  • Shrardha Niyamam.

I perform Annual Shrardham for my parents.
    Our family is "Rig Vedam".
We are being told more than often by our Vadhiyar that
"Homam" need not be included in the Shrardham.
My wife and I are left painfully confused on this.
We believe that Homam is an integral part of Shrardham ritual.
Any light thrown on this will help clarify it for us.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Saligramam.

    Re: Shrardha Niyamam.

    Sri:
A gruhasthan should do the Shradham only as Parvanam with Agni Santhanam Aupasanam whatever be the vedam and sutram.
Rig vedam is little difficult and less population and less vadhyars.
So, either the Vahdyar may not know how to perform the Shradham with Agni
or The Vadhyar may have some other works to attend so, he wants to perform this in short time.
Better you discuss with your vadhyar, in the mean time try to find a good knowledgeable and sincere vadhayr.

            Re: Shrardha Niyamam.

            Hello,
I happened to have the same question a few months ago. I have an elderly relative, who is Rg-vedI while my family is yajur-vedI. I became curious and I asked him why he did not do the pitR yaj~na havana. Laughing, he told me that agni lives on the right palm of the Rg-vedI brAhmaNa.
(As I do not know much of the veda, I do not know why elders do the homa. But I wonder if all Rg-vedi-s avoid the homa? And does shrAddha niyama form part of the gRhya sUtras - elders do not call it saMskAra. Some people say yaj~navalkya wrote a book on tarpaNa and shrAddha niyama /nirNaya. Perhaps it is a smArta karma. )
