Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 80
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa becomes furious hearing that Makarāksha is slain. He instructs Indrajit to head to the battlefield. Indrajit, after offering oblations to Agni and propitiating Dēvas and Dānavas, heads to the battlefield, following the command of his father.
Using his magical powers, Indrajit ascends to the sky along with his chariot and creates smoke that obfuscates the sky. He then shoots arrows, staying invisible. Unable to locate where Indrajit is, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa shoot arrows into the sky in every direction, and then in the direction in which they see arrows coming from.
Indrajit continues to shoot arrows at Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and the Vānaras. Many Vānaras fall dead. Lakshmaṇa suggests to Rāma that he himself would deploy Brahma's Astra and destroy the entire Rākshasa race. Rāma tells that the entire race of Rākshasas should not be destroyed because of the transgression of just one of them. Rāma then sets himself ready to put an end to Indrajit, with his powerful Astras.

Go and slay those those two brothers,
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, of extraordinary valor,
either being visible to them or hiding yourself.
You possess superior strength, in every which way.

You vanquished in fight even Indra,
who is unequaled in what he can do;
why would you not be able to
slay a mere human in fight,
when you set your eyes on him?

Thus told by his father, the Lord of Rākshasas,
Indrajit, obeying his orders,
offered oblations to Agni on
the Yajña grounds in a customary manner.

and ladles made of iron were used.
Ṡarapatras, Vibheetaka twigs and
ladles made of iron
are used in black magic rituals. These Ṡlōkas are the same as Ṡlōkas 6.73.19 through 6.73.22.

from that great fire, serving
as an omen presaging victory.

and with animal figurines,
full moon and half-moon designs
splendidly carved on it,
it was dazzling in appearance.

huge ring of gold around it.

Protected by it (the chariot) and
by the power of Brahma's Astra,
he, the son of Rāvaṇa, of immense strength,
was impregnable against any assault.

chanting Mantras specially used by Rākshasas,
and set to make himself invisible, he said:

hatvā rāmaṃ salakṣmaṇam ।
kariṣyē paramaprītim
I shall slay this very day those two
whose exile in the Vana is a mere pretext,
and give the gift of victory to my father Rāvaṇa.
Slaying Rāma and Lakshmaṇa and
ridding the earth of Vānaras,
I shall make him extremely happy.

The cruel foe of Indra,
armed with bow and sharp arrows,
angrily rushed to the scene of battle
under the prompting of the Ten-Necked.

He beheld the warriors (Rāma and Lakshmaṇa)
of extraordinary valor
who looked like three-headed serpents,
discharging volleys of arrows
from the midst of Vānaras. The beautiful imagery used back in Bāla Kāṇḍa (1.22.7) comes again here. With quiver raised above one shoulder and the bow raised above the other, and their heads in the middle, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa look like three-headed serpents.

like a cloud does with a torrent of rain.

Rāma and Lakshmaṇa with sharp arrows.

Feeling the impact of the force of those arrows,
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa mounted their arrows on the bow
and infused them with the power of celestial Astras.

ṡarajālairmahābalau ।
tamastraiḥ sūryasaṅkāṡaiḥ
naiva saspṛṡatuḥ ṡaraiḥ ॥
Then those two of immense strength,
blotted the entire sky with their volleys
of arrows that blazed like the sun.
But he (Indrajit) was not even
so much as touched by those arrows.

He, the powerful one, then created dark smoke
(with his magical powers) that looked like a dense fog, obfuscating the sky and making the cardinals disappear.

Neither the thud of bowstring hitting the palm
nor the clatter of wheels and horse-hooves could be heard,
nor could he himself be seen.

He of mighty arm, in that intense darkness,
sent a stunning torrent of Nārāca arrows.

In his great wrath, the son of Rāvaṇa,
who had obtained many a boon,
struck every limb of Rāma
with arrows that burned like the sun.

tigmān mumucatuḥ ṡarān ॥
Those two tigers among men,
assailed by arrows that fell on them
like showers on a mountain,
then shot sharp arrows with gold rings.

rāvaṇiṃ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ ।
nikṛtya patagā bhūmau
pētustē ṡōṇitōkṣitāḥ ॥
Those arrows, sped by the Kaṅka feathers,
reached Rāvaṇa's son in the sky, gored him,
and fell down on the ground, daubed with blood.

As the volleys of arrows (of Indrajit)
began to oppress them extremely,
they shot Bhalla arrows at them and
broke them off in mid-air into many bits.

in every direction in his chariot,
continued the assault with his sharp arrows
on the two sons of Daṡaratha.

Struck by those arrows with golden rings
that were shot with extraordinary nimbleness
the sons of Daṡaratha looked like
Kiṃṡuka trees in full bloom.

No one could tell where he was,
how fast he was moving,
where his bow and arrows were,
or anything else about him,
any more than one can tell
where the sun is when
masses of clouds blot the sky.

6.80.37 ஈ லக்ஷ்மணஸ்து ஸுஸங்க்ருத்தோ
ப்ராதரம் வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
ப்ராஹ்மமஸ்த்ரம் ப்ரயோக்ஷ்யாமி
வதார்தம் ஸர்வரக்ஷஸாம் ॥
lakṣmaṇastu susaṅkruddhō
bhrātaraṃ vākyamabravīt ।
brāhmamastraṃ prayōkṣyāmi
vadhārthaṃ sarvarakṣasām ॥
With that, Lakshmaṇa became outraged
and said to his brother,
'I shall deploy Brahma's Astra
and destroy all the Rākshasas!'
6.80.38 அ

லக்ஷ்மணம் ஸுபலக்ஷணம் ॥
tamuvāca tatō rāmō
lakṣmaṇaṃ ṡubhalakṣaṇam ॥
Then Rāma said to Lakshmaṇa
who bore all auspicious marks on his person:

ப்ராஞ்ஜலிம் ஸரணாகதம் ।
பலாயந்தம் ப்ரமத்தம் வா
ந த்வம் ஹந்துமிஹார்ஹஸி ॥
naikasya hētō rakṣāṃsi
pṛthivyāṃ hantu marhasi ।
ayudhyamānaṃ pracchannam
prāñjaliṃ ṡaraṇāgatam ।
palāyantaṃ pramattaṃ vā
na tvaṃ hantumihārhasi ॥
You should not slay all the Rākshasas on the earth
because of the transgression of one.
You should not slay one
who does not put up a fight,
or one who hides oneself or flees
or is not on one's own guard,
or surrenders oneself with palms joined.

6.80.40 ஈ அஸ்யைவ து வதே யத்நம்
கரிஷ்யாவோ மஹாபல ।
ஆதேக்ஷ்யாவோ மஹாவேகாந்
அஸ்த்ராநாஸீவிஷோபமாந் ॥
asyaiva tu vadhē yatnam
kariṣyāvō mahābala ।
ādēkṣyāvō mahāvēgān
astrānāṡīviṣōpamān ॥
We will put every effort
to slay him and him alone,
O you of mighty strength!
Let us deploy extremely powerful Astras
that bite like venomous serpents.

6.80.41 ஈ தமேநம் மாயிநம் க்ஷுத்ரம்
அந்தர்ஹிதரதம் பலாத் ।
ராக்ஷஸம் நிஹநிஷ்யந்தி
த்ருஷ்ட்வா வாநரயூதபா: ॥
tamēnaṃ māyinaṃ kṣudram
antarhitarathaṃ balāt ।
rākṣasaṃ nihaniṣyanti
dṛṣṭvā vānarayūthapāḥ ॥
The Vānara chiefs themselves are strong enough
to kill this wile trickster who is hiding
in the sky along with his chariot,
if only they could see him.

6.80.42 ஈ யத்யைஷ பூமிம் விஸதே திவம் வா
ரஸாதலம் வாபி நபஸ்ஸ்தலம் வா ।
ஏவம் நிகூடோऽபி மமாஸ்த்ரதக்த:
பதிஷ்யதே பூமிதலே கதாஸு: ॥
yadyaiṣa bhūmiṃ viṡatē divaṃ vā
rasātalaṃ vāpi nabhassthalaṃ vā ।
ēvaṃ nigūḍhō'pi mamāstradagdhaḥ
patiṣyatē bhūmitalē gatāsuḥ ॥
No matter whether he takes
to the the earth or to the heavens,
to the nether world or to the skies,
or hides himself like this,
he will fall on the ground dead
burnt by my Astras.

6.80.43 ஈ இத்யேவமுக்த்வா வசநம் மஹாத்மா
ரகுப்ரவீர: ப்லவகர்ஷபைர்வ்ருத: ।
வதாய ரௌத்ரஸ்ய ந்ருஸம்ஸகர்மண:
ததா மஹாத்மா த்வரிதம் நிரீக்ஷதே ॥
ityēvamuktvā vacanaṃ mahātmā
raghupravīraḥ plavagarṣabhairvṛtaḥ ।
vadhāya raudrasya nṛṡaṃsakarmaṇaḥ
tadā mahātmā tvaritaṃ nirīkṣatē ॥
Saying this, that Mahātma,
a great warrior among Raghus,
standing in the midst of the bulls among Vānaras,
was all set to kill the terrifying Rākshasa
of cruel deeds, as soon as possible.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே அஸீதிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē aṡītitamaḥ sargaḥ॥

in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
