Pradosham is a significant day to worship Lord Siva and his consort Goddess Parvathi. It falls on the the 13th day(Trayodasi)of lunar(moon) cycle and hence falls two times in a month, once in the waxing period and once in the waning period.

Asuras and Devars were grinding the Parkadal [Sea] using "VASUKI" (The Snake) as the rope. During this process the snake split the poison which shocked the Devars and the Asuras. Since the first extract has to be consumed the Devars and the Asuras prayed to Lord to Shiva to save them. Lord Shiva drank the poison upto his throat to save his devotees and it's believed his throat turned to blue as the result the poison . By doing this Lord Shiva is also called as "Thiruneelagandan" .This is an example for the kind heartedness of Lord Shiva. The suffering time of Lord Shiva for his devottees is known as Pradosha.

According to Hindu mythology, the day Saturday is dedicated to Lord Shani or Shaneeshwara, one of the Navagrahas or nine celestial gods. Lord Shani or Sani has always been related with troubles and ill effects. Moreover, all Hindus believing in astrology dread the effects of Shani over a person’s life. To overcome and avoid the adversities and misfortunes of Lord Shani, people observe fasts on Shanivar or Saturday. And when a Pradosh falls on a Saturday, it is termed as Shani Pradosh. To overcome the bad influence of Shani, devotees observe a vrat on Shani Pradosh and offering prayers to Shiva during the day.

Sani Pradosham is special because it is believed that Lord Shiva took poison on saturday. Pradhosham before Maha Shivarathri is called Maha Pradosham. Maha pradhosham on saturday is called Sani Maha Pradhosham.

    Pradosham timings are 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset, that is it is observed in the twilight period. Some do abishekas for the Lingam;

During Prodhosha time anointing (Abhishekam) the Shiva deity with the following is considered fruitful.

    Milk gives long life
    Ghee gives Moksha state
    Curd gives good children
    Honey gives melodious voice
    Rice powder frees from debts
Sugar cane juice gives good health
    Panjamrutham gives wealth
    Lemon removes fear of death
    Sugar removes enmity
    Tender coconut gives enjoyment
    Cooked Rice(Annam) gives mejestic life
    Sandal gives Lakshmi's grace

Some people chant "OM Nama Shivaya" , some chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (given below) 108 times and the very pious also read the Siva Skanda Purana Story.

But it is said, that just lighting a lamp and praying also please the Lord a lot.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and its meaning

    Om Tryamlakam Yajamahe
    Sugandhim Pustivardhanam
    Urva rukamiva Bandhanan
    Mrtyor muksheeya Ma amritat

Om. We worship The Three-Eyed Lord Shiva who is fragrant and who increasingly nourishes the devotees. By worshipping him may we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality just as the ripe cucumber easily separates itself from the binding stalk.

The highlight of every pradosha is the Soma Sooktha Pradakshinam.
The pradakshinam starts at the Kodimaram, behind Nandi. Having a darshan of the linga through Nandi’s horns, the procession goes around the temple anti-clockwose until it reaches the Gomukhi (the spout from which the abhisheka waters come out). There the procession turns back and comes back to the Kodimaram and continues its clockwise rotation until it reaches the Chandikeswara shrine. Once again the direction of travel is reversed and the procession ends up at the kodi maram. This bizzare circumambulation is repeated three times with the Pradosha Nayakar in the lead. This is called the Somasooktha pradakshinam because while doing it, the lord and the devotees describe the shape of a crescent moon (Soma-moon).

Namah Parvathi Pathaye, Hara Hara Mahadeva
