யை: ஸுஸங்க்ராமே
ரிபூணாம் மம ஜீவிதம் ॥
niṣphalāḥ khalu saṃvṛttāḥ
ṡarā vāsukitējasaḥ ।
ādattaṃ yaiḥ susaṅgrāmē
ripūṇāṃ mama jīvitam ॥
These arrows, which are as powerful as Vāsuki,
that used to take the lives of my adversaries
on the battle-field, are now buried in failure.

ஏவமுக்த்வா து ஸங்க்ருத்தோ
நி:ஸ்வஸந்நுரகோ யதா ।
அப்ரவீத்ரக்ஷஸாம் மத்யே
தூம்ராக்ஷம் நாம ராக்ஷஸம் ॥
ēvamuktvā tu saṅkruddhō
niḥṡvasannuragō yathā ।
abravīdrakṣasāṃ madhyē
dhūmrākṣaṃ nāma rākṣasam ॥
Having said this and
Hissing in wrath like a snake,
he, seated in the midst of the Rākshasas,
ordered the Rākshasa by name Dhūmrāksha:

பலேந மஹதா யுக்தோ
ரக்ஷஸாம் பீமவிக்ரம ।
த்வம் வதாயாபிநிர்யாஹி
ராமஸ்ய ஸஹ வாநரை: ॥
balēna mahatā yuktō
rakṣasāṃ bhīmavikrama ।
tvaṃ vadhāyābhiniryāhi
rāmasya saha vānaraiḥ ॥
Take a large contingent of
Rākshasa forces with you,
O you of formidable prowess,
and march forth right away
to slay Rāma and the Vānaras.

ஏவமுக்தஸ்து தூம்ராக்ஷோ
ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரேண தீமதா ।
க்ருத்வா ப்ரணாமம் ஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டோ
நிர்ஜகாம ந்ருபாலயாத் ॥
ēvamuktastu dhūmrākṣō
rākṣasēndrēṇa dhīmatā ।
kṛtvā praṇāmaṃ saṃhṛṣṭō
nirjagāma nṛpālayāt ॥
Thus told by the sagacious lord of Rākshasas,
Dhūmrāksha, delighted, made his bow
and left the abode of the king.
