Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 81
In this Sarga, Indrajit uses his powers of magic to create a phantom Seetā, and plans to kill her before the eyes of the Vānaras. The Vānara army led by Hanumān advances towards the Rākshasa army led by him, when Hanumān sees the grieving and unkempt Seetā seated in Indrajit's chariot.
Hanumān, in agony over seeing her fallen into the hands of Indrajit, rebukes him in strong words for what he has done and warns him of fatal consequences if he harms her. Indrajit, with no care for the warning of Hanumān goes ahead and slays Seetā with his sword. He lets off mighty shouts of joy, hearing which the Vānaras flee.

rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ ।
sannivṛtyāhavāttasmāt
saṃvivēṡa puraṃ tataḥ ॥
Realizing what Mahātma Rāghava was thinking,
he (Indrajit) turned back from that battlefield
and went to the city (of Laṅkā).

sō'nusmṛtya vadhaṃ tēṣām
rākṣasānāṃ tarasvinām ।
krōdhatāmrēkṣaṇaḥ ṡūrō
nirjagāmātha rāvaṇiḥ ॥
Then, he, the great warrior, set out (again),
his eyes turned red in anger as he recalled
the destruction of powerful Rākshasas.

niryayau rākṣasairvṛtaḥ ।
indrajittu mahāvīryaḥ
paulastyō dēvakaṇṭakaḥ ॥
Then, with many Rākshasas around him,
Indrajit, the great warrior,
a descendant of Paulastya and
a thorn on the side of Dēvas,
re-emerged from the western gateway.

māyāṃ prāduṣkarōttadā ॥
Then, seeing the valiant brothers
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa ready and avid for the fight,
Indrajit deployed his powers of magic.

tasyā vadhamarōcayat ॥
Then Indrajit planned to place a phantom Seetā
in the chariot and slay her,
himself well protected by a huge Rākshasa force.

buddhiṃ kṛtvā sudurmatiḥ ।
hantuṃ sītāṃ vyavasitō
vānarābhimukhō yayau ॥
Set to kill (phantom) Seetā and
hoping to confound everyone
that evil-minded one advanced towards the Vānaras.

taṃ dṛṣṭvā tvabhiniryāntam
nagaryāḥ kānanaukasaḥ ।
utpēturabhisaṅkruddhāḥ
ṡilāhastā yuyutsavaḥ ॥
On seeing him emerge from the city,
the dwellers of the Vana sprang up in anger,
with boulders in their hands
and ready to put up a fight.

pragṛhya sumahacchṛṅgam
parvatasya durāsadam ॥
Hanumān, the foremost of the Vānaras, led them,
snatching a huge mountain crest
which none would dare face.

sītāmindrajitō rathē ।

upavāsakṛṡānanām ।
parikliṣṭaikavasanām
amṛjāṃ rāghavapriyām ।
rajōmalābhyāmāliptaiḥ
sarvagātrairvarastriyam ॥
He saw in the chariot of Indrajit,
Seetā, the best of women, Rāghava's beloved,
woebegone, completely devoid of cheer,
her hair braided in a single plait,
her face emaciated because of fasting,
clad in a single piece of crumpled cloth,
and unkempt with every limb of hers
smeared with dirt and dust.

babhūvāciradṛṣṭā hi
tēna sā janakātmajā ॥
He looked at her for a while
and was certain that it was Maithili;
for, it was not too long ago that
he had seen her, the daughter of Janaka.

hanumān vyathitō'bhavat ॥
On seeing Maithili woebegone,
all her limbs smeared with dirt, in that chariot.
Hanumān was in agony and
his face was covered by tears.

கிம் ஸமர்திதமஸ்யேதி
சிந்தயந் ஸ மஹாகபி: ।
ஸஹ தைர்வாநரஸ்ரேஷ்டை:
அப்யதாவத ராவணிம் ॥
abravīttāṃ tu ṡōkārtām
nirānandāṃ tapasvinīm ।
sītāṃ rathasthitāṃ dṛṣṭvā
rākṣasēndrasutāṡritām ।
kiṃ samarthitamasyēti
cintayan sa mahākapiḥ ।
saha tairvānaraṡrēṣṭhaiḥ
abhyadhāvata rāvaṇim ॥
Seeing her in that chariot, suffering,
devoid of any cheer and oppressed by grief,
and fallen into the hands of
the son of the Rākshasa King,
that great Vānara was worried, and thought aloud,
"What is he going to do now!",
and rushed towards Rāvaṇa's son
along with the other Vānara chiefs.

tadvānarabalaṃ dṛṣṭvā
rāvaṇiḥ krōdhamūrcchitaḥ ।
kṛtvā vikōṡaṃ nistriṃṡam
mūrdhni sītāmakarṣayat ॥
On seeing the Vānara forces,
Rāvaṇa’s son, filled with rage,
drew his sword from its scabbard,
and caught Seetā by the hair.

தாடயாமாஸ ராவணி: ।

tāṃ striyaṃ paṡyatāṃ tēṣām
tāḍayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ ।
krōṡantīṃ rāma rāmēti
māyayā yōjitāṃ rathē ॥
The son of Rāvaṇa hit Seetā,
a ploy created by magical powers,
as she cried, 'Rāma! O Rāma!, as they watched.

ஹநுமாந் தைந்யமாகத: ।

gṛhītamūrdhajāṃ dṛṣṭvā
hanumān dainyamāgataḥ ।
ṡōkajaṃ vāri naitrābhyām
asṛjanmārutātmajaḥ ॥
Hanumān, the son of Vāyu,
felt very sad watching her being caught by the hair,
tears of agony rolling down from his eyes.

tāṃ dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīm
rāmasya mahiṣīṃ priyām ।
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyam
krōdhādrakṣōdhipātmajam ॥
Seeing the beloved queen of Rāma,
whose every limb was lovely
(even in that condition),
he said these strong words to the
son of the Rākshasa King, in anger:

kēṡapakṣē parāmṛṡaḥ ।
brahmarṣīṇāṃ kulē jātō
rākṣasīṃ yōnimāṡritaḥ ॥
It is for your own destruction
that you touched her by the hair,
O you, who are born to a Rākshasa woman,
though a descendant of Brahmarshis!

அநார்யஸ்யேத்ருஸம் கர்ம
க்ருணா தே நாஸ்தி நிர்க்ருண ॥
dhik tvāṃ pāpasamācāram
yasya tē matirīdṛṡī ।
nṛṡaṃsānārya durvṛtta
kṣudra pāpaparākrama ।
anāryasyēdṛṡaṃ karma
ghṛṇā tē nāsti nirghṛṇa ॥
Dhik! What kind of a person are you,
to do a hideous thing like this,
O cruel, ignoble, vile, sordid one,
who uses the prowess only for sinful acts!
Who but the ignoble would do such a thing?
Do you not have even an iota of pity,
O ruthless wretch?

kiṃ tavaiṣā'parāddhā hi
yadēnāṃ hantumicchasi ॥
What offense did Maithili,
who lost the protection of
home, kingdom and the arms of Rāma,
commit against you, that you wish to kill her?

jīviṣyasi kathañcana ।
vadhārha karmaṇā'nēna
mama hastagatō hyasi ॥
There is no way you can hope
to live any longer if you kill Seetā!
You deserve to be killed and this act of yours
puts your life squarely in my hands!

லோகவத்யேஷு குத்ஸிதா: ।

yē ca strīghātināṃ lōkā
lōkavadhyēṣu kutsitāḥ ।
iha jivitamutsṛjya
prētya tān pratipatsyasē ॥
O you, who deserve death
at the hands of all the world!
You shall die and go to that world,
most execrated of all, to which
go those who kill women!

abhyadhāvata saṅkruddhō
rākṣasēndrasutaṃ prati ॥
Saying this, Hanumān, along with the other armed Vānaras,
rushed upon the son of the Rākshasa King in wrath.

tadanīkaṃ vanaukasām ।
rakṣasāṃ bhīmavēgānām
anīkaṃ tu nyavārayat ॥
As that army of Vana dwellers
of extraordinary valor came attacking them,
the Rākshasa army of formidable force
put up a stiff line of defense.

sa tāṃ bāṇasahasrēṇa
vikṣōbhya harivāhinīm ।
hariṡrēṣṭhaṃ hanūmantam
indrajit pratyuvāca ha ॥
Harrowing the Vānara army with
thousands of arrows, Indrajit responded to
Hanumān, the eminent Vānara, with these words:

யந்நிமித்தமிஹாகதா: ।
தாம் ஹநிஷ்யாமி வைதேஹீம்

sugrīvastvaṃ ca rāmaṡca
yannimittamihāgatāḥ ।
tāṃ haniṣyāmi vaidēhīm
adyaiva tava paṡyataḥ ॥
I shall kill Vaidēhee, for whose sake
Sugreeva, you and Rāma have come here,
right now and while you watch!

lakṣmaṇaṃ tvāṃ ca vānara ।
sugrīvaṃ ca vadhiṣyāmi
taṃ cānāryaṃ vibhīṣaṇam ॥
After killing her, O Vānara,
I shall slay Rāma, Lakshmaṇa, you,
Sugreeva and the ignoble Vibheeshaṇa!

yadbravīṣi plavaṅgama ।

yat syāt kartavyamēva tat ॥
As to your contention that women
should not be slain, O Vānara,
one must do whatever one can
to cause grief and misery to the foe.

ṡitadhārēṇa khaḍgēna
nijaghānēndrajit svayam ॥
Having said this,
Indrajit struck with his sharp sword
the phantom Seetā as she wept.

sā pṛthivyāṃ pṛthuṡrōṇī
papāta priyadarṡanā ।
tāmindrajitsvayaṃ hatvā
hanumantamuvāca ha ॥
Cut athwart, in the pattern that
one wears the sacred thread, and cloven,
the suffering woman with
wide Kaṭee and pleasing looks,
fell down on the ground.
Having himself killed her thus,
Indrajit said to Hanumān:

ப்ரியாம் ஸஸ்த்ர நிஷூதிதாம் ।

mayā rāmasya paṡyēmām
priyāṃ ṡastra niṣūditām ।
ēṣā viṡastā vaidēhī
viphalō vaḥ pariṡramaḥ ॥
Look at this beloved of Rāma,
struck by my weapon!
Vaidēhee is now dead and
all your efforts are a mere waste.

ஹத்வா தாமிந்த்ரஜித் ஸ்வயம் ।

tataḥ khaḍgēna mahatā
hatvā tāmindrajit svayam ।
hṛṣṭaḥ sa rathamāsthāya
vinanāda mahāsvanam ॥
Having slaughtered her himself
with his huge sword,
Indrajit, in high spirits,
let off strident shouts,
seated in his chariot.

அதூரே ப்ரத்யவஸ்திதா: ।

vānarāḥ ṡuṡruvuḥ ṡabdam
adūrē pratyavasthitāḥ ।
vyāditāsyasya nadataḥ
taddurgaṃ saṃṡritasya ca ॥
The Vānaras, who were not far away,
heard those shouts made by him
with his mouth gaping wide
from the midst of forces
that stood protecting him.

ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டசேதா: ஸ பபூவ ராவணி: ।
தம் ஹ்ருஷ்டரூபம் ஸமுதீக்ஷ்ய வாநரா
விஷண்ணரூபா: ஸஹஸாபிதுத்ருவு: ॥
tathā tu sītāṃ vinihatya durmatiḥ
prahṛṣṭacētāḥ sa babhūva rāvaṇiḥ ।
taṃ hṛṣṭarūpaṃ samudīkṣya vānarā
viṣaṇṇarūpāḥ sahasābhidudruvuḥ ॥
Having slain Seetā,
the evil-minded son of Rāvaṇa
was filled with extreme joy in his heart.
The Vānaras, seeing him in such joy,
became sad and fled immediately.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகாஸீதிதம: ஸர்க:॥

Thus concludes the eighty first Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
