Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 79
In this Sarga, the Rākshasas led by Makarāksha attack the Vānaras. Unable to challenge their assault, the Vānaras flee. Then Rāma puts a check to the Rākshasas by showering a volley of arrows. On seeing the Rākshasas thus restrained, Makarāksha becomes furious and challenges Rāma to a duel, bragging about his strength.
A fierce fight ensues between Rāma and Makarāksha. Rāma breaks the bow and chariot of Makarāksha and strikes down the horses and charioteer. Makarāksha hurls a powerful spear, which he had obtained from Rudra, at Rāma. Rāma shatters it to pieces with his arrows. Finally, Rāma strikes down Makarāksha with the Astra of Agni.

āplutya sahasā sarvē
yōddhukāmā vyavasthitāḥ ॥
As soon as they saw Makarāksha set out,
the Vānara chiefs sprang up and
became ready for the fight.

tadyuddhaṃ rōmaharṣaṇam ।
niṡācaraiḥ plavaṅgānām
dēvānāṃ dānavairiva ॥
Then there ensued a great fight,
that made one's hair stand on its end,
between the Night-Rovers and the Vānaras,
like the one between Dēvas and Dānavas.

tadā kapiniṡācarāḥ ॥
Hurling trees and spears,
throwing rocks and Parighas,
the Vānaras and Night-Rovers
then battered each other.

நிர்காதைஸ்சாபரே ததா ।
கதநம் கபிவீராணாம்
சக்ருஸ்தே ரஜநீசரா: ॥
ṡaktikhaḍgagadākuntaiḥ
tōmaraiṡca niṡācarāḥ ।
paṭṭiṡairbhindipālaiṡca
bāṇapātaiḥ samantataḥ ।
pāṡamudgaradaṇḍaiṡca
nirghātaiṡcāparē tadā ।
kadanaṃ kapivīrāṇām
cakrustē rajanīcarāḥ ॥
The Night-Rovers fought with the
Vānara warriors everywhere
striking them down with
Ṡaktis, swords, maces, Kuntas,
Tōmaras, Paṭṭisas, Bhindipālas, arrows,
nooses, Mudgaras, rods and other weapons.

கரபுத்ரேண வாநரா: ।

kharaputrēṇa vānarāḥ ।
sambhrāntamanasaḥ sarvē
dudruvurbhayapīḍitāḥ ॥
Harried by the volley of arrows
of the son of Khara, all the Vānaras
were bewildered and fled, oppressed by fear.

tān dṛṣṭvā rākṣasāḥ sarvē
dravamāṇān valīmukhān ।
nēdustē siṃhavaddhṛṣṭā
rākṣasā jitakāṡinaḥ ॥
Seeing the Vānaras flee,
the Rākshasas roared like lions in delight,
basking in the glory of victory.

rāmastān vārayāmāsa
ṡaravarṣēṇa rākṣasān ॥
Seeing that the Vānaras were fleeing everywhere,
Rāma, with a shower of arrows,
put a check on the Rākshasas.

makarākṣō niṡācaraḥ ।
krōdhānalasamāviṣṭō
vacanaṃ cēdamabravīt ॥
On seeing the Rākshasas held at bay,
the Night-Rover Makarāksha,
gripped by a fiery rage, said these words:

த்வந்த்வயுத்தம் ததாமி தே ।

tiṣṭha rāma mayā sārdham
dvandvayuddhaṃ dadāmi tē ।
tyājayiṣyāmi tē prāṇān
dhanurmuktaiḥ ṡitaiḥ ṡaraiḥ ॥
Stay right there and engage with me in a duel!
I shall extricate the life force out of you
with the sharp arrows that are let loose from my bow.

pitaraṃ hatavān mama ।
madagrataḥ svakarmastham
dṛṣṭvā rōṣō'bhivardhatē ॥
My outrage swells as I see
the one who killed my father in Daṇḍaka Araṇya
stand right in front of me to gain his own ends.

durātman mama rāghava ।
yanmayā'si na dṛṣṭastvam
tasmin kālē mahāvanē ॥
The fact that I did not set my eyes on you
at that time in that great Vana,
burns every limb of mine, O evil one, O Rāghava!

diṣṭyā'si darṡanaṃ rāma
mama tvaṃ prāptavāniha ।
kāṅkṣitō'si kṣudhārtasya
siṃhasyēvētarō mṛgaḥ ॥
By the grace of Providence, O Rāma,
I get to see you here, whom I have been seeking
like a starving lion seeking deer!

yē tvayā nihatā vīrāḥ
saha taiṡca samēṣyasi ॥
Dispatched by the force of my arrows,
you shall go to the abode of the king of the dead,
and join the heroes you slew.

ṡṛṇu rāma vacō mama ।
paṡyantu sakalā lōkāḥ
tvāṃ māṃ caiva raṇājirē ॥
There is no need to say it in so many ways;
listen to my words, O Rāma:
'may all the worlds see (the spectacle of)
you and me engaged in a duel.'

abhyastaṃ yēna vā rāma
vartatāṃ tēna vā mṛdham ॥
Let the fight be with Astras
or mace or with bare hands,
whatever you have practiced, O Rāma!

rāmō daṡarathātmajaḥ ।
abravīt prahasan vākyam
uttarōttaravādinam ॥
Hearing those words of Makarāksha,
who went on to blabber without an end,
Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha
said these words, laughing:

பஹூந்யஸத்ருஸாநி து ।
ந ரணே ஸக்யதே ஜேதும்

katthasē kiṃ vṛthā rakṣō
bahūnyasadṛṡāni tu ।
na raṇē ṡakyatē jētum
vinā yuddhēna vāgbalāt ॥
Why do you waste your breath
bragging so much about yourself, O Rākshasa!
You cannot win a battle without fighting,
with the mere force of your words.

ரக்ஷஸாம் த்வத்பிதா ச ய: ।

rakṣasāṃ tvatpitā ca yaḥ ।
triṡirā dūṣaṇaṡcaiva
daṇḍakē nihatā mayā ॥
Fourteen thousand Rākshasas
including your father,
and also Triṡira and Dūshaṇa
were slain by me in Daṇḍaka.

svāṡitāstava māṃsēna
gṛdhragōmāyuvāyasāḥ ।
bhaviṣyantyadya vai pāpa
tīkṣṇatuṇḍanakhāṅkurāḥ ॥
Vultures, jackals and crows,
with sharp beaks and nails
should have a nice meal out of your flesh
today, you sinful one!

rāghavāya raṇājirē ॥
On this retort by Rāghava,
the son of Khara, the Night-Rover,
released a volley of arrows
on Rāghava, in that battlefield.

rāmaṡcicchēda naikadhā ।
nipēturbhuvi tē chinnā
rukmapuṅkhāḥ sahasraṡaḥ ॥
Rāma cut those arrows into pieces
with his own shower of arrows.
And they, with gold rings, fell on the ground,
shivered into thousands of bits.

samētyānyōnyamōjasā ।
rakṣasaḥ kharaputrasya
sūnōrdaṡarathasya ca ॥
Thus ensued a great fight between
the Rākshasa, the son of Khara,
and the son of Daṡaratha, as they
collided with each other with all their power.

jīmūtayōrivākāṡē
ṡabdō jyātalayōstadā ।
dhanurmuktaḥ svanōtkṛṣṭaḥ
ṡrūyatē ca raṇājirē ॥
In that battlefield,
the sound of the arrows as they left the bow,
mixed with the sound of the bowstring
and the thud of the striking palms,
filled the sky, like thunder.

கிந்நராஸ்ச மஹோரகா: ।

kinnarāṡca mahōragāḥ ।
antarikṣagatāḥ sarvē
draṣṭukāmāstadadbhutam ॥
All the Dēvas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras and
the great Uragas crowded in the sky
to see that amazing spectacle.

த்விகுணம் வர்ததே பரம் ।
க்ருதப்ரதிக்ருதாந்யோந்யம்

dviguṇaṃ vardhatē param ।
kṛtapratikṛtānyōnyam
kurutāṃ tau raṇājirē ॥
Their strength doubled as
they battered each other's body and
as they responded to each other's challenge
in that battlefield.

rākṣasastvacchinadraṇē ।
rakṣōmuktāṃstu rāmō vai
naikadhā prācchinaccharaiḥ ॥
The volley of arrows shot by Rāma
were smashed by the Rākshasa and
those released by the Rākshasa were similarly
shattered into many, many tiny bits,
by the arrows of Rāma, in that battle.

திஸஸ்ச ப்ரதிஸஸ்ததா ।
ஸஞ்சந்நா வஸுதா சைவ

bāṇaughairvitatāḥ sarvā
diṡaṡca pradiṡastathā ।
sańchannā vasudhā caiva
samantānna prakāṡatē ॥
The four quarters and the intermediate directions
were all obscured by that deluge of arrows,
and the earth everywhere was covered by them,
becoming scarcely visible.

தநுஸ்சிச்சேத ரக்ஷஸ: ।

dhanuṡcicchēda rakṣasaḥ ।
aṣṭābhiratha nārācaiḥ
sūtaṃ vivyādha rāghavaḥ ॥
Rāghava of mighty arm, infuriated,
broke down the bow of the Rākshasa
and then with eight Nārāca arrows
struck down his charioteer.

ஹத்வா அஸ்வாநபாதயத் ।

bhittvā rathaṃ ṡarai rāmō
hatvā aṡvānapātayat ।
virathō vasudhāsthaḥ sa
makarākṣō niṡācaraḥ ॥
Rāma, with his arrows, broke his chariot
and struck down and killed the horses.
Losing his chariot, Makarāksha, the Night-Rover,
stood on the bare ground.

ஸூலம் ஜக்ராஹ பாணிநா ।

tattiṣṭhadvasudhāṃ rakṣaḥ
ṡūlaṃ jagrāha pāṇinā ।
trāsanaṃ sarvabhūtānām
yugāntāgnisamaprabham ॥
That Rākshasa, standing there
holding a spear in his hand,
blazed like the Fire of Dissolution,
terrifying all the creatures.

ருத்ரவத்தம் பயம்கரம் ।

யம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தேவதா: ஸர்வா
பயார்தா வித்ருதா திஸ: ॥
duravāpaṃ mahacchūlam
rudravattaṃ bhayaṃkaram ।
jājvalyamānamākāṡē
saṃhārāstramivāparam ।
yaṃ dṛṣṭvā dēvatāḥ sarvā
bhayārtā vidrutā diṡaḥ ॥
That ferocious and great spear,
that shone like the Astra of Death in the sky,
extremely difficult to obtain,
at the very sight of which even
all the Dēvas fled in terror
in every direction in the past,
was given by Rudra.

prajvalantaṃ niṡācaraḥ ।
sa krōdhātprāhiṇōttasmai
rāghavāya mahātmanē ॥
The Night-Rover whirled that great blazing spear
and hurled it at Rāghava in fury.

kharaputrakarāccyutam ।
bāṇaistu tribhirākāṡē
ṡūlaṃ cicchēda rāghavaḥ ॥
Rāghava broke off that blazing spear
with three arrows while it was
still in flight in mid-air,
having left the hand of Khara's son.

திவ்யஹாடகமண்டித: ।

divyahāṭakamaṇḍitaḥ ।
vyaṡīryata mahōlkēva
rāmabāṇārditō bhuvi ॥
That spear, shining
in its splendid gold cover,
shattered into many pieces
struck by the arrows of Rāma,
fell on the ground like a meteor.

ராமேணாக்லிஷ்டகர்மணா ।
ஸாது ஸாத்விதி பூதாநி

tacchūlaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ।
sādhu sādhviti bhūtāni
vyāharanti nabhōgatā ॥
On seeing that spear destroyed by
Rāma, who does everything with ease,
all creatures that had assembled in the sky
applauded, saying, ‘Astounding!’

taṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ ṡūlam
makarākṣō niṡācaraḥ ।
muṣṭimudyamya kākutstham
tiṣṭha tiṣṭhēti cābravīt ॥
Seeing that spear destroyed,
Makarāksha, the Night-Rover,
raised his doubled fist and
rushed upon Kākutstha, saying,
'stay right there, (here I come)!'

girimiva vajrahataṃ yathā vikīrṇam ॥
The Dēvas were in extreme joy,
seeing that Night-Rover, the son of Khara,
shattered into pieces, struck by the force of
the arrows of King Daṡaratha's son,
like a mountain struck by Vajra.

Thus concludes the seventy ninth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 79
In this Sarga, the Rākshasas led by Makarāksha attack the Vānaras. Unable to challenge their assault, the Vānaras flee. Then Rāma puts a check to the Rākshasas by showering a volley of arrows. On seeing the Rākshasas thus restrained, Makarāksha becomes furious and challenges Rāma to a duel, bragging about his strength.
A fierce fight ensues between Rāma and Makarāksha. Rāma breaks the bow and chariot of Makarāksha and strikes down the horses and charioteer. Makarāksha hurls a powerful spear, which he had obtained from Rudra, at Rāma. Rāma shatters it to pieces with his arrows. Finally, Rāma strikes down Makarāksha with the Astra of Agni.

I shall extricate the life force out of you
with the sharp arrows that are let loose from my bow.

with the mere force of your words.

the sound of the arrows as they left the bow,
mixed with the sound of the bowstring
and the thud of the striking palms,
filled the sky, like thunder.

to see that amazing spectacle.

Their strength doubled as
they battered each other's body and
as they responded to each other's challenge
in that battlefield.

The volley of arrows shot by Rāma
were smashed by the Rākshasa and
those released by the Rākshasa were similarly
shattered into many, many tiny bits,
by the arrows of Rāma, in that battle.

The four quarters and the intermediate directions
were all obscured by that deluge of arrows,
and the earth everywhere was covered by them,
becoming scarcely visible.

struck down his charioteer.

Rāma, with his arrows, broke his chariot

Losing his chariot, Makarāksha, the Night-Rover,
stood on the bare ground.

That ferocious and great spear,
that shone like the Astra of Death in the sky,
extremely difficult to obtain,
at the very sight of which even
all the Dēvas fled in terror
in every direction in the past,
was given by Rudra.

ப்ரஜ்வலந்தம் நிஸாசர: ।
ஸ க்ரோதாத்ப்ராஹிணோத்தஸ்மை
ராகவாய மஹாத்மநே ॥
vibhrāmya tu mahacchūlam
prajvalantaṃ niṡācaraḥ ।
sa krōdhātprāhiṇōttasmai
rāghavāya mahātmanē ॥
The Night-Rover whirled that great blazing spear
and hurled it at Rāghava in fury.

bāṇaistu tribhirākāṡē
ṡūlaṃ cicchēda rāghavaḥ ॥
Rāghava broke off that blazing spear
with three arrows while it was
still in flight in mid-air,
having left the hand of Khara's son.

divyahāṭakamaṇḍitaḥ ।
vyaṡīryata mahōlkēva
rāmabāṇārditō bhuvi ॥
That spear, shining
in its splendid gold cover,
shattered into many pieces
struck by the arrows of Rāma,
fell on the ground like a meteor.

tacchūlaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ।
sādhu sādhviti bhūtāni
vyāharanti nabhōgatā ॥
On seeing that spear destroyed by
Rāma, who does everything with ease,
all creatures that had assembled in the sky
applauded, saying, ‘Astounding!’

மகராக்ஷோ நிஸாசர: ।

taṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ ṡūlam
makarākṣō niṡācaraḥ ।
muṣṭimudyamya kākutstham
tiṣṭha tiṣṭhēti cābravīt ॥
Seeing that spear destroyed,
Makarāksha, the Night-Rover,
raised his doubled fist and
rushed upon Kākutstha, saying,
'stay right there, (here I come)!'

prahasya raghunandanaḥ ।
pāvakāstraṃ tatō rāmaḥ
sandadhē tu ṡarāsanē ॥
Seeing him thus dash towards him,
the delight of Raghus laughed and
mounted the Astra of Agni on his bow.

காகுத்ஸ்தேந ததா ரணே ।

tēnāstrēṇa hataṃ rakṣaḥ
kākutsthēna tadā raṇē ।
sańchinnahṛdayaṃ tatra
papāta ca mamāra ca ॥
Struck down by Kākutstha with that Astra in the battle,
the Rākshasa, with his heart shattered into pieces,
fell down dead.

லங்காமேவாப்யதாவந்த

makarākṣasya pātanam ।
laṅkāmēvābhyadhāvanta
rāmabāṇabhayārditāḥ ॥
Seeing Makarāksha thus felled down,
all the Rākshasas fled to
Laṅkā, terrified of Rāma’s arrows.

ரஜநிசரம் நிஹதம் கராத்மஜம் தம் ।
ப்ரதத்ருஸுரத தேவதா: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டா
கிரிமிவ வஜ்ரஹதம் யதா விகீர்ணம் ॥
daṡarathanṛpaputrabāṇavēgai
rajanicaraṃ nihataṃ kharātmajaṃ tam ।
pradadṛṡuratha dēvatāḥ prahṛṣṭā
girimiva vajrahataṃ yathā vikīrṇam ॥
The Dēvas were in extreme joy,
seeing that Night-Rover, the son of Khara,
shattered into pieces, struck by the force of
the arrows of King Daṡaratha's son,
like a mountain struck by Vajra.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகோநாஸீதிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
