Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 75
In this Sarga, concluding that Rāvaṇa can no more go on the offense with Kumbhakarṇa having been slain, Sugreeva orders the Vānaras to set fire to Laṅkā, and they do so. Houses, mansions, towers tumble to the ground burned down. Weapons, clothes, precious gems and everything get consumed by the fire. Horses and elephants flee in confusion. Women wailed and flee with their children.
Meanwhile, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, their wounds completely healed, shower a rain of arrows on Laṅkā. The plans of Rākshasas to fight back are in shambles. Meanwhile, Sugreeva on the one hand, and Rāvaṇa on the other, instruct their respective armies to continue the fight without holding back. A great fight then ensues between Vānaras and Rākshasas.

Thereupon Sugreeva, the extraordinarily
powerful ruler of Vānaras,
told Hanumān these words,
directing him on what was to be done next.

pradagdhuṃ rāvaṇālayam ॥
Let all the bulls among Vānaras
who are swift and of immense strength
and all the Vānaras that rival lions
go to Laṅkā quickly with torches
to burn down the abode of Rāvaṇa.

upon Laṅkā carrying torches.

to the gateways, guard-houses,
to the mansions and to every kind
of dwelling on the side-streets.

Saddles and other accoutrement
of horses in myriad shapes,
the halters of elephants and
the bands on their backs,
the well-wrought fittings of chariots,
the armors of warriors,
the coats of mail of horses and elephants,
swords, bows, bowstrings, arrows, Tōmaras, Ṡaktis,
articles made of wool like blankets,
articles made of tails like fly-whisks,
bucklers, tiger-skins, birds,
palaces everywhere studded with
a variety of pearls and diamonds,
and a variety of piles of weapons
were all consumed by that fire.

The fire raged again and again, consuming
hundreds of thousands of the dwellers of Laṅkā,
some reeling under intoxication
their eyes whirling and gait unsteady and
their clothes wrapped partly
around the bodies of their wives,
some becoming angry with the foe
and holding maces and spears in their hands,
some simply eating and drinking,
some happily sleeping on exquisite
beds along with their lovers, and
some running in fear taking
their children along with them.

The stately homes that only royal folk could afford,
which were majestic like mountains,
dazzling like the sun and
lofty as if they would touch the sun,
with their solemn appearance and designs,
furnished with couches and beds all over,
the rooms on their terraces
shaped like the moon and the half-moon,
their casements wrought in stylish designs,
studded with corals and diamonds,
and resounding with the
sounds of Krounca birds and peacocks,
music of Veeṇas and tinkling of ornaments
were consumed by the fire.

The arched gateways enveloped by the fire
shone like banks of clouds accompanied
by lightning at the onset of the monsoon season.

The best of the women who were sound asleep
on the top floors of mansions,
their bodies bare of any ornament,
were caught in the fire and wailed
in high pitched voices, ‘Alas, alas!’

struck down by the wielder of Vajra.

The burning mansions looked from afar
like the glowing groves of divine herbs
on the peaks of Himavān.

With the tops of the mansions
burning bright and engulfed in flames,
Laṅkā, in that night,
looked like Kiṃṡuka trees in flower.

babhūva laṅkā lōkāntē
bhrāntagrāha ivārṇavaḥ ॥
With the elephants and horses (running everywhere)
having been released by their keepers,
Laṅkā looked like the ocean at the time of apocalypse,
with all its crocodiles agitated and stirred.

aṡvaṃ muktaṃ gajō dṛṣṭvā

bhītō bhītaṃ gajaṃ dṛṣṭvā
kvacidaṡvō nivartatē ॥
In one place, an elephant shied away
from a stray horse that had been released.
In another place, a horse turned back
scared of an elephant that was also in fright.

ṡuṡubhē sa mahārṇavaḥ ।
chāyāsaṃsaktasalilō
lōhitōda ivārṇavaḥ ॥
The flames of Laṅkā, reflected
in the waters of the great ocean,
gave a bewitching illusion
that the waters of the ocean were crimson red. Vālmeeki, as we have noticed many a time in Bāla Kāṇḍa, is very visual and offers multiple 'camera angles'. Describing the war scene from within the middle of the battlefield or from the midst of the burning streets of Laṅkā is one thing, but zooming out the camera all the way out into the ocean, where there is no one that belongs to the story line, is quite another thing; a master stroke of visualization.

The city, set ablaze by the Vānaras,
looked like the earth burning
at the time of the worlds coming to an end.

ṡuṡruvē daṡayōjanam ॥
The loud wailing of the women folk,
suffocated by the smoke and scorched by the fire,
was heard as far away as ten Yōjanas.

with their bodies caught in the fire.

pṛthivīṃ cānvanādayat ॥
The clamor of the Vānaras and
the cries of the Rākshasas
reverberated in all the ten directions
and all over the earth and the oceans.

Both Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, the Mahātmas,
perfectly healed and well composed,
grabbed their respective splendid bows.

The twang of the great bow of Rāma
created a great din, terrifying the Rākshasas.

bhagavāniva saṅkruddhō
bhavō vēdamayaṃ dhanuḥ ॥
As he twanged the great bow,
Rāma looked like the enraged Bhagawān Bhava (Ṡiva)
twanging His bow, which was
nothing other than Vēdas taken form.

Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 75
In this Sarga, concluding that Rāvaṇa can no more go on the offense with Kumbhakarṇa having been slain, Sugreeva orders the Vānaras to set fire to Laṅkā, and they do so. Houses, mansions, towers tumble to the ground burned down. Weapons, clothes, precious gems and everything get consumed by the fire. Horses and elephants flee in confusion. Women wailed and flee with their children.
Meanwhile, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, their wounds completely healed, shower a rain of arrows on Laṅkā. The plans of Rākshasas to fight back are in shambles. Meanwhile, Sugreeva on the one hand, and Rāvaṇa on the other, instruct their respective armies to continue the fight without holding back. A great fight then ensues between Vānaras and Rākshasas.

hundreds of thousands of the dwellers of Laṅkā,
some reeling under intoxication
their eyes whirling and gait unsteady and
their clothes wrapped partly
around the bodies of their wives,
some becoming angry with the foe
and holding maces and spears in their hands,
some simply eating and drinking,
some happily sleeping on exquisite
beds along with their lovers, and
some running in fear taking
their children along with them.

The stately homes that only royal folk could afford,
which were majestic like mountains,
dazzling like the sun and
lofty as if they would touch the sun,
with their solemn appearance and designs,
furnished with couches and beds all over,
the rooms on their terraces
shaped like the moon and the half-moon,
their casements wrought in stylish designs,
studded with corals and diamonds,
and resounding with the
sounds of Krounca birds and peacocks,
music of Veeṇas and tinkling of ornaments
were consumed by the fire.

having been released by their keepers,
Laṅkā looked like the ocean at the time of apocalypse,
with all its crocodiles agitated and stirred.

In one place, an elephant shied away
from a stray horse that had been released.
In another place, a horse turned back
scared of an elephant that was also in fright.

lōhitōda ivārṇavaḥ ॥
The flames of Laṅkā, reflected
in the waters of the great ocean,
gave a bewitching illusion
that the waters of the ocean were crimson red. Vālmeeki, as we have noticed many a time in Bāla Kāṇḍa, is very visual and offers multiple 'camera angles'. Describing the war scene from within the middle of the battlefield or from the midst of the burning streets of Laṅkā is one thing, but zooming out the camera all the way out into the ocean, where there is no one that belongs to the story line, is quite another thing; a master stroke of visualization.

was heard as far away as ten Yōjanas.

reverberated in all the ten directions
and all over the earth and the oceans.

perfectly healed and well composed,
grabbed their respective splendid bows.

created a great din, terrifying the Rākshasas.

As he twanged the great bow,
Rāma looked like the enraged Bhagawān Bhava (Ṡiva)
twanging His bow, which was
nothing other than Vēdas taken form.

ரௌத்ரீவ ஸமபத்யத ॥
tēṣāṃ sannahyamānānām
siṃhanādaṃ ca kurvatām ।
ṡarvarī rākṣasēndrāṇām
raudrīva samapadyata ॥
With their preparations for the fight
and utterances of battle-cries,
the great Rākshasas turned that night
into one that brings the worlds to an end.

Oh ye bulls among Vānaras!
Go to the nearest entrances and put up a stiff fight.
Should you fail to do so wherever you are stationed,
you incur the offense of transgressing the king's order;
and shall be pounced upon and killed.

Rāvaṇa flew into a rage.

When he stretched his arms and body
(in that rage), he seemed to
push all the directions away.
It seemed as if Rudra's wrath
found a form in every limb of his body.

Then he, in rage, sent Kumbha and Nikumbha,
the sons of Kumbhakarṇa, supported
by many Rākshasas (to fight the enemy).

as instructed by Rāvaṇa.

'Go right away, roaring like lions, O Rākshasas!'

made an extremely fascinating sight
with its waters reflecting the light
from the high-rising fires from the burning houses.

With its flags and banners,
its superb swords and battle-axes,
its formidable horses, chariots and elephants,
its multitude of tumultuous cavalry,
its bright spears, maces, swords,
Prāsas, Tōmaras, and bows and
with its Prāsas glistening,
its thousands of bells jingling,
the arms of its warriors decked in gold,
its battle-axes flashed and waved,
its formidable weapons flung and
its bows mounted with arrows,
that Rākshasa army of terrific prowess
and pride looked formidable,
while the air became filled with the
fragrance of the flower garlands
and the scent of heady liquor.

Seeing that terrible force of Rākshasas
that was difficult to stand against,
packed with great warriors advancing,
the Vānara army was shaken and let off loud shouts.

And that great Rākshasa army leaped forward
with all the speed towards the enemy forces,
like moths to the fire.

that could strike like thunderbolts,
polished by constant handling,
doubled the magnificence of the Rākshasa forces.

The one who attacked the others

The one who struck down the others

was himself insulted by another.

was himself bitten by another.

Before another responded, ‘Yes, I shall',
yet another one struck him down.
Each one yelled at the other,
‘Don’t you worry, just wait right there’.

And that extremely fierce fight continued
between Vānaras and Rākshasas
with a tumultuous wielding of
huge Prāsas, Yashṭis, spears and swords.
But then, the Ṡastras were brought to naught and
fighters were stripped of their weapons and armors.

The Rākshasas struck down the Vānaras by sevens and tens.
And the Vānaras downed the Rākshasas likewise.

balaṃ rākṣasamālambya
vānarāḥ paryavārayan ॥
Vānaras surrounded and caught the Rākshasa forces
whose clothes and hair were in disorder
and whose armor and banners were smashed.

ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே பஞ்சஸப்ததிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
