Yes Soundararajan Sir. Only in India the Govt. is sluggish in doing good things. But to help Billionaires they run like Usain Bolt.

Early Warnings

In 2010, a study by Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) found that most purifiers in the country don't completely remove waterborne viruses such as those that cause Hepatitis E. NIV, a government-funded body that conducts research on communicable diseases and viruses, evaluated eight domestic water purifier brands, and found that only two could completely remove the viruses.

Subsequently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which takes care of standardisation, certification and quality of products, appointed a committee headed by scientist Pawan Labhasetwar to look into the NIV report. It also set up sub-committees to look into the bacteriological and microbiological aspects of water purifiers. It has been more than three years since the committee was set up, but still there are no standards for water purification devices in India. Attempts to contact NIV and BIS were unsuccessful. A mail sent to both the organisations over a week ago remained unanswered.

ET Magazine did succeed in tracking down Labhasetwar, who now works with Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri). "The committee had formulated standards for RO [reverse osmosis]-based point-of-use water treatment systems," informs Labhasetwar, adding "standards for microbiological water treatment systems are at a draft stage."

Performance of water purifiers, explains Labhasetwar, largely depends on factors such as processes adopted, claims of microbial reduction and periodic maintenance. "Spreading awareness among masses is a crucial weapon in the fight against waterborne disease.".......
