    London Tube Celebrates 150 years.

London Underground Railways more commonly known as The Tube celebrated 150 years on January,9,2013. The first stretch measuring Six Kms (about four miles) between Paddington (Bishop's Road) and Farringdon Street of "the Metropolitan" or Met was opened for public on January,9,1863. Today The Tube serves 270 stations and runs on 402 Kms of track, 45% of which runs underground. It is the fourth largest Metropolitan rail system in the world, in terms of distance covered , after Seoul Metro, Beijing Subway and Shanghai Metro.

The London Underground's 11 lines are divided into two classes: the subsurface routes and the deep-tube routes. The subsurface lines were dug by the cut and cover method, with the tracks running about 5 m below the surface. The deep-level or tube lines, bored using a tunneling shield a run about 20 m below the surface (although this varies considerably), with each track in a separate tunnel. On an average 3.23 million people travel every day by the Tube.

An exclusive collection of gifts and souvenirs inspired by imagery of the London Underground logos and poster archive has been launched to commemorate the anniversary. The collection includes Underground Line cufflinks, Blueprint ceramics, limited edition lino-cut prints and posters and Metropolitan glassware.

India has also entered into Metro systems in Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore.
