āpatantaṃ ca samprēkṣya
kumbhō vānarayūthapam ।
bhruvōrvivyādha bāṇābhyām
ulkābhyāmiva kuñjaram ॥
Seeing the Vānara chief leaping on him,
Kumbha struck him on the brows with arrows,
like an elephant would be with torches.

pidhāya rudhirōkṣitē ।
sālamāsannamēkēna
parijagrāha pāṇinā ॥
The blood that flowed covered his eyes.
Aṅgada covered the blood-wet eyes with one hand,
and with the other snatched a nearby Sāla tree.

unmamātha yathā gajaḥ ॥
Wrapping his arm around its trunk,
pressing it against his chest
and bending forward a little,
he pulled it by the roots like an elephant does.

samutsṛjantaṃ vēgēna
paṡyatāṃ sarvarakṣasām ॥
Then, with all the speed,
he hurled that tree, which
resembled the flagstaff of Indra
and the mountain Mēru,
with all the Rākshasas watching.

saptabhiḥ kāyabhēdanaiḥ ।
aṅgadō vivyathē'bhīkṣṇam
papāta ca mumōha ca ॥
He (Kumbha) broke it with seven
sharp arrows that could tear apart anybody.
Aṅgada was extremely pained by it.
He fell down in a swoon.

rāghavāya nyavēdayan ॥
Seeing Aṅgada, against whom no one could stand,
struggle like one drowning in an ocean,
the prominent Vānaras reported it to Rāghava.

vāliputraṃ mahāhavē ।
vyādidēṡa hariṡrēṣṭhān
jāmbavatpramukhāṃstataḥ ॥
Hearing that the son of Vāli was in trouble
in that great battle, Rāma ordered
chief Vānaras like Jāmbavān and others
(to go to the rescue of Aṅgada).

ṡrutvā rāmasya ṡāsanam ।
abhipētuḥ susaṅkruddhāḥ
kumbhamudyatakārmukam ॥
Hearing the command of Rāma,
those extremely angry tigers among Vānaras
rushed to Kumbha who was ready with his bow.

aṅgadaṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ॥
Those bulls among Vānaras,
taking trees and rocks in their hands
and with their eyes blood-red in anger,
rushed to the rescue of Aṅgada.

Jāmbavān , Sushēṇa and the Vānara Vēgadarsi,
in their wrath, dashed on to
the valiant son of Kumbhakarṇa.

nagēnēva jalāṡayam ॥
Seeing the great Vānaras of
immense strength rush up on him,
he cast a cover of a volley of arrows on them,
making them look like a lake covered by trees.

Having been caught in the barrage of those arrows,
the mighty Vānaras could not find an escape
any more than a great ocean can, edged against the shore.

tāṃstu dṛṣṭvā harigaṇān
ṡaravṛṣṭibirarditān ।
aṅgadaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā
bhrātṛjaṃ plavagēṡvaraḥ ।
abidudrāva sugrīvaḥ
kumbhakarṇātmajaṃ raṇē ।
ṡailasānucaraṃ nāgam
vēgavāniva kēsarī ॥
Seeing those Vānara contingents
oppressed by that shower of arrows,
Sugreeva, the King of the Vānaras,
keeping his nephew Aṅgada behind him,
dashed towards the son of Kumbhakarṇa in that fight,
as a swift lion pursues an elephant
roaming on the mountain side.

utpāṭya ca mahāvṛkṣān
aṡvakarṇān dhavān bahūn ।
anyāṃṡca vividhān vṛkṣān
cikṣēpa ca mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara pulled by the roots
many great trees like Aṡwakarṇa, Dhava,
and many other kinds of trees, and hurled them.

tāṃ chādayantīmākāṡam
vṛkṣavṛṣṭiṃ durāsadām ।

cicchēda niṡitaiḥ ṡaraiḥ ॥
That formidable shower of trees
which seemed to obscure the sky
was instantly smashed by the
son of Kumbhakarṇa, with his sharp arrows.

கும்பேந நிஸிதை: ஸரை: ।
ஆசிதாஸ்தே த்ருமா ரேஜு:

abhilakṣēṇa tīvrēṇa
kumbhēna niṡitaiḥ ṡaraiḥ ।
ācitāstē drumā rējuḥ
yathā ghōrāḥ ṡataghnayaḥ ॥
Those trees, with Kumbha’s sharp and penetrating arrows
that hit their their target without fail stuck in them,
shone like frightful Ṡataghnis (emitting sparks).

த்ருஷ்ட்வா கும்பேந வீர்யவாந் ।

drumavarṣaṃ tu tacchinnam
dṛṣṭvā kumbhēna vīryavān ।
vānarādhipatiḥ ṡrīmān
mahāsattvō na vivyathē ॥
The blessed, valorous lord of Vānaras
of extraordinary power did not
lose even an iota of his spirit
on seeing that shower of trees shattered by Kumbha.

ஸஹமாநஸ்து தாந் ஸராந் ।
கும்பஸ்ய தநுராக்ஷிப்ய

sa vidyamānaḥ sahasā
sahamānastu tān ṡarān ।
kumbhasya dhanurākṣipya
babhañjēndradhanuṣprabham ॥
He managed to endure the arrows
that struck him, and quickly
snatched the bow of Kumbha
which shone like the rainbow, and broke it.

க்ருத்வா கர்ம ஸுதுஷ்கரம் ।

avaplutya tataḥ ṡīghram
kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ।
abravīt kupitaḥ kumbham
bhagnaṡṛṅgamiva dvipam ॥
After doing this near-impossible feat,
he sprang up again and said these words in rage to Kumbha,
who was like an elephant whose tusk had been broken:

bāṇavēgavadadbhutam ।
sannatiṡca prabhāvaṡca
tava vā rāvaṇasya vā ॥
O elder brother of Nikumbha!
It is only you, besides Rāvaṇa, who
can shoot arrows at such a marvelous speed,
hold such an esteem (among Rākshasas) and
possesses such a prowess.

pitaraṃ balavattaram ॥
You are an equal of Prahlāda, Bali,
the slayer of Vṛtra, Kubēra and Varuṇa.
You are the one son who has truly inherited
the extraordinary strength of your father.

vikramasva mahābuddhē
karmāṇi mama paṡya ca ॥
O subduer of foe, of great arms wielding a bow!
You are the only one whom Dēvas cannot overpower
just as worries cannot one
who has won over his senses!
Fight on, O sagacious one,
I would like to see more of your feats.

Your uncle puts a check on Dēvas and Dānavas
with the power of the boons he was granted.
Kumbhakarṇa puts a check on Suras and Asuras
with his own valor.

dhanuṣīndrajitastulyaḥ
pratāpē rāvaṇasya ca ।
tvamadya rakṣasāṃ lōkē
ṡrēṣṭhō'si balavīryataḥ ॥
You are an equal of Indrajit in wielding the bow,
and Rāvaṇa in prowess.
You are the best of all the Rākshasas today,
in strength and valor.

adya bhūtāni paṡyantu
ṡakraṡambarayōriva ॥
Let all beings witness today
a stunning and extraordinary fight
between you and me in this battle,
the likes of the one that occurred
between Ṡakra and Ṡambara.

darṡitaṃ cāstrakauṡalam ।
pātitā harivīrāṡca
tvayā vai bhīmavikramāḥ ॥
You, of terrific prowess,
have done feats that are unequaled,
displayed your mastery of weapons and
struck down the Vānara Veeras.

நாஸி வீர மயா ஹத: ।

nāsi vīra mayā hataḥ ।
kṛtakarmā pariṡrāntō
viṡrāntaḥ paṡya mē balam ॥
I do not want to be blamed, O Veera,
for slaying you, one who is exhausted
with all that you have done thus far.
Take rest and come again to see my strength.

பாஹுப்யாம் ஜக்ருஹே ததா ॥
tēna sugrīvavākyēna
sāvamānēna mānitaḥ ।
agnērājyāhutasyēva
tējastasyābhyavardhata ।
tataḥ kumbhastu sugrīvam
bāhubhyāṃ jagṛhē tadā ॥
Those words of generous insult by Sugreeva
only helped to boost his power,
like ghee poured into fire only enhances it.
And then Kumbha caught Sugreeva
with both his hands about him.

விஸ்ருஜந்தௌ பரிஸ்ரமாத் ॥
gajāvivāvītamadau
niṡvasantau muhurmuhuḥ ।
anyōnyagātragrathitau
gharṣantāvitarētaram ।
sadhūmāṃ mukhatō jvālām
visṛjantau pariṡramāt ॥
(They fought) like elephants still in rut,
panting repeatedly, rubbing against each other,
each twisting the other's body into a knot,
letting off fumes and vapors
from their mouths, out of exhaustion.

cukṣubhē varuṇālayaḥ ॥
The earth sank under the impact of their stamping.
The ocean went into a turmoil with lashing billows.

sugrīvō lavaṇāmbhasi ।
pātayāmāsa vēgēna
darṡayannudadhēstalam ॥
Then Sugreeva lifted him and
swiftly threw him into the salty waters,
showing him the floor of the ocean.

visasarpa samantataḥ ॥
With Kumbha thrown (into the ocean),
a huge mass of water, as big as Vindhya and Mandara,
rose up and flowed all around.

Kumbha sprang up immediately,
rushed upon Sugreeva and
struck him in wrath on the chest
with his fist that had the force of the Vajra.

His skin cracked and he bled profusely.
The huge momentum of the fist was ultimately
curtailed by the rib cage (of Sugreeva).

Nevertheless, with the force of its impact,
there arose huge and bright sparks, just as
flames arose when the Mēru mountain
was struck by the Vajra.

ravimaṇḍalasaprabham ।
sa muṣṭiṃ pātayāmāsa
kumbhasyōrasi vīryavān ॥
Struck by him thus, Sugreeva,
a bull among Vānaras, of tremendous strength,
doubled his fist, hard as a diamond,
which blazed like the orb of the sun
emitting thousands of sparks,
and landed a blow on Kumbha’s chest with it.

by the bull among Vānaras of fierce prowess,

dashed towards the son of Kumbhakarṇa in that fight,
as a swift lion pursues an elephant
roaming on the mountain side.

can shoot arrows at such a marvelous speed,
hold such an esteem (among Rākshasas) and
possesses such a prowess.

who has won over his senses!

I would like to see more of your feats.

with his own valor.

You are an equal of Indrajit in wielding the bow,
and Rāvaṇa in prowess.
You are the best of all the Rākshasas today,
in strength and valor.

Those words of generous insult by Sugreeva
only helped to boost his power,
like ghee poured into fire only enhances it.
And then Kumbha caught Sugreeva
with both his hands about him.

visṛjantau pariṡramāt ॥
(They fought) like elephants still in rut,
panting repeatedly, rubbing against each other,
each twisting the other's body into a knot,
letting off fumes and vapors
from their mouths, out of exhaustion.

The earth sank under the impact of their stamping.
The ocean went into a turmoil with lashing billows.

darṡayannudadhēstalam ॥
Then Sugreeva lifted him and
swiftly threw him into the salty waters,
showing him the floor of the ocean.

With Kumbha thrown (into the ocean),
a huge mass of water, as big as Vindhya and Mandara,
rose up and flowed all around.

Kumbha sprang up immediately,
rushed upon Sugreeva and
struck him in wrath on the chest
with his fist that had the force of the Vajra.

His skin cracked and he bled profusely.
The huge momentum of the fist was ultimately
curtailed by the rib cage (of Sugreeva).

Nevertheless, with the force of its impact,
there arose huge and bright sparks, just as
flames arose when the Mēru mountain
was struck by the Vajra.

sa tatrābhihatastēna
sugrīvō vānararṣabhaḥ ।
muṣṭiṃ saṃvartayāmāsa
vajrakalpaṃ mahābalaḥ ।
arcissahasravikacam
ravimaṇḍalasaprabham ।
sa muṣṭiṃ pātayāmāsa
kumbhasyōrasi vīryavān ॥
Struck by him thus, Sugreeva,
a bull among Vānaras, of tremendous strength,
doubled his fist, hard as a diamond,
which blazed like the orb of the sun
emitting thousands of sparks,
and landed a blow on Kumbha’s chest with it.

nipapāta tadā kumbhō
gatārciriva pāvakaḥ ॥
Hurt severely by that blow,
Kumbha reeled and fell down then,
looking like a fire that has been put out.

நிபபாதாஸு ராக்ஷஸ: ।
லோஹிதாங்க இவாகாஸாத்

nipapātāṡu rākṣasaḥ ।
lōhitāṅga ivākāṡāt
dīptaraṡmiryadṛcchayā ॥
Struck down by that blow of the fist,
the Rākshasa fell down, as if he were
Mars of bright rays that fell down
from the sky, by the will of Providence.

bhagnasyōrasi muṣṭinā ।
babhau rudrābhipannasya
yathā rūpaṃ gavāṃ patēḥ ॥
The body of Kumbha, with its
breast shattered by (the blow from) the fist,
shone like the sun (and its orb) forsaken by Rudra.

ப்லவங்கமாநாம்ருஷபேண யுத்தே ।

tasmin hatē bhīmaparākramēṇa
plavaṅgamānāmṛṣabhēṇa yuddhē ।
mahī saṡailā savanā cacāla
bhayaṃ ca rakṣāṃsyadhikaṃ vivēṡa ॥
When he was thus slain in the fight
by the bull among Vānaras of fierce prowess,
the earth along with its hills and forests shook,
and the Rākshasas were consumed by more fear than ever.

ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஷட்ஸப்ததிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
