Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 54
In this Sarga, the fierce battle between the Vānaras under the command of Aṅgada, and Rākshasas under the command of Vajradaṃshṭra continues. Then they both fight with each other, Vajradaṃshṭra hitting Aṅgada with thousands of arrows and Aṅgada hitting Vajradaṃshṭra with rocks and trees. Aṅgada kills Vajradaṃshṭra and the Rākshasas flee to Laṅkā, terrified and in shame.

Vajradaṃshṭra, that Rākshasa
of immense strength, was enraged.

He tied the string of his formidable bow,
which shone like the thunderbolt of Indra,
and rained arrows on the Vānara forces.

seated in their own chariots, fought heroically,
wielding a variety of weaponry.

The heroic bulls among Vānaras, armed with rocks,
put up a consolidated fight everywhere.

And the extremely valiant Vānaras,
who were imposing like elephants in rut,
hurled rocks, trees and
huge boulders on the Rākshasas.

With the host of brave Rākshasas

bhinnaiḥ pādaiṡca bāhubhiḥ ।
ṡastrairaraditadēhāstu
rudhirēṇa samukṣitāḥ ।
harayō rākṣasāṡcaiva
ṡēratē gāṃ samāṡritāḥ ।
kaṅkagṛdhrabalāḍhyāṡca
gōmāyukulasaṅkulāḥ ॥
Some of the Vānaras and Rākshasas,
their heads broken, hands and feet mangled and
bodies drenched in blood pounded by Ṡastras,
lay hugging the ground, which was
encircled by vultures and eagles and
crowded by packs of wolves.

chinnakāyāṡca bhūtalē ।
vānarā rākṣasāṡcāpi
nipētustatra vai raṇē ॥
Headless trunks flew around
frightening the weak hearted.
Mangled bodies of Vānaras and Rākshasas
with severed arms, hands and heads
fell there in that battle on the ground.

the entire Rākshasa force broke down
while Vajradaṃshṭra was watching.

hanyamānān plavaṅgamaiḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā sa rōṣatāmrākṣō
vajradaṃṣṭraḥ pratāpavān ।
pravivēṡa dhanuṣpāṇiḥ
trāsayan harivāhinīm ॥
On seeing the Rākshasas
decimated and terrorized by the Vānaras
the fierce Vajradaṃshṭra, armed with the bow,
charged into the Vānara army, putting fear into it.

bibhēda vānarāṃstatra
saptāṣṭau nava pańca ca ।
vivyādha paramakruddhō
vajradaṃṣṭraḥ pratāpavān ॥
He rent the Vānaras with
arrows that flew straight,
propelled by Kaṅka feathers.
The powerful Vajradaṃshṭra,
extremely outraged, struck down the Vānaras,
seven, eight, nine and five at a time.

ṡaraiḥ saṅkṛttadēhinaḥ ।

prajāpatimiva prajāḥ ॥
Their bodies rent by the arrows,
the terrified Vānaras fled
seeking Aṅgada’s protection,
as men seeking refuge in the Creator.

the son of Vāli cast a glance in his wrath,
at Vajradaṃshṭra who was doing the same.

like a lion and an elephant in rut.

The son of Vāli was struck in the vitals
with thousands of arrows by
Vajradaṃshṭra of immense strength
as an elephant by Tōmaras.

His whole body covered with blood,
the son of Vāli of immense strength
hurled a tree at Vajradaṃshṭra,
showing his formidable prowess.

nikṛttaḥ patitō bhuvi ॥
Seeing the tree about to hit him,
the Rākshasa, unruffled, cut it to many pieces,
and it fell down on the ground.

On seeing the power of Vajradaṃshṭra
that bull among Vānaras snatched a huge rock
and flung it at him with a roar.

rathādāplutya vīryavān ।
gadāpāṇirasambhrāntaḥ

Seeing it fly towards him,
the doughty warrior jumped off his chariot
and stood unperturbed on the ground
with a mace in his hand.

extremely outraged, struck down the Vānaras,

ṡaraiḥ saṅkṛttadēhinaḥ ।
aṅgadaṃ sampradhāvanti
prajāpatimiva prajāḥ ॥
Their bodies rent by the arrows,
the terrified Vānaras fled
seeking Aṅgada’s protection,
as men seeking refuge in the Creator.

dṛṣṭvā vālisutastadā ।
krōdhēna vajradaṃṣṭraṃ tam
udīkṣantamudaikṣata ॥
Seeing the Vānara warriors shattered,
the son of Vāli cast a glance in his wrath,
at Vajradaṃshṭra who was doing the same.

yōyudhyētē parasparam ।
cēratuḥ paramakruddhau
harimattagajāviva ॥
Aṅgada and Vajradaṃshṭra
fought with each other in rage
like a lion and an elephant in rut.

jaghāna marmadēṡēṣu
mātaṅgamiva tōmaraiḥ ॥
The son of Vāli was struck in the vitals
with thousands of arrows by
Vajradaṃshṭra of immense strength
as an elephant by Tōmaras.

rudhirōkṣitasarvāṅgō
vālisūnurmahābalaḥ ।
cikṣēpa vajradaṃṣṭrāya
vṛkṣaṃ bhīmaparākramaḥ ॥
His whole body covered with blood,
the son of Vāli of immense strength
hurled a tree at Vajradaṃshṭra,
showing his formidable prowess.

அஸம்ப்ராந்தஸ்ச ராக்ஷஸ: ।

நிக்ருத்த: பதிதோ புவி ॥
dṛṣṭvā''patantaṃ taṃ vṛkṣam
asambhrāntaṡca rākṣasaḥ ।
cicchēda bahudhā sō'pi
nikṛttaḥ patitō bhuvi ॥
Seeing the tree about to hit him,
the Rākshasa, unruffled, cut it to many pieces,
and it fell down on the ground.

தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா வஜ்ரதம்ஷ்ட்ரஸ்ய
விக்ரமம் ப்லவகர்ஷப: ।

சிக்ஷேப ச நநாத ச ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vajradaṃṣṭrasya
vikramaṃ plavagarṣabhaḥ ।
pragṛhya vipulaṃ ṡailam
cikṣēpa ca nanāda ca ॥
On seeing the power of Vajradaṃshṭra
that bull among Vānaras snatched a huge rock
and flung it at him with a roar.

ஸமாபதந்தம் தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ரதாதாப்லுத்ய வீர்யவாந் ।
கதாபாணிரஸம்ப்ராந்த:
ப்ருதிவ்யாம் ஸமதிஷ்டத ॥
samāpatantaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā
rathādāplutya vīryavān ।
gadāpāṇirasambhrāntaḥ
pṛthivyāṃ samatiṣṭhata ॥
Seeing it fly towards him,
the doughty warrior jumped off his chariot
and stood unperturbed on the ground
with a mace in his hand.
