இன்று நாம் நம் குழந்தைகளுக்கு, புதுமையான பெயர்களை வைக்க வேண்டுமென்பதற்காக, சில புத்தகங்களை விலைகொடுத்து வாங்கி அதில் தேடித்தேடி, வாயில் நுழையாத, மனத்தில் நிற்காதப் பெயர்-களைச் சூட்டி மகிழ்கிறோம். அந்த நாட்களில் நம் பெரியோர்கள் பெருமாளின் பெயரை பிள்ளைகளுக்கும், தாயார் பெயரை பெண்குழ-ந்தைகளுக்கும் வைப்பர். காரணம் அந்தக் குழந்தைகளை அழை-க்கும் போதாவது எம்பெருமான் நாமத்தை உச்சரிப்போம் இல்லையா ஆழ்வார்களும் கடைசீ காலத்தில் பெருமாளை நினைக்க முடி-யாமல் போய்விடப்போகிறதேயென்று, அப்போதைக்கு இப்போதே உன் நாமாவை உச்சரிக்கும் பாக்யத்தை எனக்குக் கொடு என்று வேண்டுகின்றனர். அஜாமிளன் என்பவன் மரணப்படுக்கையில் இருக்கும்போது தன்னையறியாமல் தன் மகன் “நாராயணனை’ அழைக்க வைகுந்தம் சேர்ந்தானன்றோ ?
கடவுள் பெயரை வைப்பதனால் நம்மை அறியாமலே பலமுறை அவன் நாமாவை உச்சரிப்போம் இல்லையா ?
ஆகவே நீங்களும் சிந்தியுங்கள்

Although the intention of keeping god's name is good, the parents and others call the name only in shortened form; for example one of my friend is called as "NANA" where as his full name is NARAYANANAN!!

We Brahmins have the habit of shortening or calling in a an affectionate name which has no relationship with original name, like AMBI, Pichai, ( Pichumani is shortened like that ) Babu, Vaithi, Sachu, Lalli, ( Lalithambika is shortened) ,Sundu, Baba ( padmanabhan) Mani, ( manikantan) Sheshu ( Sheshadri), kutti, dhamu ( damodharan) and many more like that.

It is true that what you said is correct. We brahmins have our own seperate identity in all respects including shortening our names.. That will in no way affect our god fearing nature and our daily routine in performing pooja etc., Shortening our names is also a way of enjoying ourselves to a certain extent. Why should we curtail ourselves from all these enjoyments.
Perhaps I may find a lot of happiness when I call you PADDU affectionately. Dont you like others calling you PADDU...

You are right, When you address someone with their pet name, closeness in relationship comes.
