    THIS YEAR IT FALLS ON 17-11-2013. NORMALLY, THIS FESTIVAL WILL BE CELEBRATED ON THE FULL MOON DAY IN THE TAMIL MONTH OF KARTHIGAI.WITH THE STAR KRUTHIKAI COINCIDING WITH

    THAT. SOME TIMES THE STAR WILL FALL ON SOME OTHER DAY ALSO.IN SUCH CASES THE FESTIVAL WILL BE CELEBRATED SEPARATELY IN DIFFERENT DATES BY SAIVATES AND VAISHNA VATES.IN SOME

    HOUSES THE KARTHIGAI DEEPAM LAMP WILL BE LIT ONLY ON THIRUVANNAMALAI DEEPAM DAY. SOME PEOPLE ON SARVAALAYA DEEPAM DAY.IN SOME HOUSES THE FESTIVAL WILL BE CELEBRATED ON THE DAY

    WHEN THE DEEPAM IS LIT IN THE LOCAL SIVA TEMPLES.

    IN THE MORNING , DECORATE THE THE HOUSE WITH RANGOLI AFTER CLEANING AND WASHING THE HOUSE AND ITS FRONTAGE ETC; THE WOODEN PLANKS, ON WHICH THE MUD LAMPS ETC; ARE TO BE

    PLACED BEFORE LIGHTING THE SAME AND THE OTHER PLACES IN THE HOUSE CAN BE DECORATED WITH KOLAM ETC; IN THE AFTERNOON ITSELF. IT IS THE CUSTOMERY FOR THE SUMANGALIS AND FEMALE

    CHILDREN IN THE HOUSE TO TAKE OIL BATH IN THE MORNING.

    FRY LIGHTLY RICE, RED GRAM DHALL AND BENGAL GRAM DHALL.SOAK, RINSE AND REMOVE STONESAND GRIND INTO A MASS. WHEN GROUND WELL ADD GRATED COCONUT , REQUIRED QUANTITY OF

    JAGGERY AND FOUR CARDAMOMS AND GRIND AGAIN.ADD OIL OR GHEE IN AN ADAI PAN OR A SHALLOW FRYING PAN AND PREPARE SMALL ADAIS NPUT THE ADAIS IN THE PAN AND REMOVE WHEN COOKED.

    IN THANJAVUR DISTRICT PUFFED PADDY AND PUFFED BEATEN RICE FLAKES WILL BE PREPARED INTO LADDUS. THOSE BELONGING TO MADURAI DISTRICT WILL NOT PREPARE LADDUS BUT WILL KEEP THE

    PORIS AS LUMPS.

    TAKE ONE WOODEN PLANK AND DECORATE IT WITH RANGOLI AFTER CLEANING AND WASHING THE PLANK AS WELL. PURCHASE SOME NEW MUD AHALS AND ADD IT WITH THE OLD ONES IN THE HOUSE.

    CLEAN THE MUD LAMPS WITH WATER AND WIPE IT DRY. KEEP THE LAMPS ARRANGED ON THE PLANKS. FILL THE LAMPS WITH OIL.TAKE A PAIR OF OIL WICKS MADE OF CLOTH OR COTTON YARN.TWIST IT

    TOGETHER INTO ONE. APPLY SANDAL PASTE AND KUMKUMAM ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WICK AND PUT IT IN THE CLAY LAMPS. REPEAT THIS WITH ALL LAMPS.

    THE BRASS KUTHU VILAKKU AND OTHER BRASS OIL LAMPS IN THE HOUSE SHOULD BE CLEANED WELL, APPLIED WITH SANDAL PASTE AND KUMKUMAM AND KEPT READY,AFTER FILLING THEM WITH OIL.

    NEVER USE GROUND NUT OIL.THE LAMPS AND PICTURES OF THE DEITIES IN THE POOJA ROOM MAY BE DECORATED WITH FLOWERS. AFTER LUNCH , PREPARE THE VADAI ITEMS ETC; TO BE OFFERED FOR

    THE POOJA. IN THE EVENING AFTER FIVE O CLOCK . IF THERE IS NO RAHU KAALAM. LIGHT THE KUTHU VILAKKU AND ALL OTHER MUD LAMPS. BY THE CHANTING THIS SLOGAM.

    THE LIGHTED MUD LAMPS CAN BE ARRANGED AT THE FRONTAGE OF THE HOUSE.BRASS LAMPS MUST BE PLACED INSIDE THE HOUSE.SEE THAT THE LIGHTED LAMPS ARE KEPT CONTINUOSLY BURNING TO

    THE EXTREME POSSIBLE. ADD MORE OIL THAT THE LAMPS MUST BE KEPT BURNING UPTO 7 P.M. CHILDREN WILL BURST CRACKERS WHEN THE LAMPS ARE LIT. NEW DRESSES MAY BE GOT FOR THIS

    FESTIVAL IF FEASIBLE.

    IN THE NEXT NIGHT LIGHT A LESSER NUMBER OF OF MUD LAMPS, OFFER PLANTAIN FRUIT AND THAAMBOOLAM AS NEIVEDHYAM AND KEEP THE LIGHTED LAMPS BOTH IN FRONT AND BACKYARD OF THE

    HOUSE.

    DURING THE FIRST YEAR AFTER MARRIAGE , THE GIRLS WILL BE GIVEN FOR "THALAI KARTHIKAI" AS SEER PORI AND VADAI WITH THENKUZHAL OR MANUVAL. AND THAAMBOOLAM, FRUITS,AND

    FLOWERS AND MANJAL AND KUMKUMAM. KUTHU VILAKKU AND MUD AGALS AND SOME BRASS VILAKKU.
