sa saṃrabdhastu saumitriḥ
astraṃ vāruṇamādadē ।
raudraṃ mahēndrajidyuddhē
vyasṛjadyudhi niṣṭhitaḥ ।
tēna tadvihataṃtvastram
vāruṇaṃ paramādbhutam ॥
Reacting instantly, Sowmitri
took Varuṇa's Astra (and shot it).
Indrajit, who was also fighting with zest
then shot Rudras's Astra,
which struck the amazing and
extraordinary Varuṇa's Astra down.

indrajit samitiñjayaḥ ।
āgnēyaṃ sandadhē dīptam
sa lōkaṃ saṅkṣipanniva ।
saurēṇāstrēṇa tadvīrō
lakṣmaṇaḥ pratyavārayat ॥
Then Indrajit of tremendous power,
a winner of battles,
launched the blazing Astra of Agni,
as if he were to destroy the world in his rage.
The valiant Lakshmaṇa thwarted
it with the Astra of Surya.

ஸூலாநி ச புஸுண்ட்யஸ்ச
கதா: கட்கா: பரஸ்வதா: ॥
astraṃ nivāritaṃ dṛṣṭvā
rāvaṇiḥ krōdhamūrcchitaḥ ।
āsuraṃ ṡatrunāṡāya
ghōramastraṃ samādadē ।
tasmāccāpādviniṣpētuḥ
bhāsvarāḥ kūṭamudgarāḥ ।
ṡūlāni ca bhuṡuṇḍyaṡca
gadāḥ khaḍgāḥ paraṡvadhāḥ ॥
Seeing that Astra rendered futile,
the son of Rāvaṇa, beside himself with rage,
launched the dreaded Astra of Asuras,
to destroy the enemy, which,
with its power, caused a multitude of
shining hammers, Mudgaras, spears,
Bhuṡundis, maces, swords and battle-axes,
to emerge from the bow.

ghōramastramathāsuram ।
avāryaṃ sarvabhūtānām
sarvaṡatravidāraṇam ।
māhēṡvarēṇa dyutimān
tadastraṃ pratyavārayat ॥
Seeing that terrible Astra of Asuras coming,
which could tear apart all the other Ṡastras,
and which no creature could hope to stop,
Lakshmaṇa of great splendor countered it
with the Astra of Mahēṡwara.

And the creatures of the sky
hovered where Lakshmaṇa was, to watch
the marvel of their tumultuous fight.

The sky shone, crowded with the creatures
that watched with amazement
the fierce fight between
Vānaras and Rākshasas
that raised a frightful din.

ṡatakratuṃ puraskṛtya
rarakṣurlakṣmaṇaṃ raṇē ॥
The Ṛshis, the Dēvas, the Pitṛ Dēvatas,
the Gandharvas, the Garuḍas and the Uragas,
led by Indra, protected Lakshmaṇa in that fight.

athānyaṃ mārgaṇaṡrēṣṭham
sandadhē rāghavānujaḥ ।
hutāṡanasamasparṡam
rāvaṇātmajadāraṇam ।
supatramanuvṛttāṅgam
suparvāṇaṃ susaṃsthitam ।
suvarṇavikṛtaṃ vīraḥ
ṡarīrāntakaraṃ ṡaram ।
durāvāraṃ durviṣahyam
rākṣasānāṃ bhayāvaham ।
āṡīviṣaviṣaprakhyam
dēvasaṅghaiḥ samarcitam ।
yēna ṡakrō mahātējā
dānavānajayat prabhuḥ ।
purā daivāsurē yuddhē
vīryavān harivāhanaḥ ॥
Then the younger brother of Rāghava
launched another powerful arrow,
whose touch was like that of fire,
which would tear apart the son of Rāvaṇa,
which was fitted with splendid feathers
and was adorned with gold, whose
shaft was well-proportioned and smooth-jointed,
which could not be stopped and
which no one could withstand,
which put fear into Rākshasas,
which was deadly like the venom of a serpent,
which was admired by the companies of Dēvas,
which was used once upon a time
by the valiant Lord Ṡakra of extraordinary power
to defeat the Dānavas in the
battle between Dēvas and Asuras.

லக்ஷ்மீவால்லக்ஷ்மணோ வாக்யம்
அர்தஸாதகமாத்மந: ॥
tadaindramastraṃ saumitriḥ
saṃyugēṣvaparājitam ।
ṡaraṡrēṣṭhaṃ dhanuḥ ṡrēṣṭhē
vikarṣannidamabravīt ।
lakṣmīvāँllakṣmaṇō vākyam
arthasādhakamātmanaḥ ॥
Mounting that Astra of Indra,
which was the best of the arrows and
which never knew defeat in a fight,
on the best of the bows and drawing it to the full,
Lakshmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā, of opulent bearing,
said these words that would
help accomplish his objective:

rāmō dāṡarathiryadi ।
pauruṣē cāpratidvandvaḥ
ṡarainaṃ jahi rāvaṇim ॥
If Rāma, Daṡaratha’s son,
is in truth a Dharmātma who avows truth,
and has no equal in his manliness,
may this arrow slay this son of Rāvaṇa!

vikṛṣya tamajihmagam ।
lakṣmaṇaḥ samarē vīraḥ
sasarjēndrajitaṃ prati ।
aindrāstrēṇa samāyōjya
lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ॥
Saying this and pulling the arrow up to his ear,
the valiant Lakshmaṇa, destroyer of enemy warriors,
shot it, infusing it with the power of
Indra's Astra, at Indrajit.

ṡrīmajjvalitakuṇḍalam ।
pramathyēndrajitaḥ kāyāt
pātayāmāsa bhūtalē ॥
It severed the head of Indrajit
with its helmet and its
lovely gleaming ear-pendants
and threw it down on the ground.

chinnaskandhaṃ ṡirō mahat ।
tapanīyanibhaṃ bhūmau
dadṛṡē rudhirōkṣitam ॥
That huge head of the Rākshasa’s son,
severed from the body and drenched with blood,
shone on the ground like gold purified in fire.

kavacī saṡirastrāṇō
vipraviddha ṡarāsanaḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa’s son, thus slain
tumbled down to the ground,
along with his armor and helmet,
his bow thrown afar.

வாநரா: ஸவிபீஷணா: ।

cukruṡustē tataḥ sarvē
vānarāḥ savibhīṣaṇāḥ ।
hṛṣyantō nihatē tasmin
dēvā vṛtravadhē yathā ॥
Then all the Vānaras, along with Vibheeshaṇa
shouted in joy, rejoicing at his death,
like the Dēvas did when Vṛtra was slain.

ருஷீணாம் ச மஹாத்மநாம் ।

ṛṣīṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ।
jajñē'tha jayasannādō
gandharvāpsarasāmapi ॥
And in the sky was heard applause
from the Mahātmas like Dēvas and Ṛshis
and also Gandharvas and Apsarasas.

rākṣasī sā mahācamūḥ ।
vadhyamānā diṡō bhējē
haribhirjitakāṡibhiḥ ॥
Realizing that he was struck down,
the Rākshasa army flew in every direction
as the Vānaras, who were basking
in the glory of victory, beat them up.

vānarairvadhyamānāstē
ṡastrāṇyutsṛjya rākṣasāḥ ।
laṅkāmabhimukhāḥ sastruḥ
naṣṭasañjñāḥ pradhāvitāḥ ॥
Beaten up by the Vānaras,
the Rākshasas lost their senses
and fled towards Laṅkā,
abandoning their weapons.

rākṣasāḥ ṡataṡō diṡaḥ ।
tyaktvā praharaṇān sarvē
paṭṭiṡāsiparaṡvadhān ॥
Hundreds of them, throwing down all their
weapons, Paṭṭiṡas, swords and battle-axes,
fled in terror in every direction.

praviṣṭā vānarārditāḥ ।
samudrē patitāḥ kēcit
kēcit parvatamāṡritāḥ ॥
Oppressed by the Vānaras,
some entered Laṅkā in extreme fear,
some fell in the ocean, and
others escaped to the mountains.

hatamindrajitaṃ dṛṣṭvā
ṡayānaṃ samarakṣitau ।
rākṣasānāṃ sahasrēṣu
na kaṡcit pratyadṛṡyata ॥
None of the thousands of Rākshasas who saw
Indrajit slain and lying on the battle field,
was to be seen anywhere, anymore.

நாவதிஷ்டந்தி ரஸ்மய: ।

nāvatiṣṭhanti raṡmayaḥ ।
tathā tasminnipatitē
rākṣasāstē gatā diṡaḥ ॥
Just as the sun’s rays vanish when the sun sets,
the Rākshasas vanished in every direction
with him falling down.

நிர்வாண இவ பாவக: ।
ஸ பபூவ மஹாபாஹு:

nirvāṇa iva pāvakaḥ ।
sa babhūva mahābāhuḥ
vyapāstagatajīvitaḥ ॥
His limbs flagging with life gone out of them,
Indrajit of mighty arm lay dead,
looking like fire that had been put off and like
the sun whose rays had lost their intensity.

naṣṭāriṣṭaḥ praharṣavān ।
babhūva lōkaḥ patitē
rākṣasēndrasutē tadā ॥
Relieved of its suffering
and freed from its troubles
the world became joyful, with
the son of the Rākshasa King fallen.

saha sarvaiḥ surarṣabhaiḥ ।
jagāma nihatē tasmin
rākṣasē pāpakarmaṇi ॥
Bhagawān Ṡakra along with all
the bulls among Suras felt very happy,
with that Rākshasa of sinful deeds slain.

ṡuṡruvē dundubhisvanaḥ ।
nṛtyadbhirapsarōbhiṡca
gandharvaiṡca mahātmabhiḥ ॥
The booming of kettle drums of the Dēvas
and the sounds of dancing Apsarasas
and the Gandharvas were heard from the sky.

ததத்புதமபூத்ததா ।

vavarṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi
tadadbhutamabhūttadā ।
praṡaṡaṃsurhatē tasmin
rākṣasē krūrakarmaṇi ॥
Then they showered flowers, which
made an amazing spectacle to behold.
They also applauded the slaying of
that Rākshasa who committed cruel deeds.

ājagmuḥ patitē tasmin
sarvalōkabhayāvahē ॥
The waters and the sky became clear.
Dēvas and Dānavas were happy and descended down,
with him, who terrified the worlds, fallen.

dēvagandharvadānavāḥ ।
vijvarāḥ ṡāntakaluṣāḥ
brāhmaṇā vicarantviti ॥
Coming together and happy,
the Dēvas, Dānavas and Gandharvas said,
"May all the Brāhmaṇas go about their life
relieved from their suffering and
freed from their worries."

hataṃ nairṛtapuṅgavam ॥
And the Vānara chiefs, delighted
seeing that bull among the Rākshasa,
of matchless strength, fallen in battle,
congratulated Lakshmaṇa.

vibhīṣaṇō hanūmāṃṡca
jāmbavāṃṡcarkṣayūthapaḥ ।
vijayēnābhinandantaḥ

All the well-wishers of Lakshmaṇa
were very happy seeing him
accomplish such a difficult task.
The hearts of Dēvas were filled with extreme joy
hearing that that foe of Indra was slain.

Seeing that Astra rendered futile,
the son of Rāvaṇa, beside himself with rage,
launched the dreaded Astra of Asuras,

with its power, caused a multitude of
shining hammers, Mudgaras, spears,
Bhuṡundis, maces, swords and battle-axes,
to emerge from the bow.

Then the younger brother of Rāghava
launched another powerful arrow,
whose touch was like that of fire,
which would tear apart the son of Rāvaṇa,
which was fitted with splendid feathers
and was adorned with gold, whose
shaft was well-proportioned and smooth-jointed,
which could not be stopped and
which no one could withstand,
which put fear into Rākshasas,
which was deadly like the venom of a serpent,
which was admired by the companies of Dēvas,
which was used once upon a time
by the valiant Lord Ṡakra of extraordinary power
to defeat the Dānavas in the
battle between Dēvas and Asuras.

the Rākshasas lost their senses
and fled towards Laṅkā,
abandoning their weapons.

nṛtyadbhirapsarōbhiṡca
gandharvaiṡca mahātmabhiḥ ॥
The booming of kettle drums of the Dēvas
and the sounds of dancing Apsarasas
and the Gandharvas were heard from the sky.

ததத்புதமபூத்ததா ।

vavarṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi
tadadbhutamabhūttadā ।
praṡaṡaṃsurhatē tasmin
rākṣasē krūrakarmaṇi ॥
Then they showered flowers, which
made an amazing spectacle to behold.
They also applauded the slaying of
that Rākshasa who committed cruel deeds.

jahṛṣurdēvadānavāḥ ।
ājagmuḥ patitē tasmin
sarvalōkabhayāvahē ॥
The waters and the sky became clear.
Dēvas and Dānavas were happy and descended down,
with him, who terrified the worlds, fallen.

தேவகந்தர்வதாநவா: ।

ūcuṡca sahitāstuṣṭāḥ
dēvagandharvadānavāḥ ।
vijvarāḥ ṡāntakaluṣāḥ
brāhmaṇā vicarantviti ॥
Coming together and happy,
the Dēvas, Dānavas and Gandharvas said,
"May all the Brāhmaṇas go about their life
relieved from their suffering and
freed from their worries."

ஸமரே ஹரியூதபா: ।

tatō'bhyanandan saṃhṛṣṭāḥ
samarē hariyūthapāḥ ।
tamapratibalaṃ dṛṣṭvā
hataṃ nairṛtapuṅgavam ॥
And the Vānara chiefs, delighted
seeing that bull among the Rākshasa,
of matchless strength, fallen in battle,
congratulated Lakshmaṇa.

vibhīṣaṇō hanūmāṃṡca
jāmbavāṃṡcarkṣayūthapaḥ ।
vijayēnābhinandantaḥ
tuṣṭuvuṡcāpi lakṣmaṇam ॥
Vibheeshaṇa, Hanumān and
Jāmbavān, the leader of the Ṛkshas,
congratulated Lakshmaṇa on his
victory and applauded him.

kṣvēḍantaṡca plavantaṡca
garjantaṡca plavaṅgamāḥ ।
labdhalakṣā raghusutam
parivāryōpatasthirē ॥
The Vānaras who accomplished their mission,
gathered around Lakshmaṇa, the descendant of Raghu,
shouting, jumping and roaring.

ஸ்போடயந்தஸ்ச வாநரா: ।
லக்ஷ்மணோ ஜயதீத்யேவம்

lāṅgūlāni pravidhyantaḥ
sphōṭayantaṡca vānarāḥ ।
lakṣmaṇō jayatītyēvam
vākyaṃ viṡrāvayaṃstadā ॥
Lashing their tails on the ground and
slapping their shoulders, they were heard
shouting, ‘Victory to Lakshmaṇa!’

கபயோ ஹ்ருஷ்டமாநஸா: ।
சக்ருருச்சாவசகுணா

anyōnyaṃ ca samāṡliṣya
kapayō hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ।
cakruruccāvacaguṇā
rāghavāṡrayasatkathāḥ ॥
Their hearts filled with joy,
the Vānaras hugged each other
and related stories of the
great virtues of Rāghava to each other.

ப்ரியஸுஹ்ருதோ யுதி லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய கர்ம ।
பரமமுபலபந் மந:ப்ரஹர்ஷம்
விநிஹதமிந்த்ரரிபும் நிஸம்ய தேவா: ॥
tadasukaramathābhivīkṣya hṛṣṭāḥ
priyasuhṛdō yudhi lakṣmaṇasya karma ।
paramamupalabhan manaḥpraharṣam
vinihatamindraripuṃ niṡamya dēvāḥ ॥
All the well-wishers of Lakshmaṇa
were very happy seeing him
accomplish such a difficult task.
The hearts of Dēvas were filled with extreme joy
hearing that that foe of Indra was slain.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே நவதிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē navatitamaḥ sargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the ninetieth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
