Significance of Sri Krishna's Peacock feathers
For most devotees, the peacock feather in Lord Krishna's hair is as iconic as the lord himself. The devotees lovingly call Lord Krishna as 'Mormukut Dhari', which translates as 'the one who wears a crown of peacock feathers
It is said that the all the seven primary colours are present in the feather of a peacock. It is said that Lord Krishna wears the peacock feather in his hair to show that he has all the colours of life within him. Lord Krishna is someone who embodies the whole universe and he holds us in trance with all his varied forms, views and personalities.
Also Peacock feather signifies Lord's askalitha brahmacharitva (means perfect/eternal celibate). Lord wears it to signify that his a ajanma brahmachari/nitya brahmachari. It is proven when Lord revives the foetus of the womb of uttara.(who is none other than maharaja parikshit son of abhimanyu).
Peacock is the only species which doesn't reproduce through the samyoga of male and female reproductory organs, the peahen collects tears of peacock(which contain reproduction cells) and lay eggs.
Srila Gopâl Bhatta Goswâmi says –The peacock feather signifies the
all-attractiveness of the extravagant beauty of Sri Krishna
madhuratara–smitâmrita–vimugdha mukhâmburuham
mada-shikhi–pichchha–lânchhita–manojna–kacha–prachayam,
vishaya–vish–âmish–grasana–gridhnuni chetasi me
vipula – vilochanam kimapi dhâma chakastu chiram.
Translation
His lotus-face is most captivating with very sweet nectarine smile,
His enchanting hairdo is adorned with intoxicated peacockfeathers
- may That large–eyed marvelous Brilliance (Govinda)
eternally manifest in my carnivorous heart that covets the
poisonous objects of sense-gratification.(Krishna Karnamrita Verse 5)
mada-shikhandi – shikhanda–vibhushanam’
“The feathers of love–intoxicated peacocks are His special ornaments.” No Divine form
other than Sri Krishna is groomed in this manner.
