Is there any such thing as Ghosts in Hinduism ?

In Hinduism there are many rituals performed that recognises the proximity of ghosts and seeks to keep them away.

Every year, a fortnight known as Pitr Paksha, between the the worship of Ganesha (Ganesha Chaturdashi) and the worship of Durga (Navaratri) is reserved for ancestors (pitrs) of Hindus. ( Mahalaya Patcham)

There are different kinds of ghosts: bhoot, preta, pisacha, vetals. Those who lived incomplete lives do not want to go to the land of the dead and so stay back in the land of the living. Those who lived complete lives, but their funeral rites were not properly performed, stay trapped in the land of the living. Some are cursed for misdeeds never to find peace in death and so in misery haunt the living. These are the ideas about ghosts that one gathers from various folklores and from the Garuda Purana, an elaborate treatise on death rituals.

The Bhagavat Puran informs us that Brahma, in a state of laziness, created bhuta-pisachas or ghosts. They were naked and their hair was unbound. Seeing them he shut his eyes (in fear?).

    sṛṣṭvā bhūta-piśācāṁś ca
    bhagavān ātma-tandriṇā
    dig-vāsaso mukta-keśān
    vīkṣya cāmīlayad dṛśau
    – from Srimad-Bhagavat 3.20.40

The glorious Brahmā next evolved from his sloth the ghosts and fiends, but he closed his eyes when he saw them stand naked with their hair scattered.

Ghosts/ Boots, Passau / are usually seen in human form .
They scare humans mostly in Woman form with hair spread..
However, their feet often reveal them to be ghosts, as they are backwards facing; for Ghosts the earth is regarded as sacred or semi-sacred in many traditions of the Indian subcontinent, Ghosts jumps/ to avoid contact with it, often floating above or up to a foot above.

Ghosts cast no shadows, and speak with a nasal twang. They often lurk on specific trees and prefer to appear in white clothing.

Sometimes Ghosts haunt specific houses (the so-called bhoot banglas, i.e. bhoot bungalows), which are typically places where they were killed or which have some other significance to the Ghosts.

In many regions, Ghosts are supposed to fear water and steel or iron objects, Neem tree leaves, broom stick, so keeping those nearby is believed to scare them off, As is typical of ghosts throughout the world, invoking the name of holy figures and deities is also said to repel them.

A particular kind of Ghost that of a woman that died during pregnancy or childbirth is known as a chudail (dakini in Nepal and eastern India ). Chudails look like human women, but their feet are turned backwards or other features are turned upside down. They can change their forms at any time. Chudails often try to lure young men at road crossings and fields or similar places. If a man is enamored of a chudail, it is believed that she will cause his death

In South India one kind of Ghost called Mohini, in woman form usually lures young adults to dark places and scares them to death.

There are other Scary looking ghosts like RAthakatteri, Kolluvai Pei , etc

According to Hindu mythology, the soul cannot be destroyed by any means. Ghost is created due to some anger, revenge, life cut short in human form like Suicide, or murdered, death by accident, or killed by hanging, and other means... like drowning, etc

The Hindu exorcists do not (or cannot) destroy them, but in turn performs a ritual according to the Atharva Veda,

    Black Magic/Kala Jadu/ Pilli Soonyam/eval are real?

Due to jealousy, or some base cause, the Tantriks use cheap tactics to overcome the adversaries, which can ruins one's life tranticas use Black Magic or witchcraft.

Those who use Tantric practices for self-indulgence and for harming others follow the Vamachara Tanra path. or Black Magic.

The Ābhicāraka Suktas are aimed to destroy or harm enemies who obstruct our progress or try to destroy us. This is said to be achieved by pleasing or appeasing certain deities or spirits and getting one’s wishes fulfilled through them. This technique is called ‘yātu’ or ‘kṛtyā.’ The number of such suktas is rather large. Destruction of one’s enemies including the lovers of one’s spouse, annihilation of evil spirits, mesmerizing others through whom one can get one’s desires fulfilled are some of the topics dealt with in these suktas.

The word ‘kṛṣṇendrajāla’ is sometimes used to indicate the type of black-magic rites .

In Hinduism, the Atharva Veda – the last of the vedas, written roughly around 1200–1000 B.C.E – contains hymns that deal with charms, magic spells, incantations, healing, and sorcery.

Atharva Veda contains mantras for white magic (defensive magic) as well as black magic (offensive magic)

Since Atharva Veda is the oldest text describing these practices and since it is still preserved without much modification, it is possible that Shamanic traditions worldwide have their origins in the Atharva Vedic religion.

Exorcism' is a practise to weed out evil spirits that possess normal human beings. You might be familiar with it from the Horror movies that you may have seen.

There are a few places of worship in India where also people 'possessed' by evil spirits are brought in by their relatives and are 'cured'.

Those who don't believe in the supernatural, should surely visit these temples once during their lifetime, if not all of them at least one of them..

    1. Mahendipur Balaji Temple , Rajasthan

In this temple one can witness possessed people pouring boiling water over themselves to make the ghosts go away, will stay with you for many days after you've visited this 'shrine'. The 'possessed' are also showered with stones and then chained to walls.
    2. Hazrat Syed Ali Meera Datar Dargah, Gujarat

In this Dargah it's common sight to see men, women rolling on the floor, as a part of the remedy.

    3. Devji Maharaj Mandir, Malajpur

This is one of those few temples, which hosts a ' Bhoot Mela' every year.

It's common sight to see people running and being brushed off with the holy broom, and to see the 'sinners' light camphor on their palms/wrists as a way to get rid of the evil spirits.

    4. Dattatreya Mandir, Gangapur

In this Temple , some of the possessed people, actually climb up the poles on the premises and suspend themselves.

5 Sant Sabir Shah Dargah, Chainpur

Men chain themselves to the walls in order to cure themselves here.
Scary, unnerving place, filled to the brim with people thought to be in the control of a deviant spirit. Here, you'll see women offering prayers in a trance like, otherworldly state, while young men in chains attached to the wall wait for their own 'cures'.

    6 Chottanikkara Temple

Chottanikara Baghavathy temple is one of the most famous temples of Goddess (Bagavathy in Malayalam language) in Kerala. It is also a place where persons who are believed to be possessed by evil spirits are brought so that they may be exorcised of the devil

If you believe in ghosts, you're not alone. Cultures all around the world believe in spirits that survive death to live in another realm. In fact, ghosts are among the most widely believed of paranormal phenomenon: Millions of people are interested in ghosts, and a 2013 Harris Poll found that 43 percent of Americans believe in ghosts.

There are Good Spirits as well as bad spirits

My elder brother Ramachandran, used to communicate with our departed elder sister Lalitha, through PLANJET ,

    I had seen myself small Kutti Chathans when our Grand ma was about to expire;

We used to see Jadamuni doing some ritual in big THOTTAM WELL when i was very young, behind our home in THIRUVOTHIYUR ; but did not see the Muni itself..

I am leaving to your discretion to believe in Ghosts, or you may choose to ignore them..

But in that case make sure you visit a Burial Ground on Amavasai Night..

    Have a wonderful day
