Located at Jalan Tukang Emas (also known as Harmony Street), Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia. Jalan Tukang Emas, Jalan Tukang Besi, Jalan Tokong are the streets that makes up the entire Harmony Street. These streets are called Harmony Street because it portrays a sense of harmony between the major races in Malaysia and temples of different religions are able to locate in close proximity with each other. The temples here are theCheng Hoon Teng Temple, the Kampung Kling’s Mosque and the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple.

Built in 1781 on a land donated by Kapitan Thaivanayagam Chitty. The Kapitan position in Malacca was created by the Portuguese as a head administrator to the local community. Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple is dedicated to Lord Vinayagar (also known as Ganesha), an elephant-headed god with body of a man and four hands. Lord Vinayagar is the deity revered for his wisdom and ability to remove obstacle so one could accomplish one’s desire or goal. You can see the sculpture of the deity in the the back room of the temple. The side altars are dedicated to Vinayagar’s father, mother and younger brother deity, Lord Muruga.

    Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple
is the main focal point for the Hindu community in Melaka as it links all the other Hindu temples in Melaka. Most of the Hindu religious activities and festivals in Melaka will be directly or indirectly linked to this temple.
It is interesting to note the Dutch influence in the architecture of the temple. This can be seen in the details and finishing of the entrance, walls, columns, vaulted domes and roofs of the temple. Some of the notable festivals of the Hindus are Datuk Chachar Festival and Feast for Lord Muruga.
